the 19.5 Million dollar mistake NEED ADVICE Topic

Ok so i took over a team with an old pitcher who is still rated 85 overall so not bad but the guy is killing my payroll.   For the next 3 years he will make over 60 million dollars.   I want to rid myself of this guy so i can free up payroll.    The guy has a NO TRADE CLAUSE and right now he rejects every offer I put together.    I do have 1 team interested in him but I cant package up a deal he will accept.

I will accept any advice:   What is my best option to rid myself of this guy and not get burned!!!   Anyway around the NO Trade Clause??  Will Waivers or releasing him do anything for me????    He's hitting next years payroll for 20 million and its preventing me from signing free agents right now because i'll be over payroll NEXT YEAR.

ANy advice??? My team is solid with the exception of this 1 bad mistake by the previous owner.

Thanks!

Depends on how desperate you are for the freed-up payroll...  You can always WAIVE him, and let someone else assume the burden of his contract.  If he clears waivers, you just keep him and no harm done.  If someone else claims him, you lose a good/great pitcher, but you free up payroll this year and for the next two years.

Is it worth it?  Only you know for sure.

i was under the impression that if I waive him i'd still be responsible for his salary?   That's not true?     I'll waive him immediately if I dont have to pay him.   LOL

If you waive him and someone CLAIMS him, you're off the hook for his salary.  If nobody claims him, he's still yours.

If you release him, someone can pick him up for the ML minimum and you pay the rest for the remainder of the contract.

Crap!!  I was excited but he can't be waived as he has 2 options left!     I'm stuck like chuck on this one huh?

With respect to the no trade clause, players will generally reject trades to teams with a worse record than the current team.  If it's early in the season (before 27 regular season games played, I believe), then it goes by the prior season's record.

i do appreciate the help guys!   This guy is gonna start every 2 games to earn his check!!!   LOL

Not sure why you're so eager to get rid of him? Yeah, he's probably being overpaid a bit, but that guy can give you 220 innings of mid-3 ERA. For a team that has made the playoffs the past two years, he's a real valuable piece.

If a contender straight up waived that guy in either of my leagues, it would definitely raise some eyebrows.

Sounds like it's a case of future season budget constraint.

If its still the offseason, I wouldn't hesitate to waive that player.

I'm not able to waive him and this is my first year owning this team and I'm stuck with a guy i cant trade or waive at this point.    My pitching staff is amazing without this guy and that 19 million can sure add 2-3 bats on a AL squad!    But like TECWRG mentioned its mainly because of the constraint of not being able to sign players for next season because i'll be over budget!     The eyebrows might be raised but i already advertised a FREE 5 MILLION if anyone would just TAKE this guy off my hands!!    Only 1 interested party thus far and this pitcher is REJECTING the trade!   LOL....................can't even give him away!!!!       I'll keep him and watch him be out for the season due to Tommy John Surgery!!!    LOL

Thanks guys!!   I do appreciate the help and i'm a bit rusty with the rules as i've been out of the game awhile!!!  Thanks again and Good luck to you all in your leagues.

I'm not sure why you're in such a hurry to get ride of him.  The guy is still very solid, and only 33, so its not like he's going to start sucking any time soon.  I definently wouldn't waive him for nothing.

Designate him with waivers.

Except....there's a bug with that if there's options. Remember? They don't hit the WW when they should.
