this may give away a little more than i want to but being at D+ Ohio State and a 5 star is 90 miles from me with the only preference being "Man to man" which i have as Very Good. Would it be worth going after? It is easy for me to go all in and offer the entire boat to him.

I say go for it. Offer him the boat and see if you can get to high on him. If you can, it is worth staying in for the dice roll. But if offering him everything doesn't really move the needle, move on quickly.

You can dip your toe in with APs, but if an A+ school wants him, you are just wasting recruiting dollars with HVs/CVs.
IMO

If he's a legit 5 star located in the heart of B10 country then you'll probably get lots of competition from the big dogs. M2M is the most common defense in D1 so most people will match up with you equally on preferences.

Net - you can be a thorn in the side of some of the high prestige schools but you're unlikely to get in the dice roll if others are battling for me.

My advice - look for guys that maybe a little bit worse (3 star or unranked) but may have a high prestige school on them all alone. The high prestige may be trying to get that guy for barely anything while using their budget to battle for the 5 stars. Could be ripe for the picking.

Thanks everyone, its different being the big6 school with a low prestige that cant fight for the local guy.

I wouldn't go in that direction to be honest. Your odds are about 0.1% of landing him. Not worth wasting the resources.

5 star recruits never get ignored by A prestige schools. And even if they did, a B school would most likely end up getting him.

I got a stud (100 Ath De REB SB, 90 LP, 85 sta) 5* recruit as a C+ prestige, only offering 4 HVs, a start, and 100 APs.

What did you have for preferences? Even at C+ I would be quite hesitant.

I think if he does not tick at 80 ap from the start, then it's a waste of time, and to be honest, he will be dropped to moderate by a teams.

Lmao. Disclaimer there were 0 humans of C+ or higher in Cali at that time. Stanford sim, SC sim, UCLA sim, Cal rebuild, mid-majors all bad except B+ sim Santa Barbara. I had Neutral for wants success, Very Good for wants to play and Bad for wants paint offense. That's all I have in my speeadhseet but I feel I missed 1.

Well in my experience so far if you do it right you can fight for almost anyone. When I was at Texas Christian building that program I landed 2 top 100 recruits at C Prestige and one of them was the #13 or 11th rated guard? The other was low 20's for ranking. If you choose your battles right you should have a shot on most recruits. I lucked out that both of them "wanted rebuild" and were within 400 miles so I jumped on them and saw no opposition.

if its a "wants rebuild" player that is a completely different situation. If they don't have that preference I think you would have real tough time even getting to "High" on a 5-star if the A-schools on the player are putting in a reasonable amount of effort.

When it comes to a discussion on battling for recruits, you'll only hear from one or two coaches about how they were able to land a 5 star player with a C+ and below prestige. What you won't hear are all of the coaches that failed in that same attempt. Some quit the game in frustration. I watched everything that was going on in battles when I was at Wake Forest. It's often a failed strategy. Yeah great, you landed that 5 star recruit with 40% signing odds, that's still only 1/10th of your team. Now what happens if another team battles for your second and third recruits, then you're screwed.

Cub's situation is a bit different, considering there weren't really any schools within California with a higher prestige.

In Phelan, Southern Miss ended up getting the #1 recruit with a D+ prestige with approximately 33% signing odds. Problem is his other 2 recruits aren't that strong, one of the recruits he needed to fend off a D-2 team at VH. Also, he hasn't had higher than a 150 RPI in his 4 seasons as head coach of that team, so you can see where the strategy has failed so far.
