Promotion/Demotion Topic

I promoted a guy from AA to ML and got no promotion bonus of any kind. Then I demoted him to AAA later on and he took a huge demotion hit. Is that common, because it seems hugely inconsistent. A guy gets doesn't get any kind of bonus for being promoted to the majors, but takes a reduction for getting demoted to a higher level than he was at in the first place. It's ridiculous.

Can you link the player?

He got ****** you were messing him about.

I've never considered the 'promotion bump' more than a dev cycle display line; occuring if a dev cycle is due. Demotion penalties are a (semi) player specific quantification of player unhappiness.

If you don't demote players you're unwilling to see get a demotion penalty, you never have a complaint.

I'll link the player later...can't get on HBD at work.

Crump - a guy went on the DL, so I decided to give a AA guy some work at the ML level before dropping him down to AAA. I know real life comparisons aren't always apt, but if we're going to assume a fake player's "unhappiness", then there should be credit for a promotion. In real life, if you say to a guy in AA, "K, we're going to give you a shot in the bigs for a few weeks, then send you to AAA", I guarantee he's not going to throw a hissy fit once he's sent down and act like he got treated unfairly. Not every promotion/demotion should have huge impacts on a player.

Not every one is.

If you do it right, there is no demotion penalty for promoting a guy as a DL replacement, then sending him down when the guy come off the DL.

Why does this come up every 3-4 months?

Remove the demotion penalty and everyone with a brain runs a 40 man BL roster instead of 25.  Durability for position players and DUR/STM for pitchers are no longer of any concern.

Don't want a demotion penalty?  Don't demote.

I don't recall saying get rid of demotion penalties. But there should be some consistency. A guy gets no boost to his "happiness" from a big league promotion, but suddenly has his morale crushed by being demoted to AAA, despite starting the season at AA? Clear logic in that.

He felt he belonged in the big.   Getting what you deserve doesn't bring happiness.   Might even bring resentment because you thought it should have occurred earlier.

Being sent back to where you KNOW you don't belong is a poop sandwich on a platter.

Make sense?

If you credit for the promotion and then deduct for the demotion, the net effect is no demotion penalty and we're back where Mike started.

You said this happened because of someone going on the DL - did you handle all of that stuff at the same time?  I thought they had made it so that a guy who was called up as an injury replacement and then sent back down when someone came off the DL wouldn't take a hit.

Not really. It's hard to make an argument based on a fake player's mindset, but a second year player in AA shouldn't really feel entitled to a big league roster spot, even if he's the next Tim Lincecum. Teams give guys a cup of coffee all the time, to cover for a DL guy or give them a taste of what's waiting for them, before sending them back down for more seasoning. Those players don't just suddenly lose it and see a decline in their abilities because of the move.

And to answer you rquestion, no I didn't make the moves at the same time. And yes, I'm now aware that likely would have saved the hit.
2/27/2012 1:35 PM
Really?  The worst worker in the world believes he deserves more.   Are you saying ballplayers have a different mindset?
2/27/2012 1:38 PM
If you're a second year guy at a big company and you think you're entitled to a partner position, you'll probably be seeing the door very quickly.

I'm pretty sure almost every college graduate thinks they should be running the company in their 2nd year.
