Hendrix is a damn good pitcher, but if he's really that bad halfway through, just dump him for another good pitcher and quit HOPING that he'll turn it around. I don't think many big league GMs would keep a job if they didn't attempt to shore up their rotation when their supposed 'ace' has gotten clobbered for half a season, under the proposition that half a season is only a "small sample size". I say make a move before its too late.
There seems to be a misconception that you can get a "bad" version of a player-year. According to admin, the sim simply doesn't work that way. You know the underlying stats upon which a player's performance is based; real-life GMs do not. Real-life GMs also face issues of injuries and personality conflicts.
To me there are only 4 reasons to use the WW:
1) You dumped your $200K scrubs and want to pick up a usable bat or arm. This is the best and only systemic reason for utilizing the WW.
2) You plain drafted wrong. You either accidently selcted the wrong player-year or you tried a strategy that just doesn't work. Drafting a 700ip pitcher as your ace or drafting a modern right-handed slugger as your power threat could be an example of this. (Another example: I once tried very low oavg, high BB/9 pitchers in relief. I wound up dumping them and a position player to construct a relief corps that worked.)
3) You drew a stud AAA player that made one of your regulars unecessary
and you can't trade that AAA for a better fit. The first part happens enough, though in general, to me, trading seems under-used in this case.
4) For what-ever reason your in-division or in-league opponents don't mesh well with your strategy. I think this is way over-used as a rationale, but it does rarely happen... Perhaps there are 3 Coors teams in your division and you tried squeaking by with 1100 ip at Safeco...
