Lineup Question Topic

I’m usually not one to post these types of questions but looking for some thoughts on my Oregon team. We run motion/press. I’ve experimented with a few combinations so far but not sure what I like the best. Specifically:
1) Is Russo my PF?
2) Is Thomas my backup PG? If not Thomas, who?
3) Who is my starting SG?

Of note, Zellner has to start because of promises. On paper we’re a good squad with lots of ST but the pieces don’t all quite fit right.

I like the lineup you had against Arizona in the last game. Not a big fan of Mayes speed at SF but the rest of his skills are great. Using Russo to increase the speed in the press at PF is a good move IMO

Bench Mayes I think I hate low SP/REB combo guys... although what about Mayes at the 4? I like him there more than the 3 idk
Taylor-Thomas-Russo-Mayes-Robinette for NT I say...

Taylor on getting tired.

Backups you do

Thomas-Miller-Yusef-Gomez-Zelner
bruno-Bruno at the 2-3

Problems solved.

You have Thomas starting at the 2 and backing up the 1, which is the same conundrum I’m having ??

Without looking at what others have said... My thoughts

PG - Taylor, Miller, Linehan
SG - Thomas, Bruno, Glassman
SF - Mayes, Yusuf, Glassman
PF - Russo, Zellner, Yusuf
C - Robinette, Gomez, Yusuf

That stamina is ridiculous, nice work.

Your team is good on more than just paper. It’s been a while since I ran a straight press, so grain of salt, this may not be optimizing substitution patterns in a press.

Lineup I’d use starting in conference tourney.
PG - Taylor, Linehan, Bruno, Glassman
SG - Thomas, Miller, Russo, Glassman
SF - Mayes, Yusuf, Russo, Glassman
PF - Gomez, Zellner, Russo, Yusuf
C - Robinette, Zellner, Russo, Yusuf

He has 98 stamina! Play him at both.

My 2 cents:

I think Mayes is unplayable at the 3 and Lineham /Glassman are just not very good. I've seen Snewell make an NC game running a 50 reb guy at the 4... I think you've got to but Mayes there and take the L on the boards....

I’d like to hear more about Mayes being “unplayable” at the 3. He’s an elite athletic defender, who has excellent guard skills (BH, Pass). IMO, he’s a 3. Hell, I’d rather play him at 2 than 4. I realize a straight press puts a bit of a premium on speed at all positions, but it’s not the only factor.

Mayes is fine at the 3 until he goes up against a guard with 85+ speed (like in Oregon's only loss against Duke) and he just gets dominated...

I love him against guys like the USC 3 who aren't exceptionally fast or athletic, or the Gonzaga 3 Riley Hurt (who Mayes is just way better than and not even much slower than) but in an E8 game I'm guessing he's gonna face people more like the 'Zona 3 (10 points 7 possession...Idk why he doesn't get the ball more) or the Duke guy (13 points in 10 possessions...not to mention 3 assists and 3 steals from a 1st year JUCO). When he face someone like this or this at the 3 I don't think it is going to go well.

Guarding an elite scorer rarely goes well. If you’re putting Russo there, you’re getting burned by those players, too. Worse, I’m almost 100% certain. You’re giving up 50 points combined ath/def to get 24 points speed. Not a good trade off, IMO, not even in press.

Really appreciate the feedback everyone, thanks! The team is a bit of a hodgepodge because the talent on the West coast dictated how the team was built much more so than I would have liked. I will admit, the dang Duke game was the 1 game this season I forgot to gameplay for. D'oh!

i hate to boil such a complex issue down to a binary, but i'm going to anyway. shoe is right, calling that guy unplayable at the 3 is way off. he's a better defender than russo against every opposing 3 in every situation (any arbitrary theoretical game). and you guys know how much i like to harp on those 5% of cases that don't fit the 95% rules of thumb...
4/6/2020 1:58 PM
Yeah I'm not a Russo fan either I guess.
