AUCTION League - Vol. ONE

An Auction league should be an intriguing concept to try here on WIS.

To my knowledge – this has not been done in basketball themes on What If Sports.

OVERVIEW
• In an AUCTION format, each owner uses his allocated budget of $100 to bid on players, thereby affording each owner an OPPORTUNITY at EVERY PLAYER.
• The Strategic component of budget and spending and assigning dollar values to great players presents a real challenge, and diverges from the traditional ‘snake draft’ or Salary cap leagues that are predicated on What If Sports assigned ‘salary’ figures.
• Owners must account for more variables than a ‘snake draft’, because the AUCTION is a COMPETITION against all owners in the league for EVERY PLAYER.
• AUCTION drafts require AGGRESSIVE & SAVVY owners – the PASSIVE nature of waiting for a turn in a traditional style draft would be a liability.
• To that end, the more experience and knowledge owners should benefit more so than a casual participants here as WhatIfSports.
• The leagues Auction process schedule looks to have the process complete in 19 days, which is about the same period as a ‘snake draft’.
League Set-up and RULES
• Each Franchise starts with $100
• I will allow TRADES – This should add an additional component of strategy, plus it helps balance the unknown of this Auction –
Most owners are accustomed to drafts, so the trading helps ensure owners can still recover if they botch early bids, are left with more money than players, or less money than talent, etc.

PLAYERS
• All players are eligible to be bid upon. No CLONES, ROOKIES, of Waiver Wire.
• The first AUCTION league may benefit from not having a traditional theme salary limit, such as $47 or 52 Million. – only the $100 million Auction dollars.
• Players with Bids are awarded to Teams and are exclusive.
• A Master Alpha based list will help owners locate players, and let owners know when they are scheduled to be auctioned.

LOTS
• Approximately 320 players will be divided into and allocated into EIGHT LOTS, so the LOTS should be 40 players each, manageable and easy to scout.
• The Master Topic Thread will contain a Scheduled Alpha List that determines a players corresponding LOT.
• After the first eight lots are finished, all players not awarded to a team from those initial eight lots, will be placed into LOT NINE. LOT TEN will consist of ANY player that has not been purchased by a league team.

BIDS
• The type of auction is ‘Sealed Bid’ or a ‘Blind Auction’
• In this type of auction all bidders simultaneously (on the same day) submit sealed bids so that no bidder knows the bid of any other participant.
• The highest bidder pays the price they submitted. This type of auction is distinct from the English auction, in that bidders can only submit one bid each. Furthermore, as bidders cannot see the bids of other participants they cannot adjust their own bids accordingly
• OWNERS only bid on players contained in available lots for the specified time period. Lot ONE only, and then LOT TWO only, etc.
• A submitted bid cannot be reduced or changed by the owner – it is final.
• When a LOT closes – the bid is Final, and the player and his bid cost are awarded to the highest biding owner.
• TIES will be awarded to the earliest date mark of site mail.
• SO….Bid High and early.
• The Commissioners bids MUST be sent to a participating owner to ensure the time stamp and prevent from ‘vulture-ing’ bargains.
• The minimum spent on each of the 12 players is $1.
• Bids should be whole dollar amounts – No ‘change’ or fractions, full dollars only.
• Bids should not exceed $100. An owner should not bid more money than the amount his team has left. Do not ‘bounce a check’ by bidding and then winning and being responsible for more than $100.
• The Commissioner reserve the right to resolve disputes by placing a player in Lot 8 or 9, such as in the even an owner is found to have been wrongly awarded a player or if OVER $100, etc.

SCHEDULE
PLEASE try to avoid bidding ahead on future lots – this adds to work load and confusion.
• LOT ONE: Day One & Two: Bids may be submitted any time during DAY TWO, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT TWO: Day three and four: Day 3 should be for examining results of Lot 1, concocting strategy, etc. Bids may be submitted any time during DAY FOUR, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT THREE: Day five and six: Bids may be submitted any time during DAY SIX, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT FOUR: Day seven & eight: Bids may be submitted any time during DAY EIGHT, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT FIVE: Day nine & ten: Bids may be submitted any time during DAY TEN, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT SIX: Day eleven and twelve: Bids may be submitted any time during DAY TWELVE, from midnight start of day to 9 PM Eastern time –
After 9PM Eastern Time, or sometime during the next day, the Commissioner will determine winning bids and update rosters.

