Centerfield Ratings Topic

I need some opinions.

What is the lowest Range/Glove combination that you can get by with in CF?

I have a guy with 82 range / 76 glove in a fairly big park (Wichita). He is pretty much 70's across the board offensively.

Will a player like that hurt you more than help you?

Thanks in advance for any input you can give.

82 is a little low for range ( I like to see 85 or higher), but the 76 glove is fine. It doesn't look like you have any better options for a good defensive center fleilder with a decent bat, so I'd go with him.

For him to have those ratings Id want a high .800 ops or better. Link the player.

How do I link it?

He is not nearly good enough hitter to sacrifice his def. You should be able to find someone better. He's barely a .700 ops at the ml level. Id want gold glove def for a player hitting that.

Look at succesful owners and the players they use.

Mostly agree with the above post. I have him at .730 OPS due to his ability to hit from both sides of the plate, but the missed opportunity to have a great defender or great hitter will show up in the win column. The OPS would be fine if he offered 85+ range and glove. However, since his defense is below the MLB recs at CF, I would want a bat that is near .800 OPS.

Maybe try to take him and package him with a mid tier prospect or DITR and see if you can get an upgrade via trade.
Agree with the evaluation but I like him better than tlowster does. These players are really useful because they are:
a) about 0.5 - 1 WAR better than replacement, and
b) cheap.

Nice reserve OF. Also useful as a starter in CF or LF on a team that needs to meet a league minimum win requirement while rebuilding. Do not take him to arb a second time.

The 65 speed is the killer, for me. With 90+ speed he'd be a very good player. As it is he's a useful bench guy.

I don't think he kills you in center. I've used a 86/77 guy in center off and on the last few seasons(his bat isn't great but he is my best option some days). He has been around a .980 fielding % with 8 errors in 170+ games. This probably would put him slightly above league average for centerfielders. I don't think you start to see the range result in negative plays until you are under 80. Check your leagues fielding stats for centerfielders and look at their ratings and how they perform. If he is your best option.....go for it. You just can't walk out and get a 90/90 guy with 800 OPS to play center. I would be more worried about getting Delgado to third and not playing him in RF. He is a better fielder than either of the guys at 3rd and there is way more chances at third than RF.

Thank you all so much. I appreciate all the advice and comments. I'm learning the game, and with help like this, I hope to be a fairly quick study.

You should have claimed this guy off waivers. Player Profile: Juan Hernandez - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports
Your team would be pretty good if it had some hitting. Id never use that guy Player Profile: Duke Small - Hardball Dynasty Baseball | WhatIfSports if I was trying to win.

Hernandez is the better player, for sure. But $7M vs. $327k

He has 46 plus plays and only one minus play in CF in the minors. Seems good enough to play CF
