Punting a draft pick Topic

So, with the No. 4 pick, I selected a "probably won't sign" guy, hoping that he would  decline the offer and I'd ultimately recoup a comp pick in next year's draft.

HOWEVER, I'm simultaneously in an IFA race and the $8M offer I have out to him may complicate things. If I withdraw the offer to the draft pick and offer it back to him again, say, a few days from now, would that screw up the process? I can shed salary to get the 8M back (I hope), but it'll take some time.

Thanks.

It won't matter. So long as you can re-offer the result will be the same.

I'd confirm that before moving on.  I don't think you can withdraw the offer from the draft pick and still be eligible to get a type D pick next year even if you offer him the same later.  Not 100% though.

Ditto, my understanding is that you cannot pull the offer.

You make the offer, he either accepts or rejects.
If he rejects you get a comp pick.
It really isn't any more complicated than that.

you have to wait for him to reject though.  Can't pull it before that.  It seems that's what he was asking.

This is my understanding.
I don't think I've ever tested it, but according to the knowledge base article, if you withdraw the offer at any time you will not receive compensation.

The knowledge base article does seem to read as though if you ever withdraw you will forfeit the comp pick.

So I guess that's the case.

Wonder if anyone has actually tried it?

4 years of HBD and still learning nuances of the game.

I just signed a pick for less than his 2nd request.   He wanted 2m.  I offered it.   He came back and asked for 3m.   I only had 2.5m, I offered and he accepted on the next cycle.   Never had that happen before.

I do that pretty often.
Once he has rejected your initial offer, you can **** around with his contract offer all you want, and they will accept less than they are asking.
However, I don't think you can mess around with the original offer and still get compensation if the guy rejects your offer and never signs.

So, seems like the consensus is not to pull it. I'd want to see how the experiment played out if I did, but probably not the best timing for me.

I once had a top draftee give me the flat-out rejection, the kind with the big red X where you cannot make a subsequent offer from the "Amateur Draft Results" page.  However, I hung onto the rejection email in my inbox, because that had a direct link to the negotiation page for him..

I figured he was worth taking another chance on, because he was far better than I would have reasonably expected to see or get as a Type D the following season.  So I was able to resubmit my original offer (the one he originally rejected), and after a few days he accepted.

I have a little different question regarding punting a draft pick. In PineTar I wasn't thrilled with my 1st rounder so I decided not to sign him until the IFA season ended since he was a holdout anyway. A better IFA than him didn't come along so I met his new demands of 8.6 mil, the most I've ever paid a draft pick I believe. My minor league teams all made the PO's with a bye, except Rookie didn't make the PO's at all. They are now heading into their PO games. The Sim assigned my #1 guy to the rookie team. I have yet to promote him. I had read on here that if you play a late signee late that it basically uses up a year of the players development therefore stunting him. What is the opinion of others on this? Should I promote the player to A ball or just let him sit until ST? I would hate to lose a season of development for the player. But if he stands to gain any with an assigning to a PO squad that would be great.

@jibe - I signed an IFA SP after the season and started him in the playoffs. Figured I had to get him as much PT as I could during what would be left of his age 18 season.
He's not going to get to be 18 again after rollover. The way I see it, what matters is how much time a player has left till he stops developing. Hope I'm not wrong.

"Stunted development" is a myth.  Place him in Low A, let him get some time in playoff games, and he will be fine.  You might not see any development this year (unless his team goes deep into the post-season), but he certainly not be "stunted" in any way.
