Which Div I Head Coach Are You? Topic

I am bringing back a topic that we seemed to have a lot of fun with quite a ways back. With so many new coaches since then, thought it might be a good time to bring it back as a diversion from the complaining.

I originally posted this subject 2-3 years ago. The idea is not to imagine which coach that you pretend to be, or which coach is your favorite or which coach runs the same offense or defense as your current team. The idea is to look at your HD career and find a coach in real life who comes close to mirroring your record.

When I originally asked the question, I was Rick Pitino. (No I did not hook up in a restaurant after hours with a blond gold digger.)

Like Rick Pitino, I was coaching my 4th DI school.
He started at a small school in Boston University while I started at a small school in Tennessee State.
Next he surprised many by taking an upstart Providence to a deep NT run while I did the same with my Loyola Marymout squad.
A National Championship was next with Pitino getting his at Kentucky while pull off the feat at Penn State.
Lastly,  while Pitino has brought Louisville into an annual contender, I did the same while at Syracuse, we both failed to break though at the time.

Since then, I have played around 20 more seasons and added 2 more NT titles, this time from Syracuse. The HD me now scoffs at Pitino.

Who am I now?

Comparing just my HD record from Syracuse to his at UConn, I am now Jim Calhoun.

Calhoun has been at UConn for 24 seasons, I have completed 26 with the Cuse
He has been to 3 Final 4's, I have been to 4 Final 4's.
We both have won 2 National Titles while at our schools
Calhoun has won the NIT and I have won the PT (twice)
Calhoun has won the Big East CT 6 times, so have I
Calhoun has recently won his 800th game, as have I.
25 players under Calhoun have gone on to play professional ball, 31 of my players have.

Lastly, Calhoun acted like a grumpy old man when asked if he was getting too much money from the state due to the budget cuts and I act like a grumpy old man when others try to take away any of the built in prestige or money that we get from being in a BCS conference while with the Cuse.

I'm more of a Lenny Wilkens (NBA). I know, he's not college but he coached forever and had good teams and bad teams. But mainly he just coached. Year after year after year after year...

Scott Drew, when he was at Valpo working for his dad Homer, was a master of recruiting internationals.

i would compare myself to coach billy gillispie. going out and getting wasted, coming in and screaming at the players while struggling to remain standing, that is my kind of ball game :) im being totally serious... surprisingly, it makes them play better. also, going from tamu to uk like he did was cool. but it was a lot cooler before he screwed the pooch :(

wait, so you coach SU and you compare yourself to Calhoun? You do realize that's gonna be an issue with the boosters right?

Sadly, I'm Herb Sendek. (and while i coach NCSU here, I'm a UNC fan in RL, so it's pretty funny to me).

I'm  Clarence 'Big House' Gaines from Winston-Salem.  During his 47 year career, he won 828 games and one NT, led by his star Earl Monroe. Winston-Salem just moved up to DI this season.

Our similarities:

1) We're both Kentucky natives...Gaines is from Paducah; I'm from Greenville

2) He spent his entire career at a small school, never moving to D1.  I've been coaching some of my teams for over 40 seasons, all at DII and DIII.

3) We're both Kentucky Colonels. In January 2005, Gaines was honored during a half-time ceremony at Rupp Arena during a game between  Kentucky  and Kansas.. Before a capacity growd of 24,000, he received the designation of "Kentucky Colonel" from Governor Ernie Fletcher, the highest honor a native son of the State of Kentucky can receive.  (I received mine by mail after being nominated by my mother.)

As a Syracuse native, I like the Denny Crum comparison better. F Calhoun and his thugs...

This post has a rating of , which is below the default threshold.
It appears I am a slightly less accomplished Jim Phelan - similar in wins, games, seasons and %, I only have a D III PIT title, he's got a D II title - but hey, I got a world named after me...
