League #33771. 42 mil. No Moses, Rodman, Nash, Peja, Ray Allen, Rice, Barros, or clones please...

I'm in. How about nobody with over fifty made 3's or something otherwise we will see pierce and billups, alston etc.
3/23/2010 11:23 PM
I don't want to be overly restrictive on possible line-ups, and I don't mind those other guys because they are not as wildly overused as the SUPER SEVEN that I prohibited.

I agree that there will be teams with two rebounders and 3 (3 Shooters) what is going to be different? I can just take mookie pierce billups with Hakeem and another rebounder or Bird or Jordan or Dirk. I thought the idea was to see who could win when they had to imploy a completely different startergy.

No doubt there will still be some rebounder/3pt shooter influence. What I have done is remove players that are WILDLY overused in the majority of open leagues. These SUPER SEVEN players have proven to be remarkably successful in the current SIM, and also relatively low-cost and extra efficient. I don't particularly know that players with similar profiles will execute as cleanly as these seven. If this league fills, that may be an interesting question that gets answered...

Yeah, there is flat out nobody that gives you the advanced stats along with the minutes for near the same salary as those 7. The only one that you can come close to is Ray Allen.

For example:

Who else can give you 44% rebounding (18 oreb, 26 dreb), 70% paint scoring, 23% usg at almost 55% efg% while playing a shade under 3400 minutes for 9-million bucks?

Nobody.

For 5.5 million (cost of 05-06 Allen) you can get any number of great shooting guards who'll fill it up from 3, have a good tov%, decent ast% and will get to the free throw line more. The 00-01 version costs a little more, but only has a higher efg%. The 02-03 (i think that's the right year... 2525 minute version) is another extremely popular one. Reggie Miller gives you remarkably similar stuff for around the same price, though you do lose some minutes and defensive boards (but get more ftas). Many, many other guys fill that position. But I don't know anybody you can get 3360 minutes for 4.6 million bucks who has an efg% of almost 55% - especially with 200+ 3PM and 500+ FTA. Oh, and he has a low tov% (talking about Rice, obviously).

Nash is retardedly awesome. What other PG can you get 58% efg%, 30%+ ast%, 23%+ usg for under 6 million bucks? There are a couple that come close. Don't need the usage? Oh, there's a really good version of him that has less than 23% usage. And then there's Barros. Ridiculous. 57% efg%, 3300 minutes, 200ish 3pm, under 23% usg%, 25% ast% - for roughly six and a half million bucks. I've never used either of these guys, but I really want to use Barros at least once. Trouble is, to beat these type teams consistently, I like point guards who are more aggressive (higher usage, more ftas) like Billups, KJ and Magic.

I definitely see halls point and agree with him, but I see gerry's point, too. Threes and boards are what drive the current version of the sim. I don't care if people build teams with 1250 3PM... I just get tired of seeing nash and peja in every one of them with moses/rodman in the frontcourt, forcing me to draft a retarded amount of rebounds over 3 positions just to compete (without using those same guys).

Halls, I suggest you check out longtallbrad's post in the sim forum...

I'm also thinking about putting together another no 3pt bomber challenge. I got a lot going right now, though, so it'll probably be late April before I get around to making any theme leagues.

you also might look at joining a progressive league. Bomber teams don't dominate the UPL, and I know there's a team available there. I love progressive leagues and wish I was in more.

Great explanation of very salient points ash, thank you for taking the time to share them. BTW, count me in if you decide to put together the "no 3pt bomber" challenge.
3/25/2010 5:32 PM
As an aside, one way to virtually rule out the 3-pointer as a difference-making weapon could be to form a league that allows only player-seasons before the three became commonly used - maybe pre-1980?
3/26/2010 10:50 AM
You can also do something like less than 1 3pa per 48min
