I've never made the jump to D1, but it seems to me that it shouldn't be all that easy to move directly to a mid-major from a D-II school.  I'd prefer to give lower-tier D1 coaches that opportunity first.  If all that really matters is your last 4 seasons then you probably would have been better off a season or 2 ago...

I have to agree with dahsdebater here. The game is designed to make you pay your dues in low D-1 then mid major before Big 6..Nothing wrong with that, If you want to be a d2 superstar.. great, but dont expect an ACC job when you are ready to move

I agree that a lower-tier D1 coach should probably have an advantage over a D2 coach, but not if the D2 coach has a significantly better resume.  Not that much difference prestige-wise between the top level D2 schools and the bottom feeder D1 schools.  That much is obvious during recruiting.........

And I would also say that if you're actually having to take this route to end up at a BCS school, you're probably just not having enough success at the previous school.  It's fairly easy to get to a BCS school as long as the conference has openings, and to suggest that you HAVE to go low D-1, then mid-major, before landing a BCS school is just not correct.

I can't count on one hand, literally, the number of times I've jumped straight from D2 to a BCS conference.  Granted, I was at those D2 schools for an extremely long time and was very, very successful with those teams, so I know how long it takes to qualify for those jobs.  I'm here to tell you though, it's not as long as you may seem to think.  It's all about success and timing.

To those new coaches who happen to be reading this thread, yes I guess the "traditional" route is D3, D2, low D-1, mid-major D1, then BCS school, but it CERTAINLY doesn't have to be that way.  At all.

I plan on moving up next year in Knight after my sensational seniors have their good year next year, but I also looked at jobs and i am generally qualified for most jobs in small conferences up to C-, long shot for three C schools, but not qualified for some D schools that were in mid-major conferences.  I think, given my resume, that is right where I should be.  Now after next year when I'm looking to move up, I sure hope I'll qualify for some of those lowly-mid major schools, but for now I think it's good.

Interesting Furry.  Maybe the promotion process HAS changed since the last time I've tried to promote.

I went to Texas (albeit a C- Texas) directly from USC, Aiken in Smith after seaon 34.  We are now at season 47.  It could be that I had 2 seasons at D1 prior and then took 13 season off before going back to USCA....not sure.

They must have changed the logic.  There was a time when I could have jumped straight from D3 to low D-1 (On my udm_mike alias, before I started to suck as a coach).  I'd think your resume would be plenty good enough for a C- prestige.  What does it matter what conference it is?  The conference prestige is built into the school prestige already, isn't it?  So a C- ACC school should theoretically be as prestigious as a C- Horizon school.  Or am I mistaken there?

in the early days of Phelan or Knight, many folks were very unhappy when a couple folks coming off great seasons jumped ahead of the "standard" track.....there was then some tinkering.....hard to please all with what I'll call the promotion sequence

Yeah, actually you're mistaken. Definitely possible to have two schools with the same prestige and the BCS school is still tougher to qualify for.
