Good Bad Ugly - Roster Selection Thread Topic

Before I started, I knew I was going to take at least two super expensive overpriced studs, so I could make the minimum salary and stick this team with terrible players everywhere else. So welcome '95 Maddux and '04 Bonds. I thought about '80 Brett, but his defense is too good. Bonds is a B-/D+, which is the best defensive player on the roster. I also added '03 Gagne and '09 M.Adams. That's $56 million on 4 players. Had to throw in 58 PA of pinch hitter '06 Jeff Baker ($1.7M) to make salary.

My main strategy of this theme was to make the bad team have as bad a defense as possible, while still sticking them with bad pitching and bad hitting. So a lot of my searches started with this premise. I began with the middle infield.

'61 Harvey Kuenn is the team's only SS. His D-/D- fielding reflects a fielding percentage of .817. His 557 PA isn't terrible offensively, but isn't good either (.265 / .329 / .361). I added a nice pinch hitting '52 Kuenn to my good team (.325 avg, C/A defense).

'83 Dave Stapleton is the team's starting 2B. His D-/D- fielding reflects a fielding percentage of .840. His 598 PA is pretty anemic (.247 / .297 / .363). Spent 200K on '85 Stapleton as a scrub for my good team.

'92 George Brett might be one of the better hitters on the team (.285 / .330 / .397) but his defense at 3B is atrocious. The D-/D- rating represents an .845 fielding percentage. Most of Brett's good seasons are overpriced, but I grabbed a reasonably priced '76 season for my good team (.333 / .377 / .462, C/A fielding).

At catcher, I wanted lots of errors and passed balls and a terrible throwing arm. Welcome '04 Craig Wilson (D-/D-/D-). He will provide some pop and will finish second on the team in HRs (.264 / .354 / .499). I used a 252K version of Wilson for my good team.

I still need a catcher, a second baseman and a shortstop for my good team, without providing defensive help for my bad team. '98 Jose Offerman (709 PA, .315 / .403 / .438) will be my leadoff hitter. His '04 season has 202 PA of D-/D- fielding at 2B although his offense is ok (.256 / .363 / .395). He also qualifies for 1B (D/D).

Longtime favorite '06 Carlos Guillen (.320 / .400 / .519) will be my good team's SS. The bad team will add '09 Guillen (.242 / .339 / .419) and he only plays 1B and OF, although his C/D+ fielding is one of the better numbers on the team.

My good team's catcher will be '03 Jorge Posada (.281 / .405 / .518). Amazingly, his '11 season consists of .235 / .315 / .398 stats and he plays three positions, none well... catcher (D-/D-/D-), firstbase (D/D) and second base (D-/D-). Never knew Posada played 2B.

I knew my choices at OF were plentiful so I focused on building my good team from here. Love me some '73 Ken Singleton (.302 / .425 / .479) while sticking the bad team with '82 Singleton (.251 / .349 / .381, D-/D-, .898 fielding).

My good team welcomes '41 Roy Cullenbine (.317 / .452 / .465). Cullenbine doesn't really have any terrible full seasons, so I stuck the bad team with '40 Cullenbine for 399K (.180 / .405 / .246).

Since I added '04 Bonds ($22M) to my bad team, I needed to roster a Bonds on my good team. '96 Bonds (675 PA, .308 / .461 / .615) is my most expensive hitter.

My starting 1B on my good team is the ever popular defensive whiz, '56 Wally Moon (.298 / .390 / .469). His other version, '63 Moon (398 PA, .262 / .345 / .382) only plays OF, and plays it poorly (D/D-).

I still needed some OF plate appearances on the bad team and needed to spend some more salary, so here comes '85 Mike Easler (631 PA, .262 / .325 / .412). Of course, he is a D-/D-. Posada and Offerman can satisfy the PA requirement at 1B for the bad team. My good team gets some extra OF plate appearances for 341K with '79 Easler (.278 / .371 / .444)

One last thing. Besides adding super-PH Jeff Baker to my bad team for salary reasons, I needed some backup PA at catcher for my good team (Posada only has 588, so I added George Williams (106 PA, .291 / .383 / .494). His bad version is '96 and although he's the best defensive catcher on this team (C/D/D), he only has 166 PA of terirble offense (.152 / .311 / .258).

