Practice Questions (Returning to the Game) Topic

Just getting back into the game after several years away.  Have a few questions on practice time:
  • What is the standard amount for study hall?  Taking over a team that is all 2.0-2.2 GPA, and I don't want to have a big problem on my hands.
  • Also can't seem to find the minutes to uphold a category.  For instance, is 3/5/7 minutes enough to keep my big man's 34 passing rating where it's at?  Does it change for my best player's 91 perimeter rating if I just want to hold?
  • Strategically, would you hold on all red categories?  For instance, the latter player's PER is red , his only blue is LP (only whites are REB, P, WE).  So would you recommend putting some decent points in LP, REB, P, or keep it more balanced to try to get even minor gains in red categories?
Bonus Question: How did I do in recruiting? (Hungate and Murphy)
Thanks a lot for any help; I appreciate it!

for the second question it is 7 for most skills, and 3 for LP/PER

IMHO, a lot of coaches are way to aggressive on study hall.  I like the old 2.8 - GPA for seniors; 3.2 - GPA for Juniors, 3.6 - GPA for Sophomores.  You can shave a minute or two off of that to start the season, as long as you remember to adjust at mid-terms, but for very low GPA's you really take a risk on ineligibility by going lower.

I always over study there FR.season.Anything under 2.5 I give 20 mins.then adjust at midterm.under 3.0 I go with 15.anything else 10.Get them thru there 1st year over 3.0 and you can set it at 5 or less the rest of there time.As far as keeping up there ratings, it depends on there work ethic. Some low WE guys you have to keep higher mins.on.

I go 5 study hall minutes as frosh and 3 as sophs and adjust aggressively at mid term.  You'll quite often not have to adjust at all, but don't be afraid to shoot up to double digits if anyone is 2.5 or below.

I go 7 or 5 as freshmen and then zero from then on out.  Of course, I lose a player every 5 or 6 seasons.....

As freshman, I go from 3 (4.0) to about 12 (2.0) depending on their HS GPA. I adjust up at midterms if they're in trouble and I adjust down at finals if they get a 3.0 or higher. Most of my players will be at 0 SH minutes by the end of their sophomore year.

Thanks for all the help; looks like I should go 10+ on SH minutes.  Appreciate the help!

For the second question, it depends on the player's WE and how far he is away from his potential in that rating category.  For example, if he is red in passing, it will require fewer minutes to maintain that rating than if he is blue.  If he is maxed out in a category, you can sometimes maintain that rating using 0 mins.  I'd like to hear some other people's opinions on this as well.  If you see a maxed out area, do you usually put 0 mins in that area?

Brian, I always start them at 8 and adjust when mid terms come up. I think 10+ is overkill unless the guy is a retard. Using 8 min to start, I've played 65 seasons on this ID and about another 40 on my other IDs and I think I might have had 3 players combined go ineligible. 8 might even be too much according to some coaches.

Here's what I often do with study hall, and I've NEVER lost a player to grades.

I start players at 10 minutes of study hall when they come in as freshmen. If the guy does well on mid-terms (3.0 or above) I'll adjust down to 5 minutes, if he does okay I leave it, and if he's highlighted yellow in the report at any time, I increase whatever he's at by 5 minutes.

Once the guy is a sophomore, I adjust to zero and hope it works. Sometimes I'll have to bump a guy up to 5 again if he's yellow on the report.

Most of my guys are above 3.0 at all times, with a few in the high 2s. You may say what I do is a little overkill, but most of my players also max out their skills too, and as I said, I've NEVER lost a player to grades.

I go 7 with freshmen and adjust if they are failing at midterms. 0 with everything else, and of course adjust if they are failing at midterms. If you start any higher than 7 you are probably wasting time they could be practicing.

The only time I lose players with this strategy is when I don't pay attention and forget to read the midterm report.

Good advice.  I have juniors that are at an even 2.0 - is 7/8 enough, or even lower?  I understand the approach from when they come in the program, but since this is my first year at the school, I have to deal with these upperclassmen that have low grades (all SO/JR between 2.0-2.2)!

Thanks!

I've found that in general when you take over sim teams they all have gpas around 2-2.5. Just do a normal sh amount and they'll be fine.

maxed out and almost maxed out areas should always be at 0 if there is anything else meaningful to practice. there are maybe strange exceptions one can dream up but i often go with all 0s in all red categories for freshman and sophmores, only changing if its a core and i see it drop. ill switch up once they are red or low black in anything that matters, and start trying to extract those last couple points out of them. this is ESPECIALLY true with guys with high work ethic, you should really never practice red areas if there is valuable use for the minutes elsewhere - that high WE will minimize already minimal losses, and off season improvement will often max these categories out about as quickly as you could have done it yourself.
