Player Thoughts message Topic

Just received the Player Thoughts message. A couple of questions:

1. When it says "limited upside", does that mean that the player still has a fair amount of increase ? Is that somewhere in the 5-10 point range?

2. When a category is not mentioned, does that mean that there is very little to zero chance of an increase?

Thanks!

Here is a basic guideline to use. There is nothing officially published but these are the numbers most coaches go by. The spreads are for the entire 4 years. The High could cap at 21 or go up as much as 40-50-60-XX. You can get clues from the Scouting Trip feedback.

Low 0-6
Avg 7-20
High 21+

When a category is not mentioned that means it is Average.

Thanks Weena. I understand the recruiting breakdown, but the message you get after the 1st exhibition game is what I am talking about. Are you saying that those numbers are the same? Example: I have a junior SF and the only category that is mentioned is low post: limited upside. What does that mean for all of the other categories? Does that mean that they all are in the 7-20 range?

they are supposed to be the same. there might be a difference though, maybe a rounding error, that sometimes causes freshman to show up with more potential than they had during recruiting, despite having 10 minutes in the relevant practice area for the exhibition games. i would guess the difference was at most 1 point, so the numbers weena gave are accurate for the player thoughts message (although i would bump down every number one myself).

Giesen5, if you have a Junior that only has one category listed in the Asst. Coach email, then yes that means that all of his other categories are Average. However, remember that he is now a Junior so he may have already gained 2, 3, 4 points in those categories already. As I said earlier, the chart covers a 4 year period so he won't still have the full range of possible points available.

He will have at least seven points to gain this season. He may not get all seven this season but he has at least seven to get in order to be average in those categories. If he does get most of his points that are in each category he should show up with a limited next to most of them next season.

Not a big deal but low is more like 0-5, I had a guy who was average in a category that started out at 77 and he maxed at 83.

In the player thoughts message low could mean 0 or up to 5 or 6. Your sf will get improvement in that range for lp, and somewhere in the 7-19 or 20 range in all other cats if you give him the minutes.

BillyG touched on this, but something I've often wondered about is how can a player come up as average in FSS, and then high in the player thoughts message? I had a player get scouted as average in bh, I immediately gave him minutes and he was listed as high in the player thoughts message. I get the feeling that the fss and player thoughts are slightly different in what they list as low, avg and high. Honestly, I think it should be, since one is your asst coach who sees them play consistantly, the other is a national player scouting service.

It happens a lot with players being average in FSS and high in the player thoughts, or low in FSS and average in player thoughts. Some think what it comes from is FSS has different improvement rate for the potential areas then the player thoughts email, I tend to agree with this.

For example your recruits potential is to improve 19 or 20 in a category but in FSS high potential is 21, while in player thoughts it's 19 or 20, and low in FSS is 0-5 while in player thoughts average is 5-18 or 19. This differnece is much smaller because you may get 1 or 2 extra points of improvement then you expected but a guy coming in at high rather than average is great news because now instead of thinking your recruit will only improve 10 points he will 19 or 20 point improvment.

i sometimes wonder if FSS is based on the amount a guy will improve before the "player capped" email, and if the assistant is the difference in maximum and current ratings (which is usually about a point more than the capped email).

i assume the following scouting coment would be that the player only has average potential (possibly low?):

"- Excellent outside shooter - I think he does have some upside if I fine-tune a couple of things on his release."
3/31/2010 3:05 PM
Yes that is an average potential recruit.