Excluding the scrubs, my good team's offense is 5504 PA, .310 / .413 / .492 (including 5 switch hitters).
My bad team's hitting stats: 5965 PA, .264 / .363 / .432 (avg defense D-/D-)

Pitchers

Basically focused on my good team's starting pitching first, rostering long time favorites, '72 G.Perry, '36 Hubbell, '96 Maddux and 16 R.Hill as my SP. The bullpen was more about screwing the bad team. So my relievers include ' 46 Ruffing, '65 R.Roberts, '92 Rasmussen, '48 N.Potter, '76 D.Martinez, along with the '99 Gagne, '11 M.Adams. Overall, that's 1406 IP, 1.00 whip, 0.34 hr/9, for $50.2 million.

The bad team's pitching (besides Maddux, Gagne & Adams)
'29 Red Ruffing 258 ip, 1.63 whip, 0.63 hr/9
'39 Nels Potter 210 ip, 1.76 whip, 1.19 hr/9
'83 Gaylord Perry 187 ip, 1.41 whip, 1.16 hr/9
'83 Dennis Martinez 153 ip, 1.66 whip, 1.24 hr/9
'61 R.Roberts 124 ip, 1.51 whip, 1.46 hr/9
'43 Carl Hubbell 70 ip, 1.68 whip, 0.95 hr/9
'09 Rich Hill 58 ip, 1.87 whip, 1.09 hr/9
'88 Dennis Rasmussen 57 ip, 1.60 whip, 1.28 hr/9

Pitching totals (all pitchers): 1473 ip, 1.42 whip, 0.90 hr/9 (49.7 million)

If he pitches against only bad teams, Maddux should win almost every game. This team's offense is probably better than most bad teams' offense, but they will give up runs. I could see Maddux/Gagne/Adams pitching a lot of games together (Maddux 6-7 ip, Gagne 1-2 ip, Adams 0-1 ip)

I actually didn’t work on too many iterations of this. I decided to start with my bad team and leave myself some good options for the other roster. I had a few strategies in my mind and worked from there.

I had two initial thoughts for my bad team:
  1. Find a couple of overpriced studs who would offer minimal benefit. I didn’t want to offer Neb any impact players if I could help it. I went with ’03 Eric Gagne, whom I suspect is on many bad rosters, and ’53 Ted Williams.
  2. I wanted to minimize offense, especially slugging, as much as possible, so I decided to waste money on good defense. I managed to put together a horrid offensive team, but I was still $10M short of the cap. And I was giving Neb a really good defense to work with, which would benefit his pitching staff.

I had ’72 Aurilio Rodriguez on the team, with his A/A+ defense at 3B and his D-/D- defense at SS and it finally dawned on me: waste money on defense for primary positions, but force Neb to use them at an awful secondary position. No one is more overpriced defensively than A+ arm catchers, so the search was on for A+ arm catchers with awful defense at a secondary position, and decent-to-good seasons at other positions should I need them. Enter Butch Wynegar, Carlton Fisk, Craig Biggio, Brad Ausmus, Gene Tenace and Ted Simmons.

I ended up with the following defensive lineup for Neb. There’s a little flexibility here, but for the most part, he’ll be forced to use these players at awful defensive positions:

C - ’79 Tenace (A+/C+/A+)
1B – ’73 Simmons (D-/D-)
2B – ’00 Ausmus (D-/D-)
SS – ’72 Rodriguez (D-/D-)
3B – ’77 Wynegar (D/D-)
OF – ’91 Biggio (D/D-)
OF – ’81 Fisk (D/D-)
OF – ’90 Yount (A-/B+)
Bench – ’53 Williams (C-/D-), ’11 Wright (D/C+), ’46 Ott (C/D-), ’40 Cullenbine (B/C), ’96 Decker (A+/A/A+)

Team slash: .265/.349/.392

For pitching, I wanted to have a balanced mediocre to bad staff, so I immediately searched for pitchers with a 1.40 WHIP or worse and the highest $/IP. I also wanted pitchers with scrub seasons I could use on my good team.

