Thoughts on a 96 team field? Topic

This seems more and more like its actually going to happen, and we may have to deal with it as soon as next year. So what do people think?

I assume I will be in the majority that hate this idea. It seems everyone except the NCAA does right now. I don't see why the NCAA thinks people will travel to watch the 9 seed play the 24 seed in a bracket. Or even what should be the most equal game a 16 seed playing the 17 seed.

I read about the plan and it is so stupid. The NCAA can say whatever they want it is all about the cash.

Apparently it is going to be now

1st Round (To Cut to 64): Thursday Friday
2nd Round (64): Saturday Sunday
3rd Round (32): Tuesday Wednesday
Sweet 16: Thursday Friday
Elite 8: Saturday Sunday
Final Four: Saturday Monday

Stupid.

BTW Here is an ESPN Article on it: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/tournament/2010/columns/story?columnist=oneil_dana&id=5048513

It sucks...Why not just make it a 320 team field? More cash right?
4/2/2010 1:05 AM
You know what this does. . . i'm sure its been said before, but it just absolutely ruins the final two weeks of the season...

as it currently stands, there are always a few very worthy teams that are on the bubble come late february. Some make it some dont. It makes for interesting basketball. . . to watch, talk about, follow on espn....

can you imagine ESPN's bracketology experts debating( for an entire week) if its going to be Stoney Brook or Coastal Carolina getting their bubble burst. thats some must see TV

64 teams is the PERFECT amount. going to 96 also renders the NIT completely useless.

Going to 96 teams is a horrible idea.

the NIT currently has value?
4/2/2010 3:15 AM
The NIT really isn't horrible, if anyone watched UNC vs Dayton last night it was actually a good game. Normally the later rounds of the NIT are solid games between two good teams. A lot of times its teams that are good (relative term), but may have had injuries, or a team that has improved quite a bit late in the season.

I suspect the NIT, which is now owned by the NCAA, will die a slow death.

To find 32 teams with winning records, I had to dip down to Hofstra, RP1 #151.

I hate the fact that the proposed schedule is so compressed. This year, when Northern Iowa played Kansas, it'd be their 3rd game in 6 days. Due to fatigue, I think we'll find that fewer double-digit seeds make it to the Sweet 16. The BCS schools, who'd probably like to get rid of the mid-majors completely, are chuckling.
4/2/2010 4:22 AM
The compressed schedule is my only real complaint about this...they should play the 1st round on play in Tuesday and carry on the normal schedule after that...

ETA: seeding becomes a lot more important in the 8-9 matchup though doesn't it...
4/2/2010 4:44 AM
There is really not much to complain about herer...They could have let coaches journalist, and computers determine the top 2 for a championship game.

When I see ideas like this (such as reseeding at the final four) I think the NCAA doesn't realize how much of the popularity of the tournament comes from the filling out of the brackets/gambling. With the 64/65 team fields, you need to pick upsets to win your pool and people typically pick a bunch of 10/11/12 seeds to win in the first round. If those seeds need to go thru a play-in game it's going to make a lot less sense to pick them to advance. So if everybody is picking the 1-8 seeds to advance, the brackets will be less fun.
4/2/2010 8:16 AM
dumbest idea ever
4/2/2010 8:42 AM
Who votes for/against the expansion? And what percentage of the deciders are aligned with the BCS?
