+/- Good Range Plays Topic

I have just recently started really watching for + and - plays in the box scores, and the +- play seems to be pretty rare. When a player is credited with one, I have figured out that he does not get a minus in the fielding stats on his player card, but I am not sure if he gets a plus play, or if the + and - just sort of cancel out. Can anyone help me out with this one?

he should get a + play and an error.

Thanks schedule1. That looks about right. The only one I had seen was on a player on an opposing team and I didn't know how many plus plays he had prior to this one, but I see he did get charged for the error.

FYI...you can see + and - plays for an individual player in a particular game in the box score of a game...click the Fielding tab for your team

Are we talking about this:

Boxscore Glossary

Fielding

- : Poor Play

+ : Good Play

++ : Great Play

+- : Good Range

Why would you get an error for a good range play?

you don't get an error for a good range play, you get an error for dropping the ball at the end of the good range play.

....or making a wild throw after getting to a ball most wouldn't.

Right. The thing that prompted me to ask, was that I had put together a really good fielding team (except for 1B; curse the sudden emphasis on fielding there) and for the first time was really watching the +/- plays in the boxes. So I wait all season for a +-, and when I finally see one it is on an opposing player. I did not know how many + plays he already had made, so I was not sure if the play in question added to his total. Hope that is more clear.

What determines a positive play and a negative play? Is like a game winning homer considered a positive?

They are strictly fielding plays. If your 93 range CF gets to a ball that the league average CF would never get, then he gets a "+" play. If he gets to a ball that even a 90 range CF fails to field then he gets a "++" play.

And why does this statistic matter other than to see who the above average fielders are? Aren't we supposed to be able to know that by ratings?

you could say that about any statistic...BA, SLG, Errors, anything...it matters because that is what actually happened the ratings are more or less a projection of what should happen over time

Also, what is really critical is that a plus play equals a hit that your pitcher didn't give up, while a minus is an extra hit given up that would have been prevented with better fielding. So if my CF has 22-0 on +/- plays and yours is 3-12, mine saved 32 hits over the course of the season compard to yours.

Isn't that 31 hits?