I ended up with:

’31 Ferrell – 291 IP, 1.47 WHIP
’47 Lemon – 177 IP, 1.48 WHIP
’39 Allen – 185 IP, 1.46 WHIP
’30 Ruffing – 234 IP, 1.35 WHIP
’86 Maddux – 32 IP, 1.77 WHIP
’35 Ostermueller – 146 IP, 1.55 WHIP
’12 Kluber – 63 IP, 1.49 WHIP
’13 Halladay – 62 IP, 1.47 WHIP
’08 Kershaw – 108 IP, 1.50 WHIP
’79 Kaat – 68 IP, 1.38 WHIP
’05 Helling – 49 IP, 1.16 WHIP
’03 Gagne – 83 IP, 0.69 WHIP

Totals: 1,498 IP, 1.41 WHIP

I feel like I put together an awesome bad team, but may have compromised a tad on my good team to make it happen. I ended up with the following:

C – ’79 Wynegar
1B – ’83 Simmons
2B – ’94 Biggio
SS – ‘83 Yount
3B – ’07 Wright
OF – ’30 Ott
OF – ’41 Cullenbine
OF – ’40 Williams
Bench – ’81 Rodriguez and ’70 Tenace are my studs off the bench.

Totals: .314/.406/.490, with 338 doubles in the Polo Grounds

Pitching:

’11 Kershaw
’18 Kluber
’01 Maddux
’66 Kaat

’05 Halladay
’02 Gagne
’41 Allen
’46 Ruffing
’96 Helling

Scrubs: Lemon, Ostermueller and Ferrell

Totals: 1,455 IP, 1.06 WHIP

I feel very good about my bad team, but think my good team may struggle. I have the talent to do well though, so I’m cautiously optimistic about my chances. I definitely feel bad for NebHustker ;)

A team full of catchers... I never thought of that angle. Genius.
5/25/2019 8:28 PM
The hardest part about this was balancing the "goodness" of the good team and the "badness" of the bad team. My worst case scenario was that my bad team would dominate and my good team would only be marginally better than the other good teams.

Like schwarze, I saw albatrosses as an obvious choice. To build a winning team in the sim, you want balance and consistent quality, so it makes sense that a bad team would be the opposite. Additionally, Bonds was a natural choice not only for his bad defense, but also because, in practice, he ends up walking a lot more than actually hurting you with XBH. I also liked Maddux because he gave me flexibility (I could either use '97 as a SP or '06 as a RP).

I found pitching to be really easy to make, though -- which caused me to miss mensu's strategy. What I did instead was manually go through pitchers I knew to be good / decent values at 100M until I found ones with bad seasons. I added Eckersley and Mike Adams as safe albatrosses (very few games will be won specifically because of them if the SPs are terrible).

What I should have done was the opposite -- there are only a few hundred players with very high ERC#s. The superior strategy, if you want the worst pitching staff (or the one with the biggest delta between your good and bad teams) is to go through those few hundred and pick out the couple that have decent-to-good seasons. I hypothesize that this is what mensu did and what i wish I had thought of in time.

Either way, hitting was much more challenging and I wish I'd had more than 45min or so to put it together. Focusing on bad defense (with the bad pitching) rather than bad hitting is likely to be the better strategy since you have too pay for either defense or hitting to some degree, but good defense will make your bad pitchers overperform relative to people who use bad fielding.

My first instinct was to use all catchers but I didn't have time to put it together in terms of making my good team work. To do it successfully you probably need to minimize the amount of pitchers you use, and that's more time consuming on the pitching side (ironically?).

Instead, I took one stab at it and ended up swapping out Bonds for Lou Boudreau (who will likely have to play catcher). My good team is full of cookies with low SLG and my bad team isn't quite as desolate defensively as I'd hoped, but it was fun. No idea where we're end up, probably not near the top.

