Recruit showed up on D3 search, but I have no shot Topic

SEE UPDATE AT END OF THREAD (4/18)
I found a player on my D3 search (coaching D3 Rhode Island), but he rejected all my recruiting efforts except for evals, and told me I have no shot. Have others had this occur, and is it considered an error? FYI, I rechecked that the recruit appeared in my D3 search (instead of D2 search) several times. Thanks for your help.

Happens all the time at all levels. Some recruits just don't like your school. Once you get the "no shot" message forget him and move on.

i saw a thread about this a month or so ago, but imo, this is a bug.

I don't remember ever getting a "no shot" message from someone on my D3 search. That def sounds like a bug.

I don't recall ever coming across this

OP, i think your best bet is to send in a ticket. hopefully seeing this twice will alert CS to the presence of a bug.

I've had it happen.
Two different years.

I sent in a ticket. If NOT a bug, this would seem to make the initial call the only definitive way to determine if a recruit is reachable or not. Which if so, is quite odd.

I had it happen to me in the last recruiting season with Hope. Very disappointing to us because he was in Michigan too ... and ended up signing with another DIII school farther away, but same prestige. His preference was to stay local ..... must've been not wanting to become part of the Flying Dutchmen tradition.

I'm just happy he refused the 2-home visits and the campus visit I had thrown on him at the initial cycle, even if the 5 SV's were ultimately wasted.

This is not germaine to the conversation, but ixolabrat, that sounds like just an awful recruiting strategy.  A) There is no reason to put anywhere close to 2 HV + 1CV + 5 SVs into a D3 recruit in the first cycle; 1-2 HVs or 1 CV and a scholarship offer will be enough to get considered and then spend more if there's a battle.  B) If you're sure enough you want the guy to send HVs and CVs without looking at potentials, there is no reason to ever send SVs to a D3 recruit.  C)  Unless you're in a very narrow distance range where their values overlap, sending both HVs and CVs is cost-inneficient.  Figure out which one is more cost-effective at the distance you're recruiting from and use that one exclusively.

I know you weren't asking for help, but you just described a massive waste of recruiting cash and I felt like somebody should say something...

I think he sent the SVs before the HV and CV.

Before the first cycle?  "I'm just happy he refused the 2-home visits and the campus visit I had thrown on him at the initial cycle."  If anything the SVs came later...

I coach D3 Rhode Island in Wooden, and just did a search for D3 players and found Dave Alderman, SG from the state of Michigan in my D3 search. However, he rejected all sholarship offer, home visit, etc. as if he is out of my reach. I rechecked several times that he did indeed show up in my D3 search. Could this be an error? If possible, I would appreciate a quick response, as I'm in the middle of recruiting. Thanks so much for your help.

Hi John,

No, there's no error here. He's pretty far from your school, you're going to need to do more smaller recruiting actions to get him interested before doing visits and offering him a scholarship.

Thanks for the response, but I think I disagree. He rejected everything I did, AND he told me I have no shot, his coach told me I have no shot, my assistant told me I have no shot. In other words, not only was I currently not able to recruit him, I would NEVER be able to recruit him. Please look again. Several veterans on the forums have said they have NEVER seen anything like this. Thanks again.

He would not have appeared in your search at the start of recruiting, but would have later on after he lowered his expectations. We don't track exactly when we would have dropped.
4/17/2011 12:05 AM 10downing
I'm not concerned with when he dropped. The fact is that he was in my DIVISION THREE search (I checked it repeatedly to make sure), meaning he was AVAILABLE TO RECRUIT. Yet when I tried to recruit him, he told me I was OUT OF HIS LEAGUE. Do you see how this is a mistake???

It's important to know when he dropped into your range to cross-reference that with the times of your recruiting efforts. Without knowing that, it's impossible for us to determine what happened.

So you're saying that if/when it happens again, I should contact you immediately (which I did)? Is it possible for someone to look at the recruiting search/effort source code to find the bug? Because as it is, this is a mistake in search results vs recruit response. In other words, if a recruit appears in a search based on your division (in my case D3) and then responds to your efforts with "you have no shot," that is an error in the code. Please pass this along to someone who can investigate and correct. Thanks again for your help.
