Commish's Comments

1. cmcafeeky

1. LeBron James - There should never ever be any other name in this spot. Even if you didn't want to use Lebron you'd be a fool not to trade down. Hands down the best player in Savage. Congrats cmc.

2. jhsukow

1. Wilt Chamberlain - It's certainly not the easier choice but I like Wilt at #2 as well. Still has incredible upside but needs more planning than any other 1st rounder.

3. jkaye24

1. Steph Curry - Last season jkaye didn't draft any high usg until the 4th and still finished 2nd. Now he's starting with Curry? I still have PTSD from this combo in the TEPL ugh.

4. tarheel1991

1. Shaquille O'Neal - Shaq is still my favorite after the big 3. Getting some Season 1 kinoa vibes here and I don't like it.

5. robusk

1. Dwight Howard - Doesn't feel like a reach at all to me. Kareem is the only guy I'd definitely take over him here. Just don't pull a LTB and forget to use one of his elite seasons haha.

6. pexetera

1. Michael Jordan - Saw this one coming a mile away. Already saw what pex can do with DWade and MJ is waaaaay more consistent throughout his 5 seasons.

7. dbkc

1. Giannis Antetokounmpo - No worrying about 19-20 being released this time. Giannis is a locked in top 10 pick now. Still have to navigate the tricky SF/PF split though. I'd much rather have Kareem.

8. albiband0

1. Chris Paul - albi is gonna sleep easy tonight with the amazing security CP3 gives you. I've found PG to be the most stressful position in Savage.

9. gerryred

1. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - Steal! Or is it? Maybe? All I know is that I was not disappointed at all when I took him #1 in the first Savage league. 71-72 is an absolute league winner.

10. jpevans31

1. David Robinson - I feel like there's a clear cut top 9, so this must have been a tough decision. Can't go wrong with the guy who just led dbkc to the Savage crown.

11. ysw128

1. Kevin Durant - I like the next 4 players better to build around in this league. But KD is still an elite #1 scorer. He also might be the hardest guy to choose which 5 seasons to use. Do you go for more mins or better efficiency?

12. beloud

1. Karl Malone - I enjoyed building around him during the last Savage season. So nice to have a #1 scorer and good D at the 4/5 locked away early. I'll be curious to see if you use the same seasons as I did. I feel like 4 of them are must haves.

13. 24kpyrite

1. Charles Barkley - Chuck is the rare 1st rounder that puts you behind on defense but his ability to play SF(in at least 3 of his seasons) more than makes up for it. Such a great rebounding advantage there.
2. Jason Kidd - This is my favorite pairing so far. I thought it was important to lock in some backcourt D with this pick.

14. ashamael

1. James Harden - There's only 5 elite guards in Savage and you got one of them. I was kinda surprised you wanted to trade out of the pick.
2. Ben Wallace - There goes Round 3s pipe dream. Wasn't even close haha. Should have known super clean elite defense wasn't gonna last very long in these shark infested waters.

15. 20ks

1. Kevin Garnett - You said, "I've already fated myself to a middle of the pack finish." I couldn't disagree more. KG has already proved he can be a league winner when he led pex to a Savage crown in season two. I had him as one of the last two no-doubt-about-it 1st rounders when you made the pick. I'd rather have KG and the options at your 2nd than DRob and the 2nd round options at #10.
2. Steve Nash - In another WIS lifetime I would have laughed that he fell this far in a league like this. Defense matters more now but Nash is still so damn good on offense he's hard to pass up at this point.

16. jcred5

1. Larry Bird - The last great 1st rounder IMO. Our trade worked out nicely for you. Bird and whoever falls to you in the 2nd is gonna be a dangerous combo. And the great thing is, nearly every single 2nd rounder works well with him. Not as sexy as some of the other 1st rounders but I love him as a building block.
2. Gary Payton - You can pretty much do whatever you want at SG now. Payton is a rock solid 2nd rounder imo.

17. mikee1

1. Anthony Davis - Super clean scorer with elite D. I'd feel better getting him later in the 1st though with a better chance to grab Rodman/DeAndre/Gobert.
2. Klay Thompson - Ohhhh sooo close to getting Rodman. Would have been a great fit. I love the ridiculously clean 1-2 scoring punch but you're gonna be chasing boards and dimes the rest of the draft now.

