Are there any theories or data supporting players developing better on defenses playing one position instead of another?

Does it matter if I play, in the MinL, a player at SS, 2B, CF, LF, etc.? Or does it just matter that they play?

Thanks.

WifS says it matters. I've seen nothing that would convince me that it does.
4/20/2010 1:25 PM
What do they say? Is there something in a Dev Chat?
4/20/2010 1:30 PM
They say you should play a guy where you're going to play him in the bigs to fully develop him. That he needs to be defensively challenged.

I say "If playing at the toughest defensive position accelerates development, why shouldn't I play my 1B at SS in LoA if I don't have a legit SS prospect in LoA?" That would challenge him the most.

Developing a game in that manner seems insane to me.

Has anybody tested playing a 1B prospect at SS in the MinL to see if it improves their defensive development more than if they played at 1B or LF?

I've played SS all over and haven't noticed the SS playing at 2B, 3B or RF have suffered.

Thanks.

A devo chat said that players played at tougher positions develop better, as long as they are not overmatched

I have seen no hard data that leads me to think this isn't true, despite mike's rather unconvincing anecdote.

Since I have no real data on this i'm going to cautiously assume that what admin has said is true until i see evidence to the contrary.

For now I assume my CF prospect develops better while in center rather than right or field

Aren't all minor league SS overmatched?

As you move up the ladder, it gets better(as it should) but, even in AAA, you've still got top 20 SS making 35 errors.
4/21/2010 10:08 AM
Playing a 1B at SS would be an example of "overmatched".

Projected 75+, as compared to projected 40-something across the board.
4/21/2010 10:48 AM
You're pretending that we all see the same projections. We don't. Is WifS using some hidden rating to determine "overmatched"? And basing development/lack of development on it. That's silly.

I think most of us agree that minor league results mean nothing in terms of development. Am I right about that?
