Why height/weight need to matter Topic

33-32 The jump hook by Robert Shutts is blocked by Howard Roth

In of itself it doesn't seem like too big of a deal but when you consider Robert Shutts is 7'2 with 98 athleticism and Roth is 6'8 with 92ath and you think about how hard jump hooks are to block to begin with, a guy at a 6 inch height disadvantage and a slightly worse athlete probably shouldn't be able to block a jump hook. This is the equivalent to Dwyane Wade blocking a jump hook from Dwight Howard.

There are other situations where I think height+weight should be a multiplier. In this same situation if Roth was defending Shutts 1 on1 he should do a decent jump because of his 92ath/55sp/99D/A IQ to Shutts' 98ath/62sp/99lp/69per/54bh/A- IQ. Purelly off of ath/sp/D/IQ Roth is a great guy to guard Shutts but that doesn't consider that he's giving away 6 inches in height and 44 pounds in weight. Even being a great athlete and having great defensive fundamentals there is just no way you can make up the difference of the physical edge.

It isn't that tough to imagine... DWade catching DHoward peaking for CBosch and/or LeBron ...?

I think the jump hook is the problem, not the skill sets.  Jump hook is just window dressing.  Just realize it could have been any shot that was blocked and I think you'll live with it a little easier.

Every example you guys posted was with the big guy being nowhere near the peak of the jump, of course Mugsy can block Ewing if the ball isn't even 8 feet in the air, or Wade can block Howard when the ball is at the bottom of the backboard. I guess if you look at the actual shot as window dressing then it's conceivable the shot could be blocked.

But you guys missed my main point, from a matchup standpoint a guy with a 6 inch height advantage and 40+ pound weight advantage will have an enormous physical edge but when height doesn't matter and we are just looking at ath/sp/D/blk rating to decide how good of a defender somebody is it doesn't tell the whole story.

I saw Nate Robinson block Yao Ming's shot before.  Roughly a what, 2 foot height advantage?  It happens.

Height is built into your players ratings. Plus nowhere in your example at the top did it mention 'at the height of his peak jump while shooting a hook shot' so that defense really doesn't hold any water.

Dude got stuffed trying to take a hook shot.  Happy?

Also, the other team plays zone so you don't know if it was a 1 on 1 matchup.  He very easily could have come from the side to block the shot.

Still missing the point guys. I'll repost what my main point is:

Kinda how like a 43 speed guy can match up with 80 speed guy? ;)

You should prolly read what everyone has said before you tell all of us we don't understand what you are saying. You're example was not one of the best for 'height should matter'. You have no idea HOW or WHERE the ball was blocked.
