But recruits only rate us "good" on defense. How does one manage to be "very good"?

Probably running a fullcourt press where you can create more turnovers and playing in a weaker conference. It's hard to do if you have the 16th strongest schedule.

Where do you rank in defensive field goal percentage? I think defensive FG percentage is a greater factor when it comes to recruiting than PPG. PPG has too many factors outside of defense like tempo

A few seasons back I was bouncing between 3rd and 15th in the nation in PPG and I was bouncing between good and neutral in defense. My defensive FG percentage was not very good thanks to a tough OOC schedule. I didn't solidify my good defense rating until I started playing weaker teams in my conference schedule. I feel confident in saying that scheduling a tough OOC schedule hurts your recruiting chances with recruits that desire good defenses and its my opinion the sim does not take into consideration strength of opponents.

1 last thing. Its very tough to get a very good rating for defensive recruiting. I think very few teams get it.

They need to sticky this topic. I think it's the most frequently asked question about preferences in 3.0

It's based upon points per possession. You need to get under 80 points per 100 possessions allowed to get very good. It definitely is hard to get but not impossible. My chestnut team is at VG now for Defense.

I've actually had VG twice. Season 96 and 97. Just under 80 both times:

It's almost impossible to do with a good schedule - usually just a handful of elite defensive teams with middling to weak schedules are able to do it. Those who are able to get it with tough schedules have truly exceptional defenses.

Here's how you compute your Defensive PPP (Points per Possession):

Look at your Total (not Average) Team Stats and punch in the Opponent #s into the following formula:

Opponent Total Points Scored
_______________________________

OFGA + 0.44 x OFTA - OREB + OTO

OFGA = Opponent Total FG Attempts
OFTA = Opponent Total FT Attempts
OREB = Opponent Total Offensive Rebounds
OTO = Opponent Total Turnovers

That's a divide by the way in the formula.

That will give you a percentage if you multiply by 100 will be how efficient your defense is which is what seble is using for scoring the Wants Defense preference.

Right now, with some sitemails from Benis as well, I've gotten the range for Very Good as high as 80.5% and scored a Good for as low as 84.3% (so somewhere in between there is the threshold). I've been recording info since 3.0 was released but don't have any data on the lower end of the defensive spectrum (my team is never that bad....).

The preference score is updated after every game you play so if you score something in between that range, let me know what your preference is and I'll add that data point into my spreadsheet.

gdog is right though that teams like mine which consistently play hard schedules (over half my games are versus Top 25 opponents every season), we can almost never get to Very Good since the metric never takes into consideration difficulty of your opponent (playing cupcakes all season is the way to go to get a VG score for Defense).

The OP score was 89.87 so about the midpoint in the Good range...

I don't like to brag...but I will anyway.

My CNU team got 80.0 on the nose for VG defense season 99(1st season in 3.0) in Phelan. Was in a stud conference and had #5 SOS. Pretty damn good team.

Not as impressive nowadays with 3.0 mega teams.

Can you add the ( ) where they belong in that formula to make it accurate please?
Or does it not matter here?

(A divided by (B + ((0.44 x C) - D) + E)) * 100 = Defensive PPP percentage

A = Opponent Total Points
B = Opponent Total Field Goal Attempts
C = Opponent Total Free Throw Attempts
D = Opponent Total Offensive Rebounds
E = Opponent Total Turnovers

Looks like I've gotten VG for Strong Defense twice for Chestnut.

Season 89 was 77 points per 100 poss. SOS was 20.
Season 92 was 79 points per 100 poss. SOS was 11

But yeah, it's pretty difficult to get if you have a decent schedule.

Not to be nit picky (but I'm super anal like that) but it's actually not a percentage. Multiplying by 100 just turns it from points per 1 possession to points per 100 possessions.

Yeah but since most people don't know what PPP really means (at least the non-stat geeks), I wanted to turn it into something most people could relate to.

Fair point.

Btw, I wish they did adjust for opponent like Kenpom does. Maybe one day... ha

Yeah I have a cake non-con and at 25-0 can only get down to 0.88 PPP