After reading about all of the treachery that you all have invested, in making your bad teams really bad, I'm beginning to realize I may be out of my depth. Ozomatli will enjoy what is likely the best pitching amongst the bad teams, and pretty decent infield defence. Not a tonne of offence, but if anybody can milk some wins out of a bad roster, I'm sure it's Ozo.
In looking at the format, I decided to build a good team roster that I could be satisfied with, and simply corrupt that roster to the best of my ability. My perspective was that I don't have the opportunity to "manage" my bad team, so I better find a good team roster that won't agitate me too much. We'll see how it plays out, but building a roster to sabotage my bad team just made my brain throb too much, so I took what appears to be an opposite approach to much of what everyone else has done.
5/26/2019 11:16 AM
I had some of the same ideas in mind for the bad team, but I don't think I executed them as cunningly, unfortunately. I wanted a few expensive players to suck up salary, bad defense at the most critical positions at least, and still be able to build a good team I could be happy with. So I was more likely to sacrifice a little badness to ensure enough goodness. Maybe a mistake.

I also made the mistake of continuing to tweak the rosters during some hectic days in my life and ended up inadvertently sending schwarze a roster $2M short on salary for the bad team. Rather than reshape it, I had to just give him better seasons for three guys, somewhat hurriedly.

I sorted for the highest $/IP and $/PA in the sim and initially picked out four high-priced RP with the intention of making sure the SP was so bad it wouldn't matter. Ended up with "only" spending $17M on 03 Gagne and 90 Eck for 157 IP. Everyone else is highly mediocre or worse.

On the offensive side, I decided on '80 Brett because he's so out of whack on $/PA and also a little low on PA so schwarze will have to figure out how to maximize him without excess fatigue. I conceded that good 3B defense isn't enough to overcome the rest of the weakness, so he can have that. I also loaded up on salary with 85 Cedeno and 53 Williams ($7.3M for 199 PA).

I wanted to make sure he only had two players who could be used at 2B and SS and not any good there. I just didn't dig deep enough. '68 Mickey Stanley and '37 Augie Galan will be poor, but not disastrous. For a long time I had a Brooks Robinson season in there at SS, but he was wasting money on my good team and I scrapped him for Galan. Schwarze can pick between '07 Kendall or '89 Biggio behind the plate, both with D- arms and both horrible in the OF, but on the plus side they won't kill him with PB.

Bad team slashes .265/.342/.411 with pitching staff at 3.97 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, 0.66 HR/9. It's not as bad as what he stuck me with, that's for sure.

Good team slashes .301/.396/.471 with pitching at 2.24, 1.01 WHIP, 0.34 HR/9. Lineup is deep and everyone gets on base. I like this team anyway.
5/26/2019 2:33 PM
The overall offense you gave me is way worse than what I gave you. I have to start some guys who are barely over .300 OBP. Ted Williams will start in the games where Brett sits (Zeile playing 3B).

As far as the team I gave you, I will be very disappointed if they don't lead the league in errors.

I don't think you'll be disappointed in the least!

First off, Jt's catcher strategy is brutal. Even though Rick handed me a crapfest, so glad I don't have the headache of a bunch of guys with shin guards all over the field!

I built each team one piece at a time (together) and the last 2-3 spots took forever. Using the super expensive 3-5 player strategy was what I decided on from the start. Settled on '21 Ruth, '05 Randy Winn, and '96 Ken Caminiti on the offensive side. '86 Cesar Cedeno and '53 Ted Williams were also in my original plans, but couldn't make them work on my good team.

Here is the bad team:

OFFENSE

C - '72 McCarver, '05 I Rodriguez Together only 586 PA with a combined line of .239, .305, .334 and cost almost 5M.
1B - '21 Ruth $26M+ was all I needed to know. '93 George Brett, a full time DH and .268 avg, will likely play here when Ruth is forced to the OF.
2B - '81 Tom Herr Almost $6.4M for a line of .268, 329, .345. Yes, his defense is A/A, but more about that later.
3B - '96 Caminiti...solid all around, but hoping normalization will cut back on those 40 HR. Almost $9M.
SS - '84 Ozzie Smith Yes, his defense is amazing, but a weak bat with only 484 PA. A couple of no hitting duds back up.
OF - '70 Larry Hisle 471 PA .205, .299, .353 C+/B defense.
OF - '87 Gary Pettis 444 PA .208, .302, .259 C+/A+
OF - '51 Mickey Mantle 467 PA .267, .349, .443 D/D-
OF - '05 Randy Winn .359, .391, .680 A/A+ A definite superstar, but with only 247 PA
With a total 1629 PA to go around, Ruth moves in here when needed, moving a weak Brett to 1B.

