In Kentucky, middle schoolers are eligible to play high school basketball. Anderson County's girls team has advanced to the Sweet 16. Among their first 8 players are three 8th-graders and two 7th graders. The team has one senior and no juniors.

We should have women's hoops dynasty. I'm tired of seeing the same ugly mugs over and over.

Kentucky also has a 7th grader wrestling for the Ryle Varsity Team, placed 2nd at state and has beat some top notch talent in Ohio

Yes, Mark Hall. I'd forgotten about him.

A competing coach said, ""Everybody talks about (Hall's) wrestling. And they should, because he's smooth," said Campbell County coach Mike Bankemper. "But what really sticks out to me is what he's able to do mentally. He's a 12-year-old and he's able to step on the mat with a senior who's won a state championship and he's able to wrestle his match. That's really tough mentally for a kid his age."

Another one is O. J. Mayo. He averaged 23.1 ppg during his 7th grade season at Rose Hill.

LOL! I was, indeed, referring to a women's dynasty team. We would have twelve 6'1 125 pound girls.....straight smokin hot. And their jerseys would be low cut shirts with mini skirts! I guarantee sold out gyms

Not sure how I feel about the OP. Seems we push children far too much these days.

Just wondering, but what class schools are we talking here? Anderson County is what, 5A? Not surprising at all that they'd have to go to middle schoolers. Good for them that they are doing so well.

EDIT: Ok that is just wierd. The web says they have an enrollment of over 1000 kids. What is up when they only have 5 high school girls on their roster. You have any history on that team, al? They have suspensions or something? It's just too strange to have that many.

Of course I think it's wierd to have a school that big at 5A anyway. But I still say those girls must be doing well regardless.

In Kentucky, there's only one class in basketball. In football, there are six classes according to enrollment with the largest schools in 6A. Anderson County is 5A.

No suspensions as far as I can tell. Their middle-schoolers are just very talented.

While Kentucky has only one class in basketball, there is a seperate Class 'A' tournament in January for the schools with the lowest 1/3 in enrollment. But, in March, all schools compete for spots in the 16-team state tournament. Whenever a small school has a good run, they capture the imagination of the entire state. Last season, tiny Elliott County made the Final Four. 'USA Today' did 3 articles about that team leading up to the finals. Google it for a good read. This season, Shelby Valley won the 'A' tournament and is a strong contender for state honors.

My high school (enrollment 280) never qualified for the state tournament but our district always scheduled Spring Break during tournament week "just in case."

Incidently, Kentucky holds the copyright for 'Sweet 16' but allows the NCAA to use the term.

The Newport Wildcats defeated Covington Holmes yesterday to advance to the Sweet 16. So another small school gets to live the dream. Newport is very talented this year and could make some noise.
