IBA's Dice Roll Invitational Topic

With my disinterest with the new scouting/recruiting that has been implemented; I wanted to create an invitational to hopefully spark some interest back into the game and D-3.

Starting tomorrow 5 teams will be in contention for the initial invitational championship. Between the 5 coaches we have 28 national championships and over 10,000 career wins.

The teams that will be competing:

#2 LeTourneau - dgraves
#4 Linfield - QB4USF
#8 Elmira - shaf5576
Chestnut Hill - Benis
Marietta - whitechoco

In the opening day we have last years Elite 8 participant the Chestnut Hill Knights hosting the #4 team in the land the Linfield Wildcats. The early spread has the Wildcats as 22 point favorites.

In the second game of the double header we have 2 sweet 16 participants going head-to-head as the #8 Elmira Soaring Eagles take on the Marietta Pioneers. The Eagles come in as 12 point favorites, but have not had much luck in the past against the Pioneers as shaf isjust 5-11 all time verse whitechoco.

3. LeTourneau - dgravs

Preview

Linfield - Coming off a disappointing 1st round exit, Linfield returns all 12 players and comes into the season ranked #4. Linfield is led by 3rd team preseason All American PG Chuck "White Out" Blizzard and honorable mention PF Manuel Gresham

LeTourneau - Returning all 12 players from a team that lost in the National Championship, LeTourneau's expectations are sky high and comes into the season ranked #2. LeTourneau is led by 1st team preseason All American Jon Salvatore and 2nd team All American Charles Malloy.

Elmira - Elmira is brings a young team into the Invitational this season with only 4 upperclassmen but is ranked #8 and is coming off a S16 run. Elmira is also only two seasons removed from a National Championship. Elmira is led by 3rd team preseason All American "Super" Mario Rutledge.

Chestnut Hill - Sporting the youngest team in the Invitational with zero seniors and 6 freshmen, Chestnut Hill is the dark horse of the field. Coming off an Elite 8 run last season, there is very little love coming from the media as they are unranked as the season begins and have no players named to the preseason awards list.

Marietta - Marietta returns 7 players from a S16 run last season but that includes only 2 upperclassmen. Like CHC, Marietta was snubbed by the media pollsters and comes into the season unranked and without any players named to preseason awards list.

This is great guys. Super fun. Don't expect much from Marietta this year (snubs probably deserved) but if you keep it going, I'd love to be in the mix in the future too. Good luck to everyone. It's a great field.

#4 Linfield Wildcats defeats Chestnut Hill Knights (-22): 73-61
- In a game where the box score shows a very tightly contested game; the difference comes from the turnover battle. The Wildcats were able to hold the Knights to only 6 assists while creating 20 turnovers. The Wildcats had 17 assists and turned the ball over 14 times. Morris Sears of the Knights led all scorers with 13 points on 4 of 7 shooting.

Play(s) of the game: With the game at 10 points and Chestnut Hill looking to make a push Clinton Sarris has a series of plays to seal the game. With 6:30 left in the second half Sarris takes a behind the back pass from Charles Blizzard and hits the shot. During the inbound play Sarris steals the ball and hits the easy lay-up. In 6 seconds of play Sarris had 4 points and 1 steal to create a 14 point lead and seal the win for the Wildcats.

Player of the game: Clinton Sarris (SO.) 8 Pts, 1 Reb, 5 Ast, 0 TO and 3 Stl.

#8 Elmira Soaring Eagles defeat Marrieta Pioneers (-12): 79-60
- The second game was never in doubt as the Soaring Eagles took a massive first half lead and never looked back. With the Eagles shooting 50% from three and holding the Pioneers to a measly 20%, but once again the team with a positive assist-turnover ratio was the victor. Nicolas Nance of the Eagles was the leading scorer with 16 points.

Play of the game: With Marietta up 16-14 early on in the game Thomas Martinelli (Elmira) steps into a 3 and misses badly by barely grazing the rim. During the shot Mark Abels (Marietta) goes for the game changing block, but instead slaps Martinelli in the arm. Martinelli goes to the line and hits all 3 free throws giving the Eagles a 17-16 lead, a lead that never changes hands again.

Player of the game: Nicolas Nance (Sr.) 16 Pt, 1 Reb and 3 Stl.

Fun, I remember when I used to run the Le Moyne Invitational back in the day in Rupp. Good Times.Long lost in the abyss of the old forums though.

The second day brings an couple of exciting match ups beginning with the Marietta Pioneers (0-1) hosting the Chestnut Hill Knights (0-1). Both teams are looking to save their invitational hopes as an 0-2 start would all but eliminate the loser. As the Morris Sears led Knights will look to rebound and hold off Norman Simmons and the Pioneers. The opening spread has the Chestnut Hill Knights as 1 point favorites.