• LOT SEVEN: Day 13 & 14:
• LOT EIGHT: Day 14 & 15:
• LOT NINE: DAY 16 & 17:
• LOT TEN: DAY 18 & 19: , from midnight start of day 18 to day 19 9 PM Eastern time – there will be an open forum bid process that sees first come first serve bids on ANY player not awarded.

OWNERS
• Your main responsibility is to not bid over $100 for your team. Do not try to float above that amount with excessive bids.
• Owners will not be awarded players that exceed a $100 Auction Cap amount for their team.
• Ensure that all 12 player slots will have at least $1 minimum allocated for their salary.
• Questions and Comments should be addressed as soon as possible to ensure a fair and fluid Auction and League.

There has been an auction leagues in the basketball sim. The one I was in several years ago just consisted of a single season.

For this league can you only bid on one player per lot? For example if you bid $33 for Larry Bird and another owner bids $34. Since you didn't win anyone for that lot can you bid on two players in a following lot? For lot 10 if you are the first to bid $1 for a player is he yours no matter if a play bids $2 for that player later?

- you can bid on up to 12 players in any of the lots-
I would advise against bidding on more players than slots available on your roster.

In lot 10- and LOT 10 only-
I think an open forum would be best-

If another guy had $2 and he could top your bid - then he would get the player....

I suppose if LOT 10 ended and an owner still had roster slots open, then post(after) lot 10 - it would be first come first serve.

ok, I'll give it a go

Ties - I think it is a bad idea to break ties by timestamp. Starting the bidding at midnight is not fair to those who are working(or sleeping)(especially with some owners known to be in different time zones).
Throw all of the tied players back into Lot 9 or 10.  This way owners will need to save money for them when they come back out for bids again.

You mention 320 players - from what time period?, all the way back to 1951?,  just 2014?,  when?

to make it interesting - and somewhat general, maybe all time from 51 to most recent

Let's say Bird & Lebron are in the same lot. Let's say I have them ranked  #1 & #2 on my board. Let's say I bid $X on Lebron, can I Submit a bid for Bird with a memo that says, "If I win Lebron, cancel this bid"?

If T. Chandler, D Jordan, & R Gobert are in the same lot, I may REALLY want one of them, but I may REALLY not want to end up with 2 of them on my roster... So can I bid on all 3 and rank them in order of which one I want.. Like the Bird & Lebron example.. Can I say, "first priority is Chandler, if I lose him, next priority is Jordan, if I lose him, then my last option is Gobert"?

If I Really want one of those 3 guys, I may bid on all 3, just hoping to get one- then I might actually win all 3 & be stuck with 1 or 2 guys that don't fit in usage or minutes wise...

Shaq, Kareem,& Wilt would be a good example, Maybe even through in Artis Glimore & Admiral. Only Admiral is 95% or higher at PF, so they can only play Center. Plus, I imagine they will cost quite a bit of $$. You may REALLY want one of these guys. Lets say you spend $30 in Lot 1. You may be willing to spend more than half of your remaining amount to get one of these guys. Hypothetically if all of them showed up in round 2, you would be limited to only bidding on one of them ,if you aren't allowed to submit bids totaling more than $100. I think we should be able to allowed to submit multiple bids, and prioritize them. If I have $70 left, I may be willing to spend $40 to get Shaq or Kareem. Obviously with $70 left I can't afford to win them both, and I wouldn't want to anyway...

Maybe the best way to make it simple, is to make sure all of those guys are in separate lots. And other guys who are similar and only play 1 position, should be in separate lots. For example if there are 2 PGs who are very similar, and are below 95% at SG, they should be in separate lots. An owner may really want one, but they really want to avoid getting stuck with both... Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to clarify things.
