How to take advantage of superior speed? Topic

How does one take advantage of players superior speed?  My PG (playing shooting guard) Dionne is a:

99 speed
100 BH
99 perimeter

To me it seems like this player should be a scoring machine.  He should be able to penetrate and score fairly easily and should draw lots of fouls.  As well you would think he would have a great shooting percentage as he should be able to create seperation with his speed and ball handling skills and then knock down the outside shoot with his perimeter.

So far this season he results have been extremely up and down.  Against really poor teams he has been great.  Against better teams he has been bad.  Over the last 5 games he been defended by the following guards with speeds of:

84, 91, 89, 85 and 70.

On average he has been 10 to 15 points faster than the guy guarding him.  To be fair these 5 players have been pretty solid Defenders but he is shooting the following percentages:

5-13
4-13
5-14
5-11
4-13

For a grand total of 35%.  I had him for a while at +1 and have since moved him to 0 in order to get a bit more penetration from him.

Is this player just have a rough run over the last 5 games or am  doing something wrong?  How do I get more out of this guy?  What setting would you put him at to take advantage of his skills?  Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated?

Thanks

What's his iq of the offense?
Are other teams doubling him?

His IQ is A.  He is a senior in the motion offense.  I have noticed that he has been doubled a few times this season.  So maybe 1 or 2 of those past 5 games he has been doubled.

He's not shooting enough 3s.  That's one of the best shooters you can can have, let him jack the tre's.

So you would suggest putting him at +2?  He is only shooting 33 for 85 from 3pt range.  38%.  (through 11 games) I am with you in thinking he should be dynamite from long range but he doesn't seem to be succeeding.  That is why I moved him down to 0 hoping he would penetrate more and score near the basket.

No, JJ you are right.  Superior speed means you want him driving more than shooting 3's

Althought with 99 perimeter, he should be able to do everything.   Usually when I see this its because hie compliomentary players are weak and it pulls down the studs stats.

Thanks mully.  That is why I have had him around 0 and +1 hoping to take advantage of both his perimeter and speed to drive.  His supporting cast isn't horrible.  My PG I think is pretty solid and the SF can shoot from the perimeter as well.  PF has very good LP.  Not sure what to do.  After looking at my team, what is your suggestion mully?

You might try putting him as backup pg and sg and starting Hurd instead.  Hurd is no slouch himself and if you put Dionne at backup of both positions, he should still get the same minutes.  And he'd be playing against backup players, obviously.

Also, while he has had a bit of a sp advantage against defenders, the defenders have generally enjoyed an ath advantage on him. So that tends to even things out. In your tough matchups, I would not say that he had a very clear advantage over those defenders.

Also ... sample size.

Agreed.

He has definitely been out matched at times in ATH and played against some solid Defenders, but the results have seemed a bit extreme.  Girt25 what would you do with Dionne?   Maintain what has been the strategy.  (Highest distro, +1 or 0 from the perimeter) or would you put him as a back-up (udm_mike) or launching three's  (tkimbe)?  Something has obviously worked for you in winning those 8 championships.  Appreciate the insight.  Thanks

i dont agree with this at all. spd/per/bh are the keys to a great 3 point shooter, IMO, and if you want to drive more, get some ath and lp.

Would you put him at +2 billy?

jj i think you are thinking about speed wrong. its not like in HD, your player can be so fast the other team can't keep up with him. i am pretty sure that HD calculates "abilities" of players. so the guy defending your guard, they take his ath and def (primarily) and then a host of other factors, and come up with some defensive score, that gets used against your offensive score. so just having a speed advantage tells a very small part of the story, IMO.

you also push your players for a lot of minutes. thats fine, probably smart, as you have a huge talent gap from starters to backups. but its going to result in a poorer performance than you would expect from those guys, playing with real backups. also, you are running slowdown. all in all, you simply have to expect lower fg% if you are not running normal tempo than if you are running normal tempo. im not saying you shouldn't be running slowdown, just that, between slowdown and the fatigue, you have to expect lower performance.

i agree with previous sentiments that hurd should be a bigger part of the equation. not a starter, though. something just feels off about your team, i just can't place it, maybe its just overall performance degradation from the fatigue and slowdown. why don't u try moving him to pg and see if that helps...
