I'm not a computer guy, but if tiny screen users are the reason for this change, how about giving medium and big screen users (which I'd guess is still the majority of us) the option of keeping the old look?
That's the way it began, when it came to adding tiny smart phone screens to the mix. Just give them their own version of the WWW. IMHO, that's the way it should have stayed. We all want bigger and more pixels, not less. Most of us want to have big screens with multiple windows on them, truly like a desktop messy enough to get good work done.
I think in
the future (must be said like Dr. Emmett Brown and may the Cubs win the World Series) such division of presentations between hand-held and desktop (and wall hung and floor-standing and ceiling hanging) will once again occur. This period will be seen a hiccup, one of those that causes pain in the trachea.