TOTALS 5846 PA .272 .354 .448 Without Ruth, Caminiti, and Winn it falls to the .low 240's and slugging well below .400

I allowed too much defense , but hoping the pitching is bad enough that it will mostly negate those + plays.

Pitching I wanted both Gagne and Eckersley on the team, but couldn't find an Eck that was affordable and desirable for the good team.

'99 LaTroy Hawkins 177 IP 1.71 WHIP, 1.5 HR/9
'99 Jeff Fassero 157 IP 1.86 WHIP 2.01 HR/9
'01 Darren Oliver 154 IP 1.65 WHIP 1.34 HR/9
'83 Dennis Martinez 153 IP 1.66 WHIP 1.24 HR/9
'29 Johnny Miljus 137 IP 1.86 WHIP 0.70 HR/9
'06 Ryan Madson 135 IP, 1.69 WHIP, 1.34 HR/9
'96 Paul Quantrill 135 IP, 1.66 WHIP, 1.81HR/9
'07 Roger Clemens 99 IP 1.31 WHIP 0.82 HR/9
'73 Dick Bosman 94 IP 1.64 WHIP 1.76 HR/9
'47 Roger Wolff 49 IP 2.00 WHIP 0.98 HR/9
'03 Eric Gagne and '09 Mike Adams We all know how great they are, but with only 120 IP combined, hopefully they won't add too many wins.

TOTALS 1413 IP 1.60 WHIP 1.29 HR/9 Take out Gagne and Adams the rest come in at 1.69 WHIP and 1.37 HR/9

With only 1413 IP (plus being horrific) fatigue will set in early and make this staff even worse(hopefully negate some of the good defensive help).

My "good team" outlook:

LINEUP

C - '04 Ivan Rodriguez 575 PA .334, .383, .510 carries most of the load here, with the '70 McCarver a solid backup.
1B - '88 George Brett 686 PA .306, .389, .509
2B - '85 Tom Herr 696 PA .302, .379, .416
3B - '95 Ken Caminiti 678 PA .302, .380, .513
SS - '89 Ozzie Smith 664 PA .273, .335, .361 There were a couple different versions more desirable, but not for the $.
OF - '54 Mickey Mantle 685 PA .300, .408, .525
OF - '08 Randy Winn 667 PA .306, .363, .426
OF - '25 Babe Ruth 449 PA .290, .393, .543 Not expecting greatness here...hit some HR and not kill me on defense.
OF - '75 Larry Hisle 295 PA .314, .376, .494 The RH platoon with Ruth.

TOTALS: 5833 PA .303, 376, .469
Felt like a few extra PA needed as the pitching for the bad teams will make it rough on fatigue. I really wanted a little higher OBP, but just couldn't afford it. OVERALL DEFENSIVE RATINGS: B-/B-

PITCHING

'91 Roger Clemens 272 IP 1.05 WHIP
'45 Roger Wolff 263 IP 1.01 WHIP
'92 Dennis Martinez 227 IP 1.03 WHIP
'69 Dick Bosman 193 IP 1.01 WHIP IMHO, a solid value at about $31K/IP Use him quite a bit in 100M leagues.
'02 LaTroy Hawkins 81 IP 0.97 WHIP
'27 Johnny Miljus 80 IP 1.04 WHIP 0 HR/9
'03 Paul Quantrill 78 IP 0.98 WHIP
'10 Mike Adams 67 IP 1.06 WHIP

'17 Ryan Madson 59 IP 0.80 WHIP The closer.
'12 Darren Oliver 57 IP 1.92 WHIP
'91 Jeff Fassero 56 IP 1.01 WHIP A little more expensive than I would have liked, but the low HR/9 was appealing.
'07 Greg Gagne 33 IP 1.05 WHIP

TOTALS: 1465 IP 1.01 WHIP 0.39 HR/9 Not as strong a staff as I normally have, but in order to make sure Rick's staff was absolutely horrendous and with lower total IP, there were sacrifices made...especially in the bullpen.

