WTF is up with his defensive ratings? The greatest ever is a 70? Is this the Bill Russell that won all those championships for the Celtics?  Every other center should be a 60 or lower then! Well I guess we could give Dream a 70 also LMFAO what a JOKE!

The best part of that rating is the fact that since all-defensive teams didn't exist back then, he can't get the extra rating boost from making the team.
Sort of like saying cars went zero MPH before the radar gun was invented.
Seble won't show his face around these parts anymore.

I think we got your point when you posted this in the other forum where it belongs- when you were also talking about how great of a defensive player Laimbeer was.

also the 'won all those championships' bit is a tad overstated - you know what with the 7 or 8 other hall of famers he played with over the years, and arguably the greatest GM/Coach ever leading the way he was hardly a one man gang

I never said Laimbeer was a great defensive player but you obviously like to stretch the truth slym. Laimbeer was one of the better defensive centers during his career and that is a fact! He should be a 70 and Russell should be a 95+

So because he played with great players he shouldn't get his due for being the greatest defensive player ever? That makes alot of sense! I guess we should lower Shaq's defensive rating 20 or more points also since he played with Kobe. Did they lower Havlicek's defensive rating also since he played on such a great team or does he get a free pass? What is the logic behind this that's all I want answered not ignorant comments.

By the way, I am not a Celtics fan I just want to know who decides the #'s cuz some are way off along with positions of quite a few players. Johnny Morton was a PG/SG and is listed a SF. He was 6-3 at best and never played SF ever. Derrick Gervin was a SG but is listed at PF and he never played PF ever. These are just a few of many flaws that need to be fixed but instead the decision was to make changes that insult players like Russell with ignorant defensive rankings. That may not bother you but It does bother me!

I'm not just talkin about the championship's. Laimbeer was an excellent defender throughout his career so all you Laimbeer haters can continue to down talk him but you are uneducated fans who don't want to give an overachieving player who worked as hard as any player at his game and had a great career along with 2 championship's to prove it!

Should I bold the part where you say "Laimbeer was an excellent defender throughout his career..."?

You're about 5 years late to the party cowpie.

dont be dumb - no one said anything about not giving him his due as a defensive player

what grinds my gears is that so often he gets ALL the credit for those titles - oh what a great leader! (on a team with several future hall of fame coaches and Red Auerbach on it), oh what  a great player! (when he always had tons of help and as a matter of fact was essentially a one way player) etc

as for ignorant comments? you seem to be the one who doesnt get it - there are plenty of threads that explain how this travesty happened (and yes it is a travesty and I have been vocal about it in the past (the distant past as another points out this is ooold news)) - I suspect there's even boiler plate in the FAQ - what do you want to know?

they screwed him on blocks (by under guesstimating his totals which are fudged numbers btw) they then screwed him on his rating not in small part because it is based at least a little on those self same blocks (which they fudged) and then they effectively decided that no player pre 1968 can have a 90 rating simply because there were no all nba defense teams prior to that

they are idiots and they dont care - is that what you want to hear? ok

He was a great defensive player, rebounder, and could also pass very well along with being a solid scorer. That doesnt add up to a one way player! Wilt has 80+ ratings.

7/28/2011 4:46 PM
they gave Wilt more blocks is what it comes down to

and yes 'one way player' is a mite overstated - he was great at starting the break (possibly better than Unseld even) and the Cs were a fast break team so that was significant and he was a facilitator in the high post so he was helpful on offense but he was at best his team's 2nd option and more typically 3rd or 4th and his efficiency for a high rebounding pivot was pretty appalling

this should be a league where you build a team around russell with no hall of famers on it... except him, of course.
7/28/2011 7:58 PM
The statement was did he deserve the majority of the credit for those 13 rings.  If you ask most anyone of that era, they would likely say yes.

1. People want to play next to, and coach, guys that can win.  Russell was that guy.

2. If all these HOFer's didn't play aongside Russell, do they get rings?  Do they get to the Hall?  Maybe, maybe not.

I can only assume that felonius and ash agree that LBJ has had a better career than Kobe.  He has far better numbers than Kobe ever had and has had worse teammates, so ... end of discussion, right?
