2012 - Doomsday Tournament: What's On Your Mind? Topic

I'll start this off:

After 8 games, I'm holding true to my "about .500" standard as an owner.  I think my total record right now for all 23 teams is one game over .500.

As usual, some of the teams I didn't give a second thought about are doing fairly well and some of the teams I thought would kick *** are doing amazingly bad.

One bright spot though - through 8 games, there's only two teams out of the entire 480 that is undefeated so far (8-0), and I've got one of them...the 1990-1991 Blue Jays.  DAHSDEBATER has the other with the 1925-1926 Philadelphia Athletics.

What say you?

Across all my 10  teams, I seem to have one thing in common with all of them...my bullpens can't hold a lead (except 1, see below).  3 times a day i read box scores, thinking "i'm up 5 runs in the 7th, i'll get this win"...only to lose the game.  It has to get better lol.

Overall record after 8 games:  35-45

Worst team:  1933-34 Chicago Cubs (2-6)...top 3 starters have ERA's of 11.70, 7.24, and 9.82

Best team:  1943-44 Pittsburgh Pirates (6-2)...closer Joe Berry, a free agent pickup, 5.2 IP, 4 saves, 0.00 ERA, 0.18 WHIP

Only have 1 set of teams, 2009-10 Tampa Bay Rays and the 1944-45 St. Louis Cardinals.  Oddly, the Cards are off to the better start record-wise, but trail in their division to Juice's Yankees (7-1), while the Rays are just 4-4, but are in first in their division. Free agent pick up Troy Tulowitzki hasn't hit anything yet, so hopefully when/if he gets going that will spark a little run.

As per my comments in the sitemail I sent out earlier about the “tournament leaders” page, this was Admin’s response:

The custom page we've done for the WIS tourney shows user record across multiple leagues.

What you're asking for is rather different, though. Trying to show leaders spanning multiple leagues is not something we've done in the past, although possible with quite a bit of effort.

How beneficial would a league leaders page spanning multiple leagues be for you and the users playing? Would that be the most important page you're asking for? Would it be used again in future multi-league tournaments?

Thanks

My reply  back:

A league leaders page would be incredibly popular amongst the owners in here! Not only in this tournament but in any future tournaments that I or anyone else puts together. I honestly think it would be an extra incentive that could even get owners that are "on the fence" to take the leap and sign up for something they may have balked at before.

I don't know about the kind of effort or work you're referring to since I know nothing about programming but, if it can be done, I and all of the others would be extremely grateful.

I’ll keep you posted on their answer…

I want to mention the unbelievable job Pat did to put this thing together.
Didn't think there was any way 20 leagues would get filled. KUDOS!
KUDOS also for the way everybody got their teams in so fast.
Also can't believe we had no awol owners whose teams had to be adopted.
Great job Pat and everybody!!

Well, my 90-91 Blue Jays made it nine in a row before suffering their first loss - and wouldn't you know they'd lose to the....

89-90 Blue Jays.

After 10 games, my 13 teams are a combined 63-67.

3 teams in 1st
3 teams in 2nd
6 teams in 3rd
2 teams in 4th

Pleasant surprise--1984-85 Yankees at 7-3, averaging 6.2 runs per game. They were one of the last times I signed up to take.
Unpleasant surprise- 1906-07 Cubs at 2-8, giving up an average of 6.9 runs per game. They were the second team I signed up to take.

After 10 games, my 12 teams are a combined 64-56.  Not too bad.  Most of them are right around .500, or a little over.

The '35-36 Tigers are killing me at 2-8 and already 5 games out.  The offense has been ok, averaging 5.4 runs per game.  Hammerin' Hank Greenberg is disappointing with a .200 avg and no homeruns.  1935 Charlie Gehringer has been the real problem though.  Hitting an abysmal .139 through 10 games.  The rest of the offense has been ok on a team that is going to live and die with power.  The pitching has given up an average of 7.1 runs per game.  Free agent Carl Hubbell has been a major disappointment.  He's off to an 0-3 start with a 7.40 ERA.  Plenty of time to turn it around though.

The best team I have right now is the 8-2 93-94 Giants.  They have gotten great pitching from free agents David Cone (3-0 2.05) and Roger Clemens (2-0 3.07) and strong offense from 2 Barry Bonds', free agent Jeff Bagwell, and the real surprise, 1994 Matt Williams (5 HR, 12 RBI, .343 avg).

So far Juice, this is a great format.  I am glad I came out of WIS retirement in July and found this tourney.  Very different and enjoyable.  I had played for awhile with a different name and used my work email as my email for here.  I stopped when I switched jobs and wanted to get back into it, so I had to start fresh when I couldn't remember my password.  It's just as fun as I remembered and this is a great format to get back into it.  Thanks for taking the time to set it up.  Good luck to everyone the rest of the way.

My 5 Teams after 11 games are 26-29.  As noted in another league, I just had looked at my SLB Rating and was amazed to see that I had played 70 full seasons and my overall record was 5347-5347, exactly at .500 after almost 1700 games.  Amazingly average .

Disapponted thus far with my pair of Don Drysdale's with the 62/63 Dodgers - OK, so I know it is still early, they are 0-6 with a 7.82 ERA and 1.84 WHIP.

In the 12 games I had in the PM2 games for Oct. 31, had 9 SV opportunities (8 for me), and 5 of them get blown.  Does this seem like a high rate for anyone else?

I blow numerous saves every set of games.  I almost assume its going to happen every game now.
