Slow down/motion/man Topic

I am looking for a veteran Coach preferably in Phelan that is proficent in all three:

Slow Down temp

Motion Offense

Man Defense

Looking to follow his/her team and hopefully glean some info from watching their play by play, boxscore and roster. If you know of any, pass them on to me. Thank you!

I don't think slowdown is a profiency, persay, it's a situational adjustment. People don't recruit to play slowdown, for instance.

I am new but I don't consider slowdown as just a situational adjustment. Patience, value the basketball, good shot distro & limiting possesions are all part of slowdown.

It comes down to control the number of possesions. If you have a significantly better team than the other then you are more likely to win any given possession. In that case you want to maximize number of possessions to maximize your chances of winning. The opposite of this is also true which is why when your team is out matched you want to minimize possessions.

There are other mitigating circumstances that will influence the pace you want to play such as bench quality, stamina, etc.

You don't want to pigeonhole yourself though and just never even consider changing your tempo. If nothing else it makes your team more predictable and therefore easier to game plan for.

I did find Colorado in Phelan coached by brianbread. It seems he plays slowdown, motion and man.

The vast majority of coaches shy away from slowdown due to the belief that by slowing the game down you decrease the # of possesions thus increasing the chance a lesser team can beat you. For example in a 1 possesion game a high school team has a chance to beat any NBA team, however in a 100 possesion game the NBA team will win close to 100% of the time.

I played slow down motion last season in the last 8 games. Mainly because of iqs still were low. You need good rebounding and have to be able to defend perimeter fairly well to play slowdown motion in my opinion.

I have a pretty good idea what needs to be done to be successful playing slowdown. I am just looking for someone else with more experience to emulate.

I hate saying anything would happen 100% of the time.

kspoorman, what we are trying to tell you is that slowdown is a tactic, and a sometimes successful one, situationally. I wouldn't build my team around it, though, because, as the others have said, you minimize possessions and unless you plan on building very poor teams, you are going to be in situations where your team is superior and running slowdown will only increase your chances of being upset.

Find out all you can about the offenses and defenses you are running, but I wouldn't waste more time on tempo. You got essentially most of the information there is to know just now. The higher the tempo, the more possessions and opportunities your team gets (and the other team). If the odds are in your favor, you can run uptempo to maximize on that. You can slow it down to normal or slowdown when the odds decrease, but remember that going slowdown means that when you get down, you'll have fewer possessions to get back into the game... Those are the pros and cons.