18. notoriousj

1. Artis Gilmore - Never been a big fan. He's one of those guys I'm always hoping someone else takes.
2. Dennis Rodman - Rodman has some killer value as a 2nd round pick. Scary start on the boards.

19. bds9992

1. DeAndre Jordan - DeAndre is never a bad pick. The man just wins. Constantly.
2. Kevin McHale - I'd love it more if I didn't think you're probably gonna play most of his minutes at SF. Is it the right move? I dunno...but that 96/97% bugs the hell out of me.

20. kinoa1

1. Tim Duncan - I know I wasn't the only one thrilled that King Kinoa didn't get a top 10 pick. Duncan should hopefully be more of a challenge than Shaq.
2. Kawhi Leonard - Gulp

21. benhoidal

1. John Stockton - My pipe dream for the 24th pick. I think he might be my favorite of the 1/2 turn guys.
2. Dr. J - Gotta love that 40 mins of flexibility at the 2/3.

22. amerk1180

1. Moses Malone - This seems to be where Moses has settled as a draft pick despite the WIS pedigree of a 10-16 pick. It feels right for him. Those turnovers are tough.
2. Scottie Pippen - I glad you didn't run it back. That would have been kinda lame. Plus Pippen might even be a better fit since he shoots some 3s.

23. midge

1. Magic Johnson - You suck. I feel like midge has Gobert/McHale in almost every draft and I was kinda hoping he'd pass on Magic for that combo here too.
2. Rudy Gobert - midge got his guy. I really love this start. Kinda like the Stockton/DeAndre start for jkaye last season but possibly even scarier?

24. dh555

1. Hakeem Olajuwon - Not as easy as I thought picking his 5 seasons. I might try to fit his awesome 90-91 season in if I can.
2. Dwyane Wade - Locked into a ****** offense now but wow that defense...

dBKC Evals

“Big 4” Evals

Cmcafeeky: LeBron, Larry Nance, Robert Parish, Joakim Noah

Getting Noah was clever. LeBron is best when playing PG, but you’ll need to get some assists elsewhere in order to pull that off. Parish has a variety of different types of seasons to play with - sometimes he can be a great 2nd banana to LeBron, other times he can be a more balanced sidekick. Good start, but I would’ve been too tempted to go with Paul George at the end of round 2. You’ll be hunting for 3s quite a bit going forward. Rebounding and D should be strong.

jhsukow: Wilt, Bill Russell, Kyrie Irving, Kobe Bryant

This is pretty scary, tbh. Two fantastic rebounders up front, one of the best 3pt shooters in the SIM, and then Kobe’s do-it-all profile. Also you have 3 absolute minutes beasts. Assists will be just meh, which is a huge pivot for you. I think you made the right pick in all 4 rounds, but you have very specific needs for your 5th starter and I’m interested to see if you can get it.

jkaye24: Steph Curry, KAT, Donyell Marshall, Pau Gasol

At first glance, I don’t like Gasol as KAT’s frontcourt partner. However, Jkaye is a monster in savage (2nd place last season) so I’ll trust his process. The shooting is absolutely fantastic, and the D is just okay, there will be lots of 300 point games for this team, but having Steph in the clutch means you’ll probably win most of them. Curious to see who your 5th starter will be, could go in a few directions. I think you’re primed to grab a great player that doesn’t fit most teams since your build will allow it.

tarheel1991: Shaq, Tyson Chandler, Mookie Blaylock, Jrue

4 great players...interesting fit. Shaq is an incredible scorer but just an okay rebounder. Tyson is a good defender and extremely efficient but just an okay rebounder as well. Combine that with what appears to be Jrue at SG and I don’t think this team will win many rebounding battles. However, the passing looks good with a Mookie/Jrue backcourt, and the efficiency with those two feeding Shaq/Tyson will be good. Mookie stretching the floor for Shaq is nice too. Little dilemma with your 5th starter: do you get a PF that can play SF and try to shore up the boards but then have teams pack the paint on you since Mookie is the only real outside threat? Or do you double down on efficiency and put a shooter there? I could see this team being really good, or outside the top half, it all depends how the next picks go.

