catcher defense vs offense Topic

Does it behoove me more to have a stud defensive catcher (15 range, 50 glove, 80+ in arm, accuracy, and pitch calling) who is sub 50's in all hitting ratings, or a more balanced offensive catcher (70+ eye, 75+ vsl and vsr 70 power and 65 contact) who is patently average defensively (7 range, 25 glove, 60 arm, 56 accuracy, and 60 pitch  calling)?

I pose this question because my catcher tandem is pretty decent offensively (combined .330 OBP and 24 bombs) but I am 2nd to last in the league at preventing steals - .223% CS) and have given up 191 steals through 145 games.

Depends on your team.   Owners have varying opinions and I've alternated between those two options several times.   If I was strong defensively but lacking a little at the plate, I use the hitter and vice versa.

Do you know dafood?

I am near the bottom in all meaningful offensive categories too. That's the rub here. My current lead catcher in the tandem is 34 and up for a contract renewal, and I am debating whether to bring up a stud defender to get ABs against righties and be a defensive replacement and punt his renewal to go get better pitching. My whole staff just bites this season, despite all having 70+ against righties and 80+ first pitches with all in the 70s or better control. I won 81 with the same group last season, and improved my offense and pitching and had a much worse season from any standpoint. my team obp is best expressed as a series of fart noises rather than numbers, and guys with 78 eye, 80 vsr, 77 contact and 89 power are hitting .239/.315/.420. So, with all that in mind, I am a bit reticent to just punt the offense. If it makes my run differential better to allow less steals and have markedly better pitch calling, I am all for it. doesn't matter if you win 2-1 or 11-10.

If you're having trouble offensively, you need hitting to resolve that problem.   A better defensive catcher won't help that issue.    FWIW, I'd probably let that 34 y/o catcher walk.   The end is near for Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Rafael Escobar

Go with the offense and then use the guy with the better arm as a defensive replacement. Try to make him come in on inning 6 or 7 in close games where you are up. That's what I did with my tandem guys last year and it worked pretty well. Stolen bases don't mean jack if you are down a dozen, but you don't want a guy in scoring position if you are up 1 or 2.

Truth is, you're 29th in scoring, 24th in ERA and have more than the league average in errors.   Changing catcher types won't remedy those woes.

Yeah, my picthers are all garbage, but they were better last season. I had three starters go on the DL for long stretches, and everyone's WHIP wnet up dramatically, with no meaningful changes in positioning, except sacrificing some 2b D to get a good bat in there. He has hit a ton of HR for me, but is not good defensively. I have a problem with having too many COF types and not enough spots for them, but I have always been low in scoring, depsite having players who should be better. Like this guy http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=6537386, who i assumed would be an easy .800+ OPS, and is .239/.307/.412
I guess I should be asking what am i doing wrong with my offense, defense, picthing, and playing this game in general...

He should be better than that.    Just a quick glance at your stats and I can say "Stop trying to steal as much."   98/67 is a poor ratio.    If you're not at least 2/1, lower the attempts.   I prefer at least 70% but you're taking runs off the board with 59%.

Thanks. Just lowered it to average from aggresive. I have a couple guys who can swipe 40 bags, but I guess I am running into too many outs.

The difference between 59% and 70%, at the rate you're attempting, is 18 outs.   That may not seem like a lot but you might have run yourself out of 6 innings.

I probably ran myself out of more when you factor in hit and runs
I just want to get a better handle on how to win in this game, because nothing i try works. I have tried copying the styles and player types successful owners have in place, and that has miserably failed. I have gone defense/pitching heavy and won 70 games. I went super offense heavy this season, and i'm going to win 65 games or so, and have a brutal team ERA and even Brutaler team offense. I just don't get what I am doing wrong, because I have good players.

I always liked the idea of a good came calling catcher because of the trickle down effect. SP does better, pitches more innings, allows you to go the pen later and use your best relievers more often.

It's all about value.  If you go pitching heavy and all the other owners over value pitching you'll lose.  If you go hitting heavy and the owners over value hitting, you'll lose.  Figure out what talent is undervalued and scoop it up at a discount.  In one league your .800 OPS guy is good, in another he's just ok.  It seems like maybe you just need a better feel for the talent level in whatever world you're in.

I'll be so happy if WIS releases an update where you can set stealing aggressiveness for each individual player. I feel like I'm not getting enough out of my 99/75 guys with an 'average' setting. But it drives me mad when my pitchers get picked off due to an 'aggressive' setting.