Overall outlook

It looks to me that neither team I built is at the top or bottom of the heap. Probably a mistake to allow such good defense on the bad team. Expecting a middle of the road result overall. A fun build though...thanks Jeff!

I’ll be impressed if your bad team tops mine. 6 guys with D ratings playing secondary positions. Plus they’re all modern guys playing in front of a lot of older pitcher innings. Should be an interesting “race”.

The slash line for the team besides Brett is.254/.331/.387. Take away Cedeno and Williams too and it's .248/.325/.371 for the remaining 5,283 PA.

I think the significantly worse defense will hurt me more, though I guess we'll find out soon enough. I hadn't really factored the possibility of fatigue being worse with these bad teams involved, and that could prove another type of pain.

I first wanted to reduce salary on the bad team. I chose 21 Ruth and his 26,701,562 salary. I also needed another reducer but I did not want to choose a starter. Redwing is too good a manager to give him that kind of weapon. So I chose the expensive Eckersley and his 74 IP for 7,573,308. Now to minimize the potential offensive threat of Ruth, I must not give Redwing any other offensive threats. Since WIS values defense I could get poor hitters by getting good defensive players. I know this strategy is contrary to many others in this theme but I chose to sacrifice bad fielding to get bad hitting.

If you take Ruth out of the equation, all of my other hitters have 5,216 PA .225 BA/.286 OBP/.320 SLG. My fielding for those players is B-/B-.

Again my only decent pitcher is my closer Eckersley 74 IP/0.61 ERA/.161 OAV/0.61 WHIP/.25 HR. My other pitchers have 1,394 IP/4.08 ERA/.270 OAV/1.37 WHIP/.75 HR. I do not have a stud starter. I don't plan to have that many leads going into the ninth for Eckersley to be a factor.

My good team including Ruth has 6.092 PA/.297 BA/.376 OBP/.441 SLG/.814 OPS. My defense is solid c-/a- at 2b,a-/a- at SS, b+b+ at 1b,and c-/b- at 3b. OF and c are mediocre fielders. My pitching is solid. I went with 4 of my favorite starters 09 Lincecum, 03 Hudson, 03 Hudson, and 01 Johnson. Overall my pitching is 1,420 IP/ 2.36 ERA/1.02 WHIP/ .211 OAV.

I am lousy at predicting but here is my shot. My bad team will play 88 Good teams and 74 Bad teams..Of those 74 games 2 series will be 4 games and 22 series will be 3 games. My good team will be playing 88 games against bad teams and 74 games will be against good teams. Again 2 series will be 4 games and 22 series will be 3 games.

Bad Team. I believe all bad teams for all users will need to go minimum of 18 - 70 against good teams. If all other bad teams have at least one stud pitching in 24 series I will need to go 10 - 14 minimally in those games. That leaves 50 games against other bad teams non studs. I hope to do better than this but lets assume .500 so 25 - 25.

Bad team summary
18 - 70 Good teams
10 - 14 Bad team studs
25 - 25 Bad team non - studs
53 - 109 Total

Good team. Using the same logic all bad teams studs should be .500 13 - 13. That leaves 62 games against bad teams 44 - 18. Also .500 against other good teams which is 37 - 37.

Good team summary
44 - 18 Bad teams
13 - 13 Bad team studs
37 - 37 Good Teams
94 - 68 Total

My math maybe screwy and feel free to correct me. But I am looking at accumulating 94 g0od team wins and 109 bad team losses for a total of 203 points. Whether I get that high seems like a longshot but I think the winner of this thing will get at least that many points. My gamble is that bad hitting and bad pitching will out lose bad fielding teams.

I will be extremely shocked and disappointed if my good team (or any good team) loses 18 games vs bad teams (vs non stud pitchers). In fact, I bet that number will be less than half that. Maybe even as few as 5 losses. Against bad team stud pitchers, I would expect better than .500 record in those games. Also, why would bad teams "waste" a stud pitcher against good teams, when they could maximize their wins vs bad teams.

My prediction. Most good teams will be over 100 wins. The very best good teams will approach 120 wins.

The fun thing about this league is that all the good team players will reach or exceed their real life stats. Plate appearance fatigue will definitely be an issue for some teams.