Norman Simmons (Marietta) coming into the day is ranked 2nd in Rebounds and is tied for 1st in Blocked Shots.

Morris Sears (Chestnut Hill) coming into the day is ranked 2nd in Points.

In our second game we have the preseason favorite and the #1 team in the land the LeTourneau Yellow Jackets (0-0) is on the road to visit the #4 team in the country the Linfield Wildcats (1-0). The winner of the game would put themselves in great position to take the tournament. The home Yellow Jackets are 2 point favorites heading into this match up. dgraves (LeTourneau) is 0-1 vs qb4usf (Linfield)

Clinton Sarris (Linfield) coming into the day is ranked 1st in both Assists and Steals.

This is a really cool idea. Great write-ups on the teams, the previews, and the daily action. Just curious, how did you guys handle the logistics of getting this coordinated amongst coaches and scheduling the games in your world?

In a game that can only be described as a display in offensive futility, Marietta beat Chestnut Hill 51-49.

CHC had a 4 point lead heading into the final minute but was shut out the rest of the way by Marietta. The game was decided on an old fashioned 3 pointer by George Pratt to give Marietta a 1 point lead with 12 seconds to go. In other unrelated news, Michael Morris has been kicked off the CHC team. Coach Benis said this was due to 'disciplinary issues".

Key Stat: CHC shot a robust 30% from the field while Marietta was slightly better with a scalding 40.5%.

The difference of the game came down to rebounding where Marietta pounded Chestnut Hill on the boards 41-28.

Player of the Game - George "Stop Calling me Chris" Pratt. 14 pts, 6 reb, 2 blocks in 25min

It was qb4usf's idea. He just sitemailed us and asked if we all wanted to schedule games the following season. It was actually really easy, just a few messages back and forth. He set up the matchups and sent them out and we scheduled them.

#1 LeTourneau Yellow Jackets (1-0) defeats #4 Linfield Wildcats (1-1) (-2): 74-61
- The Yellow Jackets were never worried about this one as the handled the Wildcats who played more like kitty cats. The preseason favorite to win it all took the lead early and never looked back. For the third time the game was easily it was easy to distinguish the winner by looking at the Ast/TO battle.

Play(s) of the game: Right before halftime; the Yellow Jackets, holding onto a 5 point lead, set up "computer blue" getting the ball into Gregory Burkes hands and he took control hitting a fadeaway jumper while getting fouled. After hitting the free throw the Wildcats tried to get back into the game a scored a bucket, but not to be outdone the Jon Salvatore comes down and nails a 3 increasing the lead to 9.

Player of the game: Charles Malloy (Sr.) 14 Pts on 6-10 shooting and 5 Reb

#12 Linfield Wildcats (2-1) defeats #3 Elmira Soaring Eagles (1-1) (-4): 78-72
- In a game where the Soaring Eagles dominated the boards, it turned out to be the turnover battle (once again) to prove to be the difference in the game. Nicolas Nance (Elmira) had a tourney high 20 points in the game, but was not enough to hold off the Wildcats. This was a big game for Linfield as a loss would have knocked them out of contention for the championship. Elmira now needs to win out, which includes a very tough game against LeTourneau in the near future, to still have a chance.

Play(s) of the game: After pulling to within 2 points with under 2 minutes to go; Linfield goes 1-2 from the line to increase the lead to 3. The Soaring Eagles were looking for a big bucket to possibly tie the game. The Eagles inbound the ball and are swarmed by the Wildcat press. Right when Alan Williams gets passed half court, the gets double teamed and gets hit with a backcourt violation. This allowed the Wildcats to take the ball back and essentially put the game away.

Player of the game: Charles Blizzard (Sr.) 14 Points 1 Rebounds 3 Assists and 2 Steals

#1 LeTourneau Yellow Jackets (2-0) defeats Chestnut Hill Griffins (0-3) (+47): 80-51
- In an expected lopsided affair the young guns from Chestnut Hill gave everything they had to pull off the upset, but the experienced Yellow Jackets took over in the second half. This game was a tale of 2 halves. Benis must have given the Griffins an amazing speech prior to the game as his guys hung tough in the first half only down 4 (37-33). The adrenaline wore off and the Yellow jackets took complete control in the second half outscoring the Griffins 43-18. Chestnut Hill will play one more tournament game in hopes to avoid a winless run. On the other side LeTourneau will look to continue their dominance in tourney play.

Play(s) of the game: Right after halftime the LeTourneau Yellow Jackets come out and start the route. With the game still in hand coming out of the locker room; the Yellow Jackets had a 23-5 run in the first 7 minutes. This run made the game out of hand and sealed another big win for the #1 team in the land.

Player of the game: Howard Scott (Sr.) 11 Points 2 Rebounds 1 Assist and 3 Steals
