Redshirting a JUCO Topic

I know to redshirt a JUCO, you need to inform them during recruiting. I have also had my school disappear from a player’s considering list after informing.

How can I offset the negative effects of informing a player of redshirt so that I can still recruit the JUCO?

Offer them a scholarship first & put a lot of AP in them to negate the reduction that comes with informing of a scholarship.

I don’t have a ton of AP to spare right now, would hitting him with a few HVs do the job instead?

I have redshirted a juco jr without informing him during recruiting but it is hit and miss.

As a general rule, I only inform of a redshirt if I don’t want the player on the team unless he redshirts. I don’t know of anything you can do to negate the hit for a player that’s going to drop you off the considering list. If he wants to play, you can forget it, from what I’ve seen. I don’t recall ever specifically informing a juco of a redshirt when he didn’t have “wants to play” preference, so that may be possible.

Sorry, this confused me. Are you saying that all JUCOs have the “wants to play” preference? And that you have redshirted JUCOs with this preference before?

Starting with the premise that jucos are harder to redshirt - I don’t know if that’s true or not, but that’s the premise being discussed here - I’m saying the ones that do have the playing preference have all rejected my redshirt attempts, during and after recruiting. Plenty of them don’t have a playing preference, though, and I don’t recall specifically trying to inform that kind of player - a juco with no playing preference - of a redshirt.

Okay, thanks for clarifying. The guy I am going for has the wants to play preference, so maybe he won’t accept my redshirt. I’ll try to counteract it with a couple HVs and a CV. If I drop off his considering list, I think I can remove the “inform of redshirt” and get back on. Anyways, I am the only one on this guy so far. I’ll update this thread after the fact.

A lot of people have found that removing the inform of redshirt still results in the player not listening to you anymore. So if he flips out, don’t plan on being able to get him back.

Yeah, I’ve heard that too. Maybe I’ll still be able to get him, but he isn’t that important to me. If I get him with a redshirt, it’s gravy. If not, I’ll still take him without the shirt, but I won’t want him as bad.

Has anyone had success informing of redshirt prior to offering a scholly?

yes - it depends on the strength of your team's prestige and the kid's aspirations - a kid who is thrilled to hear from you, may take it - a kid who is a reach wont

Low prestige, but good preferences and I’m the only one after him.

Update: I have offered him a scholly and put 1 CV and 6 HVs into him. Signings don’t start until the 29th, so I’m stockpiling APs into him for now. He will likely be over 350 APs by the time signings come around. I will inform him of redshirt the cycle before signings start (he has early signing preference). Hopefully this works out.

Be prepared to have the door slammed in your face. It happens often. Even with lots of effort. And i'm not sure your current recruiting situation, but don't go into that cycle where you decide to offer the redshirt thinking that you've stockpiled AP. 350 isn't really that much. It's not a horrible number. But it's not big enough to be a significant factor. 350 AP is an average of like 25 per cycle. Coaches put way more AP into players that they really want, when able.
