The important thing to remember is that the D1 school doesn’t have to get ahead to have a 100% chance to sign the recruit. It only has to just barely sneak into signing range. So the answer to this question is that x is quite a bit lower than it would be if we’re talking about a D1 having a 100% chance to sign a late recruit in this scenario, in which the D1 would have to knock the all in D2 to moderate, which depending on their prestige may not even be possible.
I don’t know what the answer is, which kind of depends on what the preferences actually are. Pragmatically, if I’m the D1 school, I offer the scholarship, promise 15 minutes, do a CV, and see where I’m at. Then if still at moderate or lower, start doing a HV or two at a time. Since these two teams are fairly close in prestige, and we’re assuming neutral preferences, I’d guess it’d be something more than 5, but probably not a lot more.
