Trying a disaster ML rebuild (NEW) Topic

Ok so since I am impatient and the world I was in never filled a spot after I signed up I joined a new league where I was given the last spot in that world to fill the world. The team I took over has no good ML players but not any "Bad" contracts so maybe I can get rid of some of these ML players and make some FA signings and some trades for prospects to build up this ML team and make them a playoff team this season.
Last season the team finished 4th in the division with a 70-92 record, not a bad record for the team but not good either. The team finished 34 games behind the 1st place team and is awarded the 6th overall pick in the Amateur draft this season.

Step One- Looking over the ML position players and doing position changes before the budgeting starts. I will use recommended setting then adjust if needed to my likings.

Gleason is not a bad defensive Catcher and I am in a defensive balpark so his AS is great, his AA is great, and his PC is very good as well. He doesne have a good bat with awful splits but he will be used as a Catcher so it doesn't matter to me what his bat is like. I ned a good PC.

Recchio is also another good defensive catcher with good PC but his health is awful like Gleasons so I will have to carry two catchers on the roster if one is injured.

Kevin Martin has the 1B defensive rationgs but his bat stinks, I know Im in a pitchers park but so far this team has NO OFFENSE!! His contact is good, his power is below AVG. he is a good VSL batter, bad VSR batter, and his BE is avg. I will have to eat his contract this season at 5.2M unless I can find someone to trade for him and a prospect for a ML player.

Rudy Snow is a really good defensive 2B. He isnt to bad with a bat either and wants 4.2M in ARB. His contact is Avg, Power is low, VSL is great at 81, VSR isnt to bad at 61, and his BE is about AVG. I'm thinking of giving him his 4.2 or maybe a little less in ARB to resign him.

Park is my 3B making 1.9M this season and he has good 3B defensive ratings. Parks bat isnt to bad either, it's not where I would like but it isn't bad enough to complain about IMO. He has 39 cont which is low, his 79 power is good, his splits are about avg, and his BE is a litle lesser then avg. He will do unless I can find a better hitter with great defense elsewhere then he will be my backup 3B.

Albert will be a defensive backup and that's really all I can say about him. His defense is great for my SS but the bat stinks. Really good middle infielder.

Clay wants 4.9 mill in ARB.......yeah Good Luck on that. He wont be on the Rainiers roster this season.

http://whatif.cincinatti.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3368085
Vazquez wants 1.7M in ARB and that is what he will get. He has the bat Im looking for with splits and power in the 70s and and CNT and BE in the 60s.

http://whatif.cincinatti.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2999217
Bert is a defensive 2B but wont be offered his 1.3M in ARB.

http://whatif.cincinatti.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2999222
Cleatus Heath may just be my new 2B and leadoff guy. With the 2B defense ratings and his BE and CNT he will be offered his 378K in ARB.

http://whatif.cincinatti.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=3779547
Zoltan making his 343K contract will surely be on the Rainiers roster this season. He has a few lower then what I want ratings at the RF position but his Bat is great.

Budgeting...

Ok so I listened to a few other guys in the other topic I had previously posted and am follwing hbddean and his ML rebuild budgeting.

Payroll I will have 110M to work with and since I have only a little over 15 M in contracts that give me about 95M to work with to sign players and maybe drop some of these bad players either in trade or on the waivers.

For my rospect payroll I will go very conservative in signing my players and onlu use 6M for this. All i really need to do is sign that #1 pick and I'll be OK. Maybe I can have a good draft class and get a good player and the #41 pick as well.

Coaches payroll- I only need a little less then 6M to sign them all with the least contract but since my FI will be testing the market Im gonna have around 2.5M to offer him with my payroll set at 8M.

College scouting- I will move to 12M since I would rather sign a college kid then a HS kid since it wont take as long to reach the ML level

Highschool scouting- I will kep this at 10M just in case so I can see some good HS kids incase I want to sign him instead.

International prospects- I will set at 6M since I heard it takes so much money to sign just 1 INT guy I don't even want to fool with them.

Advance scouting I will set at 6M aince I will be seeing players at the ML level who is close to or has reached their prime this doesn't matter to much to me.

Training- I had previously had this set lower but a few guys told me that is keeps my ML vets fom diminishing so fast so I will set this at 14M

Medical- I will set at 13M and hope I don't have any injuries but if I do maybe they will heal fast and be able to return to the lineup.

2 things.  Clay Buckley is awesome, in my opinion.  I'd give him his 4.9 in arb.  The other thing is more debatable, and is another opinion of mine.  It is that since you are in such a strong pitcher's park, you need to concentrate primarily on improving your offense.  The park takes care of pitching, pitch calling, and defense for you, at least for your home games.   Obviously you should build the strongest all around team as possible, but Tacoma will suppress the opposition's runs for you, and you will need an offense potent enough to score runs despite your park.  I get the sense from your comments that your opinion is that since you are in a pitcher's park that you need good pitching and defense - I assert the opposite.

*  Underlining is to make sure that nobody accuses me of telling anyone that they should neglect pitching and defense.

  • The sixth pick is also awesome draft position - MAX your draft scouting budgets!  You can bring them back down next season.
  • Set your coaching budget to 9 just to be sure.
  • Max your training and medical budgets - just believe me on this.
With these suggestions, you will have 99M to spend instead of 110.  Still plenty, but you will be better set up for the future - this is a "dynasty" game, you're not just playing this one season, right?

No I will be there a while.

we will see on Buckley. He does have great defense but I was kind of not wanting to sign him for 4.9M, I may do it though since he does have great power.

yes your assesment of buckley is way off...compare his  avg/obp/slg to your 3B who you were much higher on...it is difficult to find a SS with average defense who can OPS 700 and buckley is above average defensively
4/7/2012 1:01 PM
Pay attention to these guys.  Clay Buckley is a bordeline superstar talent and a very rare find.  A slick-fielding SS who can also drive in runs is all that it takes to make an average team a WS contender because they are so rare.  If it were me, no matter how much he asked for, I'd pay it.  Well...at least up to around the $15mil mark.
4/7/2012 3:26 PM

Also, among the pitchers, Sellers is a definite keeper and Powell is a maybe.

4/7/2012 3:34 PM
Buckley should be signed to a 5 year deal if he's reasonable right now.  That will carry him until he's 31.    He might start to fall off defensively then.
4/7/2012 3:34 PM
You have very strong opinions for a game you haven't played.
4/7/2012 4:15 PM
I'm listening to you guys. The season has rolled and budgets start in the AM. I have them set now and here is what they will look like.

Player payroll                       92M
Prospect payroll                     7M
Coach payroll                       10M
College scout                       14M
HS scout                              14M
International                           6M
Advance                               14M
Training                                14M
Medical                                 14M

If you are planning on trading, you might get ripped off because of your inexperience and lack of advanced scouting. Be careful.