Robusk: Dwight Howard, Shawn Marion, Kyle Lowry, Deron Williams

I like what Robusk is doing. Pretty sure Lowry/Deron make a voltron PG between the two. It’s risky to do that before picking starters, but it can pay off well. I did the same with Deron/(undrafted) last season and was happy with the results. Marion has some seasons where he can be a SG, and others where he has to play PF. Interested to see how you draft around that. This is a very Robusk team - nice and clean, every minute these 4 guys already has an earmarked purpose, I’m sure. I’d be shocked if you didn’t have a top-8 finish. You’re in good position to draft a couple BPAs going forward.

Pexetera: Michael Jordan, Andre Drummond, Clint Capela, Andre Kirilenko

Capela and AK47 in the 3rd/4th feel like the most Pex moves possible. This team is going to feast on the boards. There are going to be some interesting lineups. I’m sure we’ll see plenty of MJ at PG, with Kirilenko playing a Pippen-role. Interested to see what the 5th starter will be and if it’ll be someone who gives me pause to playing -3 on this squad. Pex is a savage in savage, and I’m sure this will be a very strong contender this season.

dBKC: Giannis, Shawn Kemp, Ben Simmons, Clyde Drexler

I went with Kemp/Simmons in the 2nd/3rd in S2 when I finished with the silver medal....however, they were complimenting the best shooter of all time (Steph) that season, and this season they’re complimenting Giannis and his “please don’t take a 3!” jumper. Drexler gives me a little shooting but I’m on the hunt for more. I have to figure out how to play Giannis at PF in 2 seasons and at SF in 3 seasons (and who to draft to make that possible), but my boards should be strong, especially in the 3 Simmons seasons. Passing should be above average with Giannis in the frontcourt. Drexler is a nice chess piece who will start in a few leagues and who will be a super 6th man in others. I was looking at Kobe and Kirilenko and Jrue and Deron in the 4th but got poached 4x

Albiband0: Chris Paul, Dikembe Mutombo, Carlos Boozer, Alvin Robertson

I love Chris Paul in this format. Dikembe was a solid pick where he went. Boozer was a bit of a reach and I don’t like the fit with Mutombo, personally, because Mutombo is a great defender but he can’t switch with PFs and Boozer is a liability on D there. This team will be on the hunt for 3s, usage, and boards, which are three things that won’t be found in the same player at this point in the draft. A few creative picks in the next few rounds could help this roster look more balanced.

Gerryred: Kareem, Buck Williams, Mark Price, Rajon Rondo

Cant go wrong with Kareem at 9. Buck is a nice piece to have in this league because he helps you with the rebounding advantage while also being an efficient scorer and decent defender. I know PG platoons are popular but I’m not sure if I’d want to use my 3rd and 4th round picks on a Price/Rondo platoon. They’re two completely different types of PGs, and that may create some team building challenges moving forward.

jpevans31: David Robinson, Nikola Jokic, Manu Ginobili, Emeka Okafor

I like the Admiral/Joker pairing up front but I’m not sure if Jokic is worth a mid-2nd. However, you could do some really interesting things now that you have a high volume passer up front, such as running Manu at PG and still having solid passing. That would create a good rebounding advantage. However, if that’s the plan the I would’ve went with a backup big man who could pass instead of Emeka. Manu was great value where he went, he’ll contribute in all 5 leagues.

ysw128: Kevin Durant, Hassan Whiteside, Alonzo Mourning, Derrick Harper

KD is a great building block since 3s are at a premium, so long as you can deal with essentially 0 ORBs from your SF. Whiteside is a great complimentary piece, he and KD give you two super efficient scorers, and his ORBs help make up the difference. Mourning in the mid-3rd is a steal and gives you a great defensive foundation with him and Hassan. Harper is a solid glue guy here but if I could change any of your picks, it would be that one. Mostly because the other picks were all pretty much perfect.

Beloud: Karl Malone, Oscar Robertson, Serge Ibaka, Jerry Lucas

4 great players individually but I don’t really see the fit together. Typically with Serge you want to take advantage of his defensive flexibility by having a PF and maybe even a C who can switch with him on D. Oscar is great but I don’t know if you want him to be your only playmaker since he’s just an okay passer. Lucas is great but I don’t know if I’d play him at C in this league. However: all 4 of them are great players, so the next few picks could tie it all together and have you looking like a major problem.

