Guards do now use LP.  THe guides are out of date.

Yes, the LP rating does matter now for guards.

I had a D3 guard with an LP in the upper 30s that transformed from a spot backup his junior year into a 10-11 ppg threat after the engine rolled over. Maybe some of that was ratings changes from Jr. to Sr. year or personnel changes on the team around him, but I strongly believe the primary difference was the engine change now taking the LP rating into consideration.

when they changed the recruits they said that low post would matter for guards and I think it does

GOOD THING THIS TOPIC WAS IN CAPS.

It definitely matters plus, the guard will take 3 pt shots in a ratio approximately related to his LP/Per numbers, if you set him to 0 for 3 pt shooting.

Er, not sure this is true.  Otherwise, my 88 PER/2 LP PG would be taking 44 of every 45 from 3...

As I understand it, the Low Post rating influences every close shot, regardless if it is a post up, lay up, or floater in the lane.  The name "Low Post" is misleading because it make it sound like it only applies to post up situations.  In reality, it will affect every shot that is taken near the basket.

Better name, perhaps, would be "Paint"

Correct, seble answered this question pretty clearly.  LP affects shots in the paint, PE affects shots outside the paint.  It's as simple as that.

so a player with 90 per and 0 LP can hit a ton of 3's but can't make a layup?

Sure he can - other ratings come into play. I have a D3 pg that shot 58% from two despite his 8 LP rating (up from 4 pre-season!).  Depending on the offense/defense I'm running, sometimes the LP/PER ratings have among the least correlation to my best scorers.

ok - so follow up question...

would you rather have a SG with 40 LP and 40 per or 0 LP and 70 per assuming everything else is equal?

That's a great question.  I am not an authority on this, but FWIW, I think it depends on a lot of different factors.  Maybe the most important consideration is how badly does your team need outside shooting?  You generally get outside shooting from your guards, especially your SGs. If you don't have other players than can shoot 3s, you will probably have to take the 70 PER player simply because without enough deep threats, (human) opponents will pack the defense and then you will have a hard time scoring.  On the other hand if you have a balanced offense, with the ability to get outside shooting from other players and other positions, then the 40/40 player could be the better choice.  The nice thing about an inside-outside scorer is that regardless of what defense you face or what halftime adjustment the defense makes, your player will have a good chance of scoring.  The other consideration depends on the player's athleticism and speed.  Guards tend to have more speed and less athleticism, but there are some that are very athletic and equally, if not more, athletic than they are fast.  A very athletic guard with a good LP rating can be very effective by shooting a high % and getting to the free throw line.

If this affects shot mixture, it's another reason player generation is screwed up.  Way too many guards with 1 LP.  It certainly seems to me that these guards shoot way more 3s than 2s, which does not seem to approximate real life.
