Optimize Practice Plan - horrible Topic

If you are a new player, do not rely on the optimize practice plan button. It is terrible and definitely should be addressed. I just tried it with my Ouachita Baptist team at the end of the year. It gave every player, even seniors 7 to 9 minutes of study hall. If you have an ineligible, it will give him a few minutes in study hall and the rest over categories, which he can't practice - all his minutes should be in SH. I had a player with 1 LP and orange on that, and he practiced 4 minutes at that while only practicing 14 on a green PE rating that was much higher. Hopefully they will fix this logic at least a bit.

It shouldn't actually be "optimal". But it should be passable. It's not.

Agreed. The person who wrote that piece of the program has no understanding of the game at all.

Note to owners new to 3.0:
a change to the Practice Plan page includes 1 "Save" button. In the past you had to save Off-Def training with its own Save button. Player training had a second Save button that acted independently.

Anyway, if you intend on changing Off-Def, i would recommend first adjusting each player's minutes accordingly, then adjust O-D minutes. If you changes O-D first, then 3.0 will automatically pop player numbers up or down to balance it at 180 total minutes... but the auto adjustments suck as badly as the "Optimize" adjustments.

Not sure if i'm being too confusing...

basically, yesterday i wanted to decrease my Off and Def training minutes by 5 minutes each... but before touching O and D, i increased each player's individual minutes by 10 minutes each in the categories of my choosing... temporarily, each player's total numbers were in Red because i exceeded the 180 total... but then i adjusted my O and D down, getting it to 180, then did one giant Save click.

It uses the position of a player and not the position role rating (which is not perfect but better). Hughes Jr actually has a so-so program for the starting lineup based upon role rating which he might be willing to lend.

If you don't like the Optimization of Practice PLans, just turn it off!

On your main team page, go to Office, User settings. There are several useful choices you can make there.

That's not really the point Spud.

The issue with the optimization is that a user will use it once assuming it actually works and then either make incorrect assumptions about how practice minutes function or have to literally re-do each player's minutes to undo the flaws of what should be a time-saving option.

Thanks, fellas, I guess I'm talking to the smarter users. Even if they use Optimization and have to re-do it, they'll benefit from knowing it can be turned off.

cubcub is correct here.

IF you want to use the Depth Chart optimization, you FIRST need to set your player positions to be where you want guys to generally play (PG, SG, SF, PF, C .. player position actually matters).

THEN you need to make sure you have good numbers set for player roles and that you have picked your adjusted player roles to be the default on the user settings page..

THEN if you use the optimize button it does give you at least a usable line-up.

cubcub is also correct that I have a player spreadsheet that I switched from Excel or OpenOffice to Google Sheets to look at your team vs. an opponent that has a recommend depth chart. It is based on a sheet some people may have by Andy Berman (WIS UserID: bermanap). Andy no longer plays HD.

The way to set up this sheet is to go to the TeamCompare Sheet and input your Team ID into Cell B1. You then use Cells A6:A17 (yellow) to list all your players as pg1, pg2, sg1, sg2, sf1, sf2, pf1, pf2, c1, c2, bn1, bn2.

Same setup for your opponents team in the OppCompare sheet. You can use a recent play-by-play to set this for an opponent.

If you then go to the Matchup sheet, you will see some info about both teams and some suggested settings for the matchup between the teams.

There is also a Depth Chart sheet that shows a recommended depth chart, a Starters sheet that shows an overview of the team (you need to set Off Set and Def Set at the top of the Starters sheet page to use the Depth Chart Sheet correctly) .. and you can make adjustments to the various ratings on the Ranking Factors page. Worksheet2 is just somewhere to play.

This sheet has been adjusted to work with HD3. It is for day to day operations of a team, NOT recruiting.

You can get the latest version of my sheet here: HD3-Team-Worksheet-001 (you will have to make a copy and use it in your Google Sheets).

I am not saying the factors in Ranking Factors are accurate or this sheet is better or worse than anything anyone else is doing. This is just what I use to analyse teams and help me play. I am willing to discuss it or even make changes if people want to discuss, etc.

Note: This work is based on an original spreadsheet created by Andy Berman (WIS UserID: bermanap). Andy has been nice enough to allow me to use his work as the basis for my spreadsheet and to distribute it to anyone who wants it. Special thanks go out to Andy and if you like the spreadsheet you can donate to his paypal account “bermanap AT yahoo.com”. (No idea if that paypal still works or not.)