24kpyrite: Charles Barkley, Jason Kidd, Chauncey Billups, Amare Stoudemire

Barkley was chalk at your pick and a great building block. Kidd is a great complimentary piece to Barkley. Billups is good but I think he’ll be playing some SG? I would’ve went Manu there. You’ll have 48 minutes of great PG play in all 4 leagues though! Amare is great but he and Barkley on D will give you some problems. The good news is you won’t be hunting for 3s, so you can address those issues in the draft without worrying about much else. This is a fun team.

Ashamael: James Harden, Ben Wallace, Horace Grant, Bob McAdoo

Harden plus D+Rebounders is a classic strategy in this league and Wallace and Horace are great pieces for that build. McAdoo is a nice secondary scorer and gives you lots of minutes as well. Interested to see what you look for in Harden’s backcourt mate. There’s a few directions. Either a straight up 2-guard and run Harden at PG, or maybe a high volume passer and run Harden at the 2. Interested to see what you go with.

20ks: Kevin Garnett, Steve Nash, Elton Brand, Gerald Wallace

I like this. A lot. Brand was a steal in the mid 3rd. Lots of great defenders to make up for Nash’s lack of. Not much to say with this one, you haven’t really reached once and have a foundation for a good team.

jcred5: Larry Bird, Gary Payton, Bill Walton, Tree Rollins

Bird is a great building block in Savage. Payton is nice because PGs are at a premium and he has 5 good high minute seasons, so you are saving a pick down the road since you won’t have to platoon. I love Bill Walton. I just won the crown with him at about this spot. He’s very good in the few minutes that he plays. I think Tree was a bit of a reach but I see why you wanted him. This team is good all around and can go in a few different directions. You don’t really have a clear strength but you also don’t have a clear weakness. I think those things will be determined by who you pick in 5/6

Mikee1: AD, Klay, Clyde Frazier, Marques Johnson, Embiid

AD is great, obviously, just have to get the right pieces around him. I wasn’t high on the Klay pick, but I do like a Frazier/Klay backcourt, provided you can add assists elsewhere in the next couple of rounds. I think this team is going to be too light on the boards. AD/Klay/Marques are all average to below average rebounders for their position. The D and efficiency will be good though.

NotoriousJ: Artis Gilmore, Rodman, Lillard, Vucevic, Faried

TONS of boards. Lillard plus elite rebounding seems like a pretty solid strategy. I think there’s a chance with the right picks in the next few rounds that this can be a contender. Still need to shore up some areas, but it’s doable. I think this might be one of those squads that has a title contender or two (the leagues that get Lillard, Vuc, Rodman’s best seasons) and misses the playoffs in others. You can still win with that strategy though.

bds9992: DeAndre Jordan, Kevin McHale, Paul George, Penny, Paul Pierce

DAJ is like the perfect frountcourt partner for McHale. They compliment each other pretty well. Paul George where you got him was a steal. Penny is a great player but he’s a little light on assists to be your lead passer. Luckily Pierce and PG each have some decent passing seasons and you might be able to assemble the pieces between the 3 of them to be solid in most leagues when it comes to passing. Interested to see if PG and Pierce both start in some leagues (which would put you a lil light on boards but would give you great perimeter scoring and good passing), or if they’re a platoon. Not sure if you’re relying too much on DeAndre’s rebounding though. Ignoring getting another rebounder for too long could put you behind on boards. Smart move getting 4 high usage guys in the first 5 rounds.

kinoa1: Duncan, Kawhi, Bobby Jones, Jerry West, Brent Barry

If anyone else would’ve drafted this, I’d say it was a bottom-half squad. But when Kinoa picks someone, it makes me go “crap...should I have taken Jerry West in the 4th?!” - I had Admiral and Kawhi last season, which is more formidable than Duncan/Kawhi, but it looks like the strategy here will be a super CLEAN (low TOs/fouls) game with good D and passing-by-committee. Obviously Kinoa will be a contender. He’s 1 for 1 in Savage. Welcome back, even though you’re gonna make my life harder.

