Down side risk of an IFA ML contract. Topic

I should probably know this, but I don't. Other than increasing the hit to my payroll, what is the down side to offering an IFA a major league contract? Does it force him on my 40? Does it start his free agent clock the moment he signs? Will a r0b0t try and kill all humans? Anything?

It forces him to his 40, and by the time he is in the majors will probably be out of options. Arb clock is based on service time in the majors.

Not really.   Just designate him without waivers and you can remove him from your 40.   He'll have burnt 1 option but that's that.   The system is broken like that.

So as long as he is good enough it's not a huge down side then? The guy I am looking at projects to be a upper half starting SS, has a makeup of 92, and is 20. Based on what you are saying it seems like a good idea to offer him a ML contract.

pretty sure this is incorrect...designating without waivers means they don't go on waivers immediately (to give you time to trade them), but they will still eventually go on waivers, which i'm pretty sure you don't want with your stud prospect...definitely used to be a loophole where you could simply remove guys from the 40 without passing waivers as long as they had options left, but i'm pretty sure that's been fixed

Just did it once I read Mike's post a half hour ago; I am 100% certain he is correct.  Designate, assign, he is no longer on the 40 man.

i stand corrected, if the player has options this does work...way to go admin "fixing" that bug

I just tried this with a few guys.  Works just as Mike said.  The only problem is that a couple of the guys suffered a demotion penalty when I designated them.

Did you demote them?   I've never had that problem when just removing them from the 40 and sending them back to the same level.

That could have been because he was on the inactive list for 13 days.  Normal progression/regression.

I just used this trick and actually had a "Promotion" penalty for two of my guys.  First of all, they were assigned to the same level.  And second of all why would there ever be a "Promotion" penalty?

"promotion" is just a cosmetic word thats probably the wrong word. I get "promotion" penalties when I sign FAs after the reg season (or even ST I think) has started. The idea being they weren't signed early enough, or in your case you done somethin bad to him.

You can also get "demotion bonuses."

The "Promotion" and "Demotion" events on the player's profile are not necessarily bonus/penalty events so much as the triggers that often (but not always) cause an unscheduled development update. Because a promotion constitutes "good experience" the resulting development update is usually positive, but not necessarily; likewise a player usually suffers from demotion, but if he was otherwise doing well (for example, a successful cup of coffee while replacing an injured player - where there isn't supposed to be a penalty for returning him to the minors) he can actually improve on an update triggered by a demotion.

You should note, however, that if your player recently experienced a "regular" development update (i.e. "Spring training" or "regular season") the chances are much lower that a promotion/demotion triggered update. I cannot prove it, but it seems to me that if there is no such update then the promotion/demotion effect is lost forever and does not factor into the next update. So ... whenever possible, if I have to demote I try to do it immediately after a scheduled update.

Good thread! Any thoughts on when a 'scheduled update' will occur? My traditional burn-the-incense-and-wave-the-candle method won't work here.
