Strong Defense: Very Good Topic

It seems like this is the white whale of player preferences. I’ve got it for the first time ever.

Have you guys come across it before?

D1 coaches might find it easier to get, so I’ll direct it to anyone from a D2/D3 level.

Never, I think this is a very cool accomplishment!

I am thinking Francis Marion is the team to beat this season. It will be fun to see what happens when one Very Good strong defense matches up against another Very Good strong defense.

I'm stuck at good despite these defensive team stats.

So to me this is definitely an impressive accomplishment.

These are the two teams that are currently listed as Very Good for strong defense: Humboldt State and Francis Marion.

Note that Humboldt is not nearly as good in FG% and may be on the verge of falling back to Good. Note also that the rebound differential and the turnover differential are both at least 10.0. I wonder if these factor into the strong defense equation. Blocked shots and steals for both of these teams are positive, but not overwhelming. These are both break/press teams.

Would be very curious to see what the threshold is if Humboldt State falls back to good.

I got it a few seasons in a row at Stevens Tech. I played in an empty conference, which certainly helped. If I could get out of noncon with good, I could usually get it to very good by the end of the season.

Big accomplishment if you can do it in a competitive conference.

The metric used is opponents’ points per possession, so rebounds and turnovers influence it that way. As far as I know, their influence is limited to how they function in that calculation, and have no stand-alone effect.

As a side note I am only at Good in Knight.

Francis Marion is scoring an impressive 75.64% while Humboldt State is over 80% (anything under 82% will score VG for preference).

Humboldt just dropped to Good in strong defense. These teams are in the top two (RPI) conferences in DII Tark. I am betting, though, that Francis Marion completes conference play and still has a Very Good in strong defense.

There are a lot of good coaches to get through in conference play.

By the end of that I am hoping the team will be at 85D and 85 Stamina

most guys are black in both, but a few greens and blues mixed in.

FYI - for those not familiar - it's actually not a %. I think Buddha had a typo.

It's points per 100 possessions. So you'd be giving up 75.64 points per 100 possessions or 0.75 points per possession.

Also, there are two commonly used formulas - either 0.475 * FTA or 0.44 * FTA. I use 0.475 but I'm not sure which one Seble chose to use.