Benhoidal: John Stockton, Julius Erving, Draymond Green, Dirk, Andrew Bogut

Stockton/Draymond/Bogut equals crazy assists. Dr J and Dirk should get a nice eFG% bonus from all of the passing around them. Dirk being able to switch with both Draymond and Bogut means he can hide him on the opponent’s worst frontcourt player. The rest of the squad is great defensively. Good start, and I’m sure Ben will make some nice picks in the next few rounds to bring it all together. Now we see if he tries to win 2 chips or send all 5 to the playoffs.

Amerk1180: Moses, Peggy Pippen, Ewing, Bledsoe, Horford

This is actually a pretty well-designed squad. Bledsoe is light on assists for a PG, but Pippen and Horford supplement him there. Moses and Ewing should hold down the paint nicely. Only real concern is perimeter shooting, IMO. Should be a top-half squad if the rest of the picks go right.

Midge: Magic, Rudy Gobert, Ray Allen, Montrezl Harrell, Dave Cowens

Midge is good at drafting specialists and making sure everyone has a role. Once he started with Magic, the strategy seemed to be: get a paint monster, a shooter, a paint defender, etc. and that’s what he did. Ray Allen stretches the floor, Rudy and Montrezl are lob threats, Magic is the engine. Not sure if Cowens was worth picking in the early 5th but I like the other 4 picks quite a bit. Allen might’ve been a slight reach but he fits the squad well. Harrell and Gobert will have crazy eFG%.

dh555: Hakeem, D-Wade, Camby, Jimmy Buckets, Terrell Brandon

Defense, boards, paint scoring, passing...got it all on lock. Shooting? Not so much...that can come later though. I like the strategic move to drop down to 24 and get 3 of the first 49 players. Not sure if Camby is a top 50 player though. I would’ve been tempted to draft George in the 3rd and tan Wade at PG. Interested to see if Butler is strictly a Wade back-up, or if he gets some run next to him too

I think we can all agree that Savage III lacked the excitement that the previous two Savages had. So I wanted to look at some of the causes and possible solutions to fix it.

Savage fatigue - I think we were all feeling it after running 3 of them in a row. We won't be making that mistake again. I won't set an exact amount of time between each time I run it, but there will be AT LEAST a 3 week break from the time a Savage league ends to the time we start the new one.

Rosters - Not having a regularly updated Team Rosters sucks. They're useful for the draft process and for owners wishing to comment on other teams. From now on, I'll be keeping track of the team rosters on page 1 of this thread and updating it every time I update page 1 of the draft thread.

Standings update - This was a killer. We desperately need to keep the standings regularly updated. Big thanks to those owners who did their part in the first 3 seasons. It's a lot of work to do for free, so here's my thinking...

We assign 1 owner to be the official scorekeeper. I don't expect the scoreboard to be updated every single day, but at least updated like once every 3 days. That owner will receive $50 so that they play Savage for free. I think that is only fair for such a tedious job. Each owner will be required to send the scorekeeper $2 with the remaining $4 picked up by me. I don't really care who takes the job, but would prefer robusk, pexetera, or 20ks since they already have experience doing it.

So if you want the job, please let me know here or through sitemail. If two or more owners want to split the job and the money, that is fine by me.

If you object to the $2 fee(really?) please let me know.

I'm also going to have the final standings from the first 3 Savages posted on page 1 of the draft thread at some point. So keep an eye out for that.

I actually wrote something that automatically tracks the standings so you can see the most up to date whenever you want. I didn't share it with everyone because I was sick of people complaining about data. Probably 10 or so of us used it without issue last season and it was really nice. It also had a bunch of aggregated advanced stats and it usually synced within ten minutes of the games being played.

I'd gladly take the role since I can retrofit it to the new season, but I don't want to headache of listening to people complain about anything in there.

One issue is that once we are in playoffs, automated data collection gets pretty tricky at that point, so it reverts to a manual process at that time.

I retrofitted the season point scoring to the current point scoring, otherwise it makes it look like everyone sucked that season. It did not affect the podium in any way.

I'll be happy to post a running update in this thread. Robusk has clearly got a more involved setup, but odds are I'm going to post anyway.

Very happy to announce that robusk will be the official scorekeeper.

When the league fills I'll be sending out a sitemail with instructions on how to pay him.

I think it will be well worth your $2 haha. I don't know about you guys, but the first thing I'd do after looking at the game day results was head on over to the commentary thread to see where my team was in the standings. It was always such a let down last season when there were no results.
