Recruiting on the super-cheap: doable? Topic

After signings start, is it ever possible to sign a recruit without doing EV, HV, or CV's? I'm talking a couple of phone calls, a schollie, and promises for mins / starts. I'm assuming the answer is no, but I wondered if recruits would ever start getting desperate enough to go for that.

I just signed this guy in DIII for $275 total. Of course, that includes a promised starting spot...which I probably won't fulfill. Not a particularly good player, but I've seen worse.

Yep, very possible.

I wish it was possible in GD, but cheap recruits can come true in HD. New engine my eliminate that, but signed a so/so player for $125 (phone call, letter, and ship). He was better than SIM recruit, but just barely.

Thanks guys. So does it only work with lesser recruits, or can you go after the same caliber of player you'd normally recruit?

Especially if you are careful to look at potential and not just total rating or stars, you can get an okay but not great player for minimal amounts. Have to be lucky too - happen to identify someone and not get beat out by higher prestige or more $$

Possible, but it mostly takes luck. I signed the player below for a phone call and scholly ($110) if I recall correctly. Ended up being conference player of the year and defensive player of the year his senior year.

It was my first team even in HD, and, IIRC, I screwed up early recruiting then, with only a little money , got called by 2 players I hadn't even looked at. One was Wirtzy below, the other was a guy who ended up being mopup all 4 years. I keep hoping I'll catch a break like that again, but it hasn't happened and doubt it will. Don't know if the engine threw me a bone knowing it was my first team or what.

Whaddya know, I just snagged a decent recruit for $130 - one call, promises, and a schollie. Thanks for the advice all!

Hey, bhansalid00 -- may I ask: when you did this, did you make the call/promise/schollie offer at the same time? And did the recruit say yes right away, or did he string you along until the end of the signing period?

I did it often at DIII, but not at DII.

you can almost always get a guy to consider you for $110. i find this works on pretty much any recruit, not just "inferior" guys

gill - is that with a schollie and a start?
