How many JUCOS are you recruiting on your 12 players roster?

Why?

I tend to stay away from JUCO, is it a mistake?

Yeah, it's a mistake to at least not consider them............They are particularly useful if  they are local and you can redshirt them....IQ is often the biggest drawback but the RS, some baseline knowledge, and/or high WE can overcome that.

Jon Bertch on my Redlands team is an example of a JUCO done right......it's rare for me but I did it this time!

The problem is that their skills are too tempting to enough coaches that you know you'll be in for a battle. "Hey, I can get a (100-pt higher overall than HS players) with core attributes good enough to play right now."  If you're ready for that battle, then go for it.

I also find they disrupt my class balance.  If you're already thrown off because of walk-ons or whatever, again, go for it.

i don't really target them because the really good ones are often so contested. in rebuilds i'll often take a decent potential juco with high WE or a guy who can be useful right away.

Definitely worth the look, especially when you've decided which JUCOs in your area produce kids that fit your system so that you can bring them in with functional IQs. I usually don't sign many, but that's usually because of class balance issues. If I see a clear upgrade over what I have in the rotation though, definitely worth it to pull the trigger.

I just had a weird situation where I signed the same kid twice. Got him last year as a freshman ineligible but he went JUCO. He happened to go to a JUCO close by so when recruiting came around i was able to send some scouting trips and decided he was still worth. So I signed him again. Unfortunate he only has 3 years instead of 4 now but of well I got my guy.

You would be crazy not to consider them.  With my PSU team, I signed Matt Brown from JuCo in OK (or NE).  With just a couple coach calls, I realized he was above avg in both my O & D.  That makes it a no-brainer, even at distance.

On the other hand, even with informing of redshirt, I've signed a few too many with my NCCU team recently.  It can be tough to develop them and work them in to your rotation (unless they already know both your O&D).

One sneaky benefit of an ineligible going JuCo is that their HSGPA will be adjusted in line with their JuCo GPA.  That can help.  Even better, you can still throw effort and inform of redshirt and get an additional year of development.  It can be risky, but if you're not battling, then I don't know why anyone wouldn't try it.

I think JUCOs are necessary. Some of my best teams ever had some JUCOs. I still think you have to restrict how many. To me, I like to have no more than 2 - 3 on any given team. The rest I like to build with freshmen talent. Some coaches never take JUCOs and win titles. So I'm sure it's just preference. For me, I find plugging in a JUCO or two occasionally when it doesnt disrupt class balances too much helps. I also don't think you can really rely on JUCOs too much their first year. So if its a two-year JUCO, you really only get 1 really good year out of them IMO. That's why I really don't see the point in Senior transfers. But I'm sure others have the opposite experience

Have to look at the jucos and consider them

- they are key when you have a gap in the roster because of a recruiting fail or EE
- they can be excellent contributors - I tend to look for guys who know our OFF and/or DEF which helps a lot
- sometimes they can be redshirted which can work out great
- but, as with just about any player, you need to know when to fight for them and when to walk away.

It depends where your team is and the quality of coaches around you. If you are in CA for example and not looking at jucos you're doing it wrong, but in many other places they are unnecessary. It is not necessary to recruit jucos to win constantly and anyone who tells you otherwise is flat out wrong, but in the right situations they can be valuable.

If I have 3 or more open schollies than I always try to get 1. Like everyone said, I only do it if they know my offense and def. I try to get high WE guys too.

So far, I only recruited two JUCOS. One was considering after a year where I recruited him (ineligible) and he did not report. The second was right as Terps and others mentioned, he knew my offense and defense. But it's rare... And, when you find the JUCO pearl, everybody is on him so I tend to shy away from these battles.

It felt like there was an obscene number of JUCOs in Knight this past session...not really complaining as I grabbed a decent Sophomore.

With JUCOs, you should also pay attention to what off/def they play/know because they'll have half the time to learn it if they don't know it.

I think that is the trick. To get the most value out of them, they have to already play your off and def.

I like getting jucos and transfers. It can help save in the future stars spending.
