3pt Shooting Rant Topic

This has happened too many times that I need to rant about it.

They need to fix late game shooting decisions ASAP. I'm down by 3 in the Elite 8 with 20 seconds to go and this guy takes a 3 to tie it with 5 seconds left on the clock.

Why in the hell would I ever in a billion years want my center with a perimeter rating of 10 take a 3 pointer with the game on the line?? It makes no sense why this happens. Do they just randomly pick someone to shoot? I'm sure this has happened to A LOT of you so I know others have horror stories too.

So, why not change it? Yes, I know, changes are far and few in between. And I get the stuff about changing firing logic, recruit generation, etc but this is something that is directly affecting the outcomes of games, right? I probably still would have lost this game since I don't have any great 3 point shooters on that team but others might.

Anyway, for the love of god, add in some settings where we choose who is going to take late 3 pointers with the game on the line.

i think that only happens when you have everyone set to minus2,
still .....i agree it should pick one of the gaurds or take the three best PE guys and pick one of them.

it looks like you only took 75 3s for the yr (33 games) so the definitely explains what Oldave is saying.  To me u had a 3 guys that coulda atleast been -1 which might've put them into a position to shoot the 3

Yeah I have Bustos at -1 but he was on the bench end of game.

Seward was a beast getting to line so wanted to keep him pounding it in the paint and not shooting 3s. But you think Dixon with 55 per should have been set to -1 all season?

with awesome spd and good BH I could see him being a decent 3pt shooter just by getting open looks

My personal opinion here but I think "a lot" of coaches are too conservative with their three point settings.  My teams rarely shoot a ton of them, and in fact, I probably don't shoot as many as I really should either but mostly because I'm trying to get the other team into foul trouble.  I don't have a problem in the world with a guard who has a perimeter rating of 50-55 being set to 0 on the three point settings.  Depending on the make-up of the rest of my team, I may even have guys with ratings lower than that set at 0 for their three setting.

Of course, I've also choked away so many FF and NC games that I'm probably doing more damage than good thinking like that, so take every bit of the above with a huge grain of sodium chloride.

Hmm good to know guys. Might have to give those guys some more looks next season.

But what are we going to do about late game settings???  No more big man 3s!!

Well in real life kids panic and make really awful late game decisions. This is just another example of a boneheaded play by your guy. Tough luck but it totally happens.

Yeah players panic in real life, for sure. But 99% you put the ball in your stars hands and see what he can do. Sometimes he pulls a Kemba Walker and hits the game winner. Sometimes he pulls a Jerian Grant and takes a terrible fadeaway 3 pointer from the corner with a guy in his face. But in the end, those are the guys you want taking the shot. Or at least one of your secondary or tertiary scorers.

I have another example that's much worse but my team stinks so I wasn't really upset about it. It was more like a "what the heck is going on here"

For some reason, this guy, with a PER rating of 1 (ONE!) decided to take FOUR 3 pointers in the last 45 seconds of the game. And by some insane reason, he made of them haha.

Yeah coaches are way too conservative with the three point shot, myself included. If you look at sim teams you'll see a lot of guys you would have on minus 2 shooting decent percentages, especially bigs.
It's debatable whether it's better to forgo the 3 and take more inside shots to try and get the other team in foul trouble though and I can see both sides to the argument.

It is also possible that the big was the only guy open to take a shot.  The defense is going to try to clamp down anyone who can shoot a 3.  If that leaves the C wide open then more often than not, he will get the shot, right? (IRL too, not just in this game)

I mean, sure you might want Michael Jordan taking the shot to win a college big game, but some times it Christian Laettner from the outside as well.

Laettner shot 48% for his career from the 3pt line

Happened again so I'll rant again.

Down 3 in the Elite 8 with 26 seconds to go.

I don't have my best 3 point shooter on the floor and none of the rest of my guys are great shooters but why does my PF with a 19 PER take the game tying shot??

I won't even get into the fact that we should be able to sub in our 3 point shooters during a time out. Just let me choose who gets to take the shot from those on the floor at that time (or at least a progression of players).

Also - he was playing man 2 man -5. So no, my guards weren't being swarmed by the defense leaving this guy the only one open and capable of taking the shot.

Probably because: 1. Everyone was set at -2, and your 19 PER PF was covered by a poor defender..........if you want to avoid this, set some players at -1.......

I know. I get why the engine chose (seemingly) at random because everyone on the court was at -2. Harris is +1 but he was on the bench.

I don't agree that Curry was covered by a poor defender. No offense to Sillypig but his team is full of average defenders. All guys on the court were between 30-40 DEF. And he was at -5 defense. So it makes no sense to me that with 26 seconds left on the clock, the only look I could get would be from my PF. Who should not be behind the 3 pt line and should down low ready to get rebound should someone miss this last second shot!

Yes, I could set all my guards to -1. But I don't think I should have to. Just have a setting where if a last minute 3 is required, I can choose a few guys who I'd like to have take the shot. Even if they were guarded, I'd prefer them over my bigs.
