What is HD’s “White Whale”? Topic

I actually tried HD around maybe 2005, and I played one year and was “double plus ungood,” as Orwell might say. But what made the game so exciting were the narratives that could be. The forums used to be littered with “dynasty reports”—little journals of progress, most with elements of role playing and often with nightmare programs.

I would like to make one, myself, and I would to attempt to achieve whatever seems to be the current most difficult thing that we can come up with. I also, frankly, have not written any good fiction in seven years and could use a creative outlet.

So, I’ve toyed with taking over a beyond miserable D1 program and making it a dynasty. It’s been done before, but maybe there’s an element that can be added to make it more fun. For instance, I could take over a really poor BYU program and only recruit kids who look Mormonic, or Mormony, depending on your suffix preference. This will require an element of the absurd: I want to entertain and be entertained by writing the report. Your suggestions are appreciated.

When was the last team to win a natty in lower divisions with triangle/zone?

Not that uncommon really. Lilspike just recently did that. First coach that came to mind.

One thing KINDA related, not really based on accomplishing anything, but more based on what's already been accomplished..... I've always wanted to find some manner of putting together a real "HD Hall of Fame". Put together, or voted on, by our peers. There's sooooo many good coaches, so the criteria would have to be made so that not every coach qualifies.

The difficulty.... different coaches value different things. What value is better when comparing titles in every world, to maybe 10 titles in one world, compared to winning with all the sets, compared to which divisions the title(s) were in, compared to title/season ratio, compared to etc. The list goes on forever. Would set criteria be ideal? As in accomplishing X gets you in. Or is the door open for a coach to play 20 seasons and win 10 titles and retire with the best averages ever, and he gets in?

All things that roll around in my brain. No clue how to do it, or if anyone would even care. But I think it would be neat for coaches to work towards a hall of fame status. And not the cheesy one that our profile shows here. One that WE vote on and approve of.

There have been random schools that have been built into D1 powerhouses, but I expect location is very important?

You can do a variation of what I'm doing. Take a team that's never so much as won a NT game (there's some in every world . . . pick the one that has the worst overall record since the beginning of HD), and bring home a national championship.

I’m not really into a coach HOF unless there are career season caps enforced at some point.

It would be nice to have a better trophy case, though. Primarily what I want is a HOF for each school. Players who break into the top 10 all time at the school in points, rebounds or assists get automatic entry; players who get National POY get automatic entry. And for every 5 seasons a user coaches a team, they can select one player from a past roster for entry.

Then it would be more complicated, but even better would be a conference HOF, and ultimately a division HOF. Those entries could be based on votes, with the nominations being roughly what they are for the teams. I would settle for the program HOF, but having a more robust trophy case for conferences and beyond would be a pretty big draw for a lot of folks, I think.

I like this idea or a variation. Every school gets a HOF coach selection per world, based on an agreed-upon point system.

And the all time team idea is cool too, for each school.

wasn't there a coach at D3 Thomas in one of the worlds that only recruited players with last name Thomas? Imagine winning a title with that team

Not sure if it’s actually rare, but I almost did it in D3 knight last season. I lost in the national championship game at Brockport.

I’ve never won with triangle, to the best of my memory
