When to trade a future 'max contract' player... Topic

If you have a 'max contract' type of player - a player that's going to get the max bonus, max salary over max years, player option, etc - and you can't sign or afford him, when is it best to trade him? What should be considered?

I've seen recent examples of owners attempting to trade these players before the final arbitration year, during the final arbitration year, and even after. It seems best to do so before the arbitration year, but I'd like to hear some thoughts on the matter...

Whenever you can get the best deal.  That's the short answer.  Depending on how competitive you are, you may want to hold out as long as you can, but if you're not winning a title even with the player, all that matters is when you can get the best return.

The flipside is you can always sign the player long-term before the 3rd arb and it won't be a max deal.

I'm not sure why you're in a rush to trade a guy like that.    You have 3 min salary, 2 arb and 5 LT years of that guy.   Why wouldn't you want 10 seasons of stud?  If he's that good, and your teams stinks, trade him in S9 of those 10.

This is one thing I'll never understand.   "I've got this really good player.  When should I trade him?"

Say this:  "My wife is super hot, will let me do anything in bed, cooks like a Top Chef, won't even ask me to wash a dish or hang up a shirt, cuts the grass, changes the oil in the cars and works so I can sit around and dedicate all my time to sim baseball on the internet.    Should I kick her to the curb and look for an upgrade?"

In HBD, someone would trade her for a 14-yo prospect

I believe that's legal in Georgia.  And West Virginia if it's a cousin.

Whoa - I'M not trading any-motherfuckingbody. Sadly, I don't really have any of those types of players right now. And I'd probably go all out to sign one.

I witnessed ANOTHER owner that was doing it in one league and another owner who did it earlier in another league. Both had different situations. So I was curious as to what people thought.

Well bripat42, maybe you ate something spicy and it gave 'your friend' a burning sensation. I'm sure it happens. Especially to 'curious' people like yourself.

Regardless of who is doing it, it still makes no sense to trade him before you have 8-9 seasons from him.

Or, y'know, if you're dealing with competent owners who are going to give you less in return for him for each fewer season he has until he hits free agency.

If you trade him before his last season, you can honestly answer "I don't know if he'll re-sign".     If you think you're getting a comparable, younger player in return, you're not.

I signed a 28 year old max contract guy in a world I just joined, but was then offered 3 good prospects (the franchise I took over had no prospects whatsoever, and was riddled with poor decisions) so I sent him packing. Was that shady? I never sign and trade guys on MLB The Show or Madden out of principle, but in this case it really benefited my team and in the end only cost me a signing bonus.

When you signed and traded, was that something you sought out or did te offer come your way?

Maybe.   Was it done at the other owner's request to protect his draft pick?
