Great Stuff - Really Low Stamina Topic

I've searched the forums and haven't found it, so forgive me if I'm asking a tired question...

I've never drafted or acquired a player like this because I don't know how valuable they can be, but I've seen a few pitchers like this in drafts:

DUR/ST/CTL/VL/VR/P1/P2

80/10/88/90/90/96/92

Obviously the guy has tremendous stuff. I know there are DUR/ST formulas for determining IP, but how many pitches per appearance can you expect from a guy like this? Most of the setup and closer aces I've seen are at least 20, and my own preference is to use multiple-inning setup guys.

Once again, if this has been addressed, I haven't seen it. I have a pretty good feel for the medium and high stamina guys in combination with their durabilities, but with stamina that low I haven't seen it. Thoughts?

Closer. Maybe get 40-50 innings. More if he pitches as dynamite as those ratings Indicate.

I've given up on both the really low stamina guys (under 15) and the RPs with no DUR (like 20/50 STA/DUR) guys ... I just can't get enough IP out of them to justify a roster spot

I do tend to run my pitching staffs in a non-traditional way that often gets me into fatigue binds, so YMMV ... but I can't afford to use a roster space on a guy who can only pitch every 3rd day or if he pitches back-to-back, he ends up out for 6 games

If a guy goes 40 for 40 in save opportunities, thAts not worth a spot?

I once had a closer 31 for 31 but he even had a lower stamina. Maybe not as a setup guy but closers like that can be valuable. Especially with those ratings.

If he reaches 10 stamina then he'll be worth a roster spot. Harry James is fairly close to your guy and he's been useful. Especially in the playoffs.

Sounds like this Nefi_Ortiz is a pretty good comp for what that guy could become.

I was able to get roughly 50 innings each of the last 3 seasons out of him. I think I set his pitch count to 15/20. Sure there are some days that he's not available, but he's available most, previously as a set up man, now as a closer. Kind of sucking to start the year out this year, but won the fireman award last year, career whip around 1.25. About 8k/9 & a little under 3bbs/9.

i don't like pitchers with stamina below 15. if you're looking at a rule IV draft prospect, he'd have some value if he hits the 10... but if he doesn't, he really can't throw that much at all.

Morgan Carpenter was really good for me a few seasons in MG with like ratings and Durability/Stamina.

Not as good but the closest I have. As you can see, 72/15 can get you 60. 80/10, with those ratings, should get the same.

And pitch well.

1) The phrase "rule IV draft" is the height of baseball nerdiness. Do you work for Baseball America?

2) In-game fatigue will make his performance less than you might expect from those ratings, unless you set his pitch count at 5/10 and have him pitch to 2-3 batters every other day (which will mean a lot of not-quite saves where someone else has to get the last out). So discount his projections some.

3) Inability to pitch more than 50-60 innings a year will make it less likely that he hits his projections. So discount his projections some more.

All told, guys like this are probably not going to be the stud you think. Those particular numbers are so good that even at a 7-10 point per category discount he can still warrant a slot in the bullpen for 50 IP a season. But if he doesn't project to at least mid-80s across the board he will probably end up worthless.

I'd make him a closer, but have at least one other guy who can step in for him.

As you probably need to give him at least a 15 PC to be useful, figure he'll only be able to pitch two or three times every seven games.

I have a guy with 85 durability and only 4 stamina but herculean ratings

92 Control 90+ splits 90 velocity 97 GB/FB 95 83 pitches

With 4 stamina I set his pitch count to 5/5 and made him Set A. For two yeras he has averaged 83 appearances and 37IP with a K rate just over 1 per inning and an ERA of 3.05.

I have alot of high stamina relievers so I can justify a roster spot for him to come in and work either 1/3 or 2/3 of an inning almost every 2nd day.

+1

But the rest of your bullpen should be stout. If you can get him late in draft, or cheap on IFA, he might be best as in AAA for 3 years as an injury fill and a playoff roster arm.

I just picked up a pitcher in the draft whose projections are

ST Dur Con LH RH V FB 1 2 3 4 5
16 69 88 90 96 93 72 100 89 0 0 0

Is his stamina enough for him to be a 9th inning, save situation only, closer?
Can i expect to get 60 innings a year? How can I maximze the use I get out of him?
