Curt Flood Progressive
Free agency changed the face of baseball. The trade deadline has become more exciting - will your team be a buyer or seller? will you trade the star at the end of his contract or buy that star and go for the win? The offseason has become more exciting - can your team sign up a few new stars and compete for the division?
It is 1969 and Curt Flood has refused a trade and is talking about challenging the Reserve Clause in his contract. Owners, seeing the writing on the wall, have fired all of the GMs in MLB. Now is your chance to step in and build a team to win the World Series.
This league will be a 20 team progressive starting play in 1970. You will build the basis for your first squad from your team's actual 1970 roster - minus any rookies and split season players. After you select the players you want to go forward with there will be a player draft including all 1970 rookies and all other unsigned players.
All Rookies that are drafted in the league will become free agents at the end of their 5th season. Example - your team will have the rights to a rookie drafted in 1970 for the 1970 through 1974 season. That player enters the 1975 draft pool as a free agent.
Rules:
No salary cap
No DH until 1973 then DH in AL only until interleague play
AAA - yes, manual or provided; 6/2
Keepers - up to 25 man roster plus any I/R or AAA players on your team at the end of the season
Franchises will be distributed via a draft. Franchise draft order will be randomly assigned.
Trades - Yes; Draft picks can be traded for up to 3 draft cycles - example 1970, 1971 and 1972. In season trades are subject to league vote - 10 vetoes will defeat the trade. Offseason trades subject to vote if 4 owners ask for a review
Team names - pick anything you want but you need to use the ballpark associated with your franchise during the league year in play
Rookie - the first year a player appears in the WIS database will be his rookie season and he will enter the draft pool. A season of play will be dictated by the WIS database - example - a player is eligible for the draft in 1970 but has no WIS season in 1972. His five years to free agency would be 1970, 1971, 1973, 1974 and 1975.
Injured reserve - a player without a WIS season that is part of your roster may be placed on I/R
Player draft - Each draft class will include all rookie players and any unsigned veterans. Starting in 1975 draft classes will also include free agents coming off their 5 year contract.
Draft order - inaugural draft will be in order of real life team finishes for the 1970 season - worst to first. All subsequent drafts will be based upon league standings with the bottom 4 teams entering an evenly weighted draft lottery. 40 wins are required to be eligible for the lottery. Teams failing to meet that threshold will draft no higher than 5th. Tiebreakers - Head to Head, then runs scored head to head then home games won for the season.
Draft - All drafts will be 1-20 for all rounds. You may draft until you have a 25 man roster and up to 8 AAA players - 6 hitters, 2 pitchers.
Split season players - for the purposes of building your initial team you can select players that played only for your franchise. Players that played for more than one team in 1970 will be included in the draft pool.
Drop / Add - will commence after the player draft and will be first come first served
Loopholes - the commissioner reserves the right to close unintended loopholes in the rules with advance notice to the league.
Rule changes - can be proposed by any owner. A league vote will follow with 11 yes votes needed to implement the rule.
Logistics - the commissioner will track and post all free agency in the league forum. This tracking will be done well in advance so you will have adequate notice. The commissioner will track all league rosters and you should only have to cut and past your roster from year to year while making any needed changes in the process. This league will not have "too much" for you to track - it will be tracked for you and posted for everyone to see.
