I do not like the idea of discontinuing the Spring League. I use the Spring team to do searches for players for Theme leagues. The Developer chat makes it sound like it's a done deal, and that sucks.

Actually, I think this is a great development overall. I do use my spring team to do research and build keeper lists for progressives, etc.

I would really like to see them add what aec had over at wissearch and allow us a certain number of "teams" we can use for research or comparing teams or for progressive keepers that we can use to build teams before loading them into our actual teams for play.

Where on the site was this mentioned?  And what was the reason given?

I can't argue that giving IDs that have never purchased a full-season team unlimited spring teams is a good idea.  But it seems to me if you're buying teams regularly you should have access to spring leagues.  Maybe if you haven't bought a team in a year, then you'd get cut off.

i use an unfielded spring team to determine who my AAA players are as well as putting together various teams and combinations in advance of fielding a new team...if the spring team is eliminated, i'd have to pay $12.95 for the privilege of having an regular, but unfielded, team instead.

which i'm not currently inclined to do.

They shold add EVERYTHING about that site - a phenomenal variety of stat options, you could select multiple batters or pitchers from multiple searches and compare them side-by-side will full sorting features, AAA ID features (just plug in the ratings and basic info, no need to consult the Charts), you name it.  A great site, the demise of which definitely lessened my WIS experience.

Completely agree. that site was excellent for team building. I loved the ability to export/import my teams as CSV files so I could draft virtually unlimited teams and just save them all as a CSV file to import into the draft center when ready to use it. The compare features where also of immense value. I didn't play in OLs or many leagues that allowed AAA while wissearch was active, so I didn't really ever use the AAA ID features, but I heard rave reviews on them from those that did use them.

I fully agree that WIS should implement virtually everything wissearch had to offer, but especially with the killing of the spring teams, it would be very nice to have the ability to have a space we can utilize the draft center for research without having to use open teams.

"

WHAT ABOUT THE PRICE WILL IT GO DOWN OR UP (gees51 - Hall of Famer - 1:21 PM)

It will remain the same; however, we will be doing away with the Spring League season concept and replacing it with a first full-season free model. That way, newcomers to the game can enjoy a true season (with waivers, trades, new trade chat, promotions/demotions, etc.) and will hopefully stick around longer. We'll have to introduce some safety measures to prevent users wanting to take advantage of this with multiple accounts, but we already have those lined up."

This site was light years ahead of what WIS offered or offers now.  I was glad to spend the cash to access this site.  As others have stated, it had many more options that were helpful in building teams.

Is there a plausible reason to do away with the spring teams?

CORPORATE GREED

The reason I understood from the chat was to cut down on the attrition rate for new sign ups that play a spring league or two and then don't play again. Giving away a free full season team instead immerses new sign ups in the process and essence of WIS and should, theoretically, create more repeat business and lasting customers than the spring team model is doing.

I don't know if admin understands the extent to which owners use their spring teams for research though which is why I hope that with this business model change (one that I think is a good long term change for increasing the user base) they will also add functionality for those of us that use these teams for research purposes.

Exactly.  I don't understand why they think giving away a free full-season team to new sign ups (a good idea, by the way) means the rest of us won't need spring leagues anymore.

Every year, they release the player spreadsheets.

Just take them and turn them into your spring team queries.  I use them, heavilly modified, to build my progressive leage draft lists.

If you're familiar with SQL , you can load those files into a database, and do queries that return just about anything you want (ie: Best fielding catcher who also qualifies at 3B with 500 PA and at least 8 triples is a possible query)

If the spreadsheets they released had more of the rate stats HR/100, 3B/100, etc., or included raw XBH totals with raw AB and PA numbers rather than AB/162 and PA/162, then you could definitely and relatively easily modify them to perform whatever searches you need for research, but as they are, the usability of those sheets for research are somewhat limited, especially for those that use the spring team as a way to build their progressive team for posting keepers or for comparing players side by side or for drafting whole teams for testing ideas and strategies (without having to actually enter teams into a league).

I've got the lahmen database heavily modified with full normalized and # stats, as well as all the league averages, from 1871-2005, but I haven't had time to add in the 2006-2011 data and I've recently attempted to use the player spreadsheets to create a quick sheet for researching HR/100 # and 1B/100 # (I already added in all the seasonal league data until I realized I had no easy way of alfinding HR/100 or 1B/100 as they don't include 2B or 3B and AB were prorated...
