The 2011 WIS Championship Round 2 themes will be posted here.

League Name: AVG & ERA Draft
Salary Cap: $60 Million

Description: There will be a 4-round serpentine draft (order determined randomly). Each person will draft two batting averages and two earned run averages. Once an AVG or ERA is drafted, it’s off the board and nobody else can use players with those stats. Every hitter (over 300K) on your roster must match one of the batting averages that you selected. Every pitcher (over 300K) on your roster must match one of the earned run averages that you selected. Stats for pitchers who hit and/or hitters who pitch are ignored for purposes of this theme.

Note that multiple versions of the same player (i.e., ‘94 & ’95 Maddux) can appear in the league, but not on the same team. Clones are not allowed.  (If you draft 3.04 ERA and 2,93 ERA, you can only use one Dave Stieb even though there are three eligible choices (two at 3.04 and one at 2.93).

When you do a search, you should list one extra decimal (i.e., to search for a 3.04 ERA, choose 3.035 to 3.045). Whatever number is displayed by WIS is the official number used for this theme.

League Name: 2011 Baker’s Dozen + Teammates
Salary Cap: $90 Million

Description:  Choose twelve players from the 2011 season. These players (2011 season) must appear on your roster. Choose these players wisely because each player must bring along exactly one teammate from the past (i.e., must have been a teammate prior to 2011). These teammates are not to be twisted... you must use the actual year in which he was a teammate. (For example, if I take 2011 Mariano Rivera, I can add 1999 Bernie Williams, since Bernie was a teammate of Mariano in 1999). The 25th player is a thirteenth player from 2011. This player may not bring along a teammate from the past. In addition, the ballpark you select must be the 2011 ballpark that this thirteenth player played in.

League Name: Re-Allocation Draft
Salary Cap: No Salary Cap (will play as 100M cap)

Description: This league will have a 20-round player draft. Only players from 1951-2011 will be eligibleThe player pool for this draft will consist of exactly 480 players. These 480 players will include exactly 240 hitters and 240 pitchers. The 240 hitters will include 192 players with 550+ PA/162 (24 each of C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, plus 72 OF). The other 48 hitters (any position) will be part-time players with a minimum salary of $1.0 million and a maximum PA/162 of 350. The 240 pitchers will consist of 120 SP (each with 150+ IP/162) and 120 RP (each with 40+ IP/162 and salary of $1.0+ million). All positions are based on the primary position listed by WIS.

Determination of Player Pool: How do we determine which players will be in the draft? Each owner will submit a unique 20-player roster. On this roster, you must have exactly 8 starting hitters (550+ PA/162), one each at C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS plus 3 OF. You must have 2 part-time hitters (each with salary of $1.0+ million and maximum of 350 PA/162). You must have 5 SP’s (each with 150+ IP/162) and 5 RP’s (each with 40+ IP). Your 5 SP’s must total at least 1000 IP/162. Your 5 RP’s must total at least 300 IP/162. Your total team salary must fall between 99 and 100 million.

Uniqueness: Roster submission is based on reverse order of Round 1 standings. When you submit your roster (i.e., post in the forum), you will need to make sure that none of your players have already been chosen. I will have an alpha list that will be constantly updated. Once a player has been selected, no other seasons of that player can be submitted by any subsequent owner.

The Draft: The draft order for the first round will be determined randomly. The order of each subsequent round will be based on lowest cumulative salary to that point. So if you draft the most expensive player each round, you may be picking last each round. This draft is about finding value and weighing the need for the best player vs. the need to pick early the next round. Each owner will be required to draft exactly one of each of the hitting positions (3 OFs), plus 2 part-time hitters (any position), plus exactly 5 SP and 5 RP. The team salaries may end up ranging from 95M to 105M or something similar.  There is no official salary cap for this league.

Remaining Roster: The rest of your roster (5 players) will be filled with any hitters or pitchers with salaries under $300K (using 1951-2011 players not part of the draft pool. Note that players between 300K and 1M should not appear on any rosters.

League Name: Dual Franchise
Salary Cap: $110 Million

Description: Pick two franchises (using only players from 1901-2011). Construct your roster using only players from those two franchises. See baseball-reference for all the various teams that make up one franchise (i.e., 1901 Milwaukee Brewers / 1902-1953 St. Louis Browns / 1954-2010 Baltimore Orioles = one franchise). You must use at least 12 players from each franchise and you must spend at least $50 million on each franchise. There are no hitting/pitching requirements. The DH will be in use for this league.

League Name: One Hall of Famer
Salary Cap: $120 Million

Description: This theme is similar to jfranco77’s “Favorite Player” theme. The concept of this theme is that each owner will select one “community” player. This player cannot be in the Baseball Hall of Fame There are some other requirements on the community player that are described below. In building your roster, you will then choose any season of each of these 24 players. Your 25th player must be a Hall of Famer. Also, you must use the ballpark of the HOFer you chose (and the appropriate season).

Community Player Requirements:
The community player must have at least 5 WIS-eligible seasons.
The community player must have at least one season with a salary under $1 million
The community player (hitter) must have at least two seasons with a salary over $4 million
The community player (starting pitcher) must have at least two seasons with a salary over $6 million
The community player (relief pitcher) must have at least two seasons with a salary over $2.5 million

The idea is to choose players with multiple usable seasons. If you choose a player with no good expensive season, then all 24 owners will take his cheap season and you’ve added nothing to this theme.

In order to make sure we have all the positions covered, we will slot players into the following positions.

HITTERS: 13
C: (choose 2)
1B: (choose 1)
2B: (choose 1)
3B: (choose 1)
SS: (choose 1)
1B or 3B: (choose 1)
2B or SS: (choose 1)
OF: (choose 5)

PITCHERS: 11
SP: (choose 6)
RP: (choose 4)
Any Pitcher: (choose 1)

For the 90m league: can a player's past teammate be used if they're a current teammate?  If I choose 2011 Justin Verlander, can I select 2010 Miguel Cabrera as his tag-along?
9/12/2011 10:36 PM

Yes.

In the $120M league, what decides which owner gets to nominate which position?
9/14/2011 2:33 PM
It will be first-come, first-serve, once I post the thread.  I don't see any real advantage to posting early or late, since everybody has to use a version of each player anyway.  For players at multiple positions (like A-Rod), I will be fliexible at where he gets slotted (based on who else gets nominated)
9/15/2011 3:01 PM
Shouldn't there be only 24 community players and not 25 (you've got 14 hitters and 11 pitchers)?
9/16/2011 11:01 AM
Good catch.  I modified the hitting requirements (removed "Any Hitter").
9/16/2011 1:56 PM
In the $120 League, if a player falls into more then one category (SP and RP) does he have to meet both requirements or just one?
9/16/2011 3:27 PM
If a player was mostly used as a SP, then he would need to fullfill the SP requirement.  If the pitcher was used mostly as a RP, then he'd need to fullfill the RP requirement.  So, the pitcher only has to fullfill one requirement, not both.  Of course, you can pick any season of the player to roster, regardless of where he is slotted.

The idea is to nominate players that have multiple usable seasons, but also allow each owner to use a low-salaried season if he doesn't want to use his usable seasons.  The more flexibility the player has, the better option he is.
