Coaches Wanting Their Old Teams Back Topic

Hey all, just wanted to get some opinions on this. For the third team in a matter of a couple of weeks, I've picked up a team and had the previous coach contact me and say that they didn't mean to drop their team and is there any way I would let them have them back. Once was during the job application period and CS allowed me to move to another team in order to let the old coach move back to his team that he inadvertently forgotten to renew. Two other coaches have contacted me in worlds after the season began and asked me if I would be willing to move after a single season in order for them to try to get back the team that apparently THEY forgot to renew.

I'm probably going to try to move so those coaches can attempt to get their teams back, but this is starting to get a bit ridiculous. Three different coaches, in three different worlds, in a matter of a couple of weeks and none of them care enough about their teams to make sure that they have renewed? I'm trying not to be the bad guy here because I know how it feels to take the time to build up a program, but damn......really? To beat all, these are not new coaches, all have been around for some time.

Thoughts?

Following. I forgot to renew Kentucky 29 seasons ago in Rupp, and I'd like to get them back, too.

While it hasn't happened to me, I've seen it a few times recently with other coaches. It's such a touchy subject, but if I were in your shoes, I'd feel the same way. It was nice of you to switch before the season started, but for the other two who asked to get the team back after you coached them for a year.... That's a different story, IMO that's YOUR team after you coach them and recruit your players. I admire that you're still considering giving them back, but I wouldn't feel bad about keeping those two; I think you're being too generous. While I feel bad for the other coaches, I don't think you shouldn't be punished because they forgot to renew.

If they're contacting you AFTER the season already began then they must not be very invested in their team to leave them auto-renew and then not even notice they lost their team for several days. That includes Renewal period, job period, Recruiting session 2. That whole time they didn't realize they lost their team?

I say, if they contact you during job period and you want to be a nice guy, go ahead and move. But after the season starts? Nah. Time for the previous coach to move on. You shouldn't feel obligated to move or else you're perceived as a dick.

If you want the team then keep it. Don't let them make you feel bad for their mistake.

i do wonder about this too. chap/myself picked up a team last week and had the same thing. we abdicated but the coach also made a comment like, i really wanted to see this one class through, perhaps in 2 seasons when i leave you can have them. and its like... well... no, by then, the resume will be trashed from a rebuild (was a+ d1).

i have no ill will to that guy *at all* and want to make that clear - but it did make me wonder how many of these guys were on the fence, forgot to decide, and then lost the team - and now want it back? IMO if thats me, i walk, take it as a sign or something. but the guys who've been there 20+ seasons and want to stay 20+ more, i could never withhold the job from them after getting it, thats brutal.

i was all for them adding a way to 'stand up' from a job, because in the olden days, you had to ticket CS to get removed from a job, without taking another. but these issues seem to happen all the time. this honestly seems worse. i do wonder how much is genuine mistakes and how much is ambivalence though, the incidence just seems too high.

Or how many of them wanted to take advantage of the double recruiting money and didn't know the flaw was fixed.

As a dumb **** that has forgotten to renew, I can say if someone told me no when I asked I would be disappointed but not angry. If you don’t want to give up the team, don’t do it.

the redshirting a senior thing seems pretty whack too. has anyone tried redshirting a senior during signings to see if you can get 13 players or blow the game up?

This is EXACTLY what I believe. I don't know the names of the coaches doing this, and i don't need/want to know. But I guarantee some of these situations were the "play with fire and try to get double resources" thing. And they either a) didn't know it was fixed. Or b) a "better" coach actually beat them for the job, after not having anyone with a better profile, beat them for the job until now ..

Once job period ends, if they haven't seen that they lost their team, you should not feel bad one bit that you have the team. If it takes you even more, like a season to notice, cmon, they gotta move on.

You have to redshirt before the job change period.

If you move after the season won't your coach reputation take a hit? Not you mention adding another year to your long-term coach status, as well as wasting a year of recruiting. You are essentially spending $12.95 (or something close) to solve someone else's mistake.

"Two other coaches have contacted me in worlds after the season began and asked me if I would be willing to move after a single season in order for them to try to get back the team that apparently THEY forgot to renew."

This is just a ridiculous request for undeserved charity.

Suggested reply: "I might have been able to help you with this if you'd asked during the job change period. But I've paid for the team, I've recruited players, and I'm going to see them through without taking a loyalty hit for job-hopping. If you'd like to join the conference and go up against your old players, I'd welcome the competition!"
