Ah yes, just another of the three or four dynastic franchises in APPA. Of course, it is a bit of a drag to win 96 and still miss the playoffs by 5 games, but a team can only control so much. Though maybe it was fair to give someone else a turn after winning the first four division titles. However, you might also say that this could signal a downturn in the franchise's fortunes, as age is creeping into many parts of the lineup. At first base, Berkman has been an all-star, but he's starting to slip. Kotchman is an able hitter, but not something to build a lineup around. Mark Ellis mans second, but he, too, begins to age, though he continues to produce his usual .280/10/70 type seasons. Figgins is coming off a career year, but he's also moved to second base, so that leaves the hot corner vacant for now. Short holds a Rollins character that presently lives more on reputation than anything, as he's posted a couple declining seasons in a row, to the point where his OBP dipped below .300 last year. Catching is Mauer, and with the prospects in this system, such as Santana, the best result for them might be a Mauer move to third when the kids get called up, though they have no control over that. The outfield is in a bit of flux as third is. Austin Jackson has the everyday job in Detroit since the Granderson trade, and Sizemore should play everyday, given good health, but that leaves a part-time Randy Winn and unsigned Endy Chavez and Jermaine Dye to pick up the slack. Saunders may get called up again this year, but such things are difficult to count on. Pitching is also a mixed bag. Pedro and Smoltz are old hands that may well have pitched their last, though they may be loath to admit it. Marquis got rewarded for one of his best years with a contract in Washington, though he, like Shields, Pineiro, and Scherzer look to have solidified spots in their rotations. That still leaves one spot to fill. Morton may make enough starts to handle it, but it's Pittsburgh, so you never know. Parra seems to have lost his rotation spot, but he might get it back. And Zimmerman may yet pitch this year, though unlikely. One hopes the shortness of the rotation doesn't overtax a somewhat-thin bullpen. Marmol and Wagner hold down the end-game, with Gregg, Franklin, and Boyer in front of them, but that's really the end of the story. Others in the pen are in the minors or in the unemployment office. They may not like to admit it, but this team's window is closing, and while the succession plans in OF, C, and the rotation are solid, that still leaves a lot of holes to fill, and fill soon. This was their first year missing the playoffs, and with the depth of the other powers in the NL, they may be like last year's Rays - a very good team done in by a few great ones.

This is a tough team to evaluate, and yet it's very simple. They're very bad. Very, very bad. Badness of epic proportions. As bad as Megan Fox is good (looking). Etc. And when you're this bad, you really don't have reason to go any other direction besides going prospect-heavy and just loading up as many lottery tickets as you can and hope you hit on a couple. My problem arises is that nobody should ever be this bad. It just requires some token amount of effort managing your team and exercising some amount of foresight when assembling the team. I mean, it's not like you can't see it coming. For example, Crede's the only third baseman, and he doesn't appear to have a job for this season. Shortstop could be some Jason Donald if he gets the call, but Khalil Greene appears to be toast in every regard. That leaves just Roberts and Pena to man the infield, and neither of them is a team-builder, at least not any more. Hosmer and Morrison are solid prospects, and there are a bunch of middling prospects at short, but none of them fit with what's presently available to make a winner. The outfield's marginally better. Victorino is a solid present and future piece, and Bowker's underrated, but Burrell's old, and El Caballo is looking moreso by the day. The prospects behind them are nice if you like Californians, as there are a couple Angels first rounders (Trout, Grichuk) and Decker headlining, but none of them look to be significant this year or next. Catching is a logjam with a bunch of bodies in Ausmus, Blanco, Coste, and Snyder fighting for time before Posey tells them all to take a seat. Pitching is where the lottery ticket philosophy shows the most. Floyd is the staff anchor for now, with Padilla and Penny picking up what innings they can. Friedrich, Davis, Drabek, Arrieta, Kelly, and Martin are pitching prospects that are or were of much repute. Hitting on 2 of the 6 would do a lot to make this team more competitive. In the pen, Aardsma, Bell, Medlen, and O'Day appear the most locked in to jobs, with the rest as a possible slush to pick up innings. But a few relief innings are easy to pick up in the draft, if you look. In the end, it's hard for me to blame this team for going this route, but I just can't condone a 13-win season. And with the lack of sure things in the system, I worry that this sort of season will become too common. Just looking for a token effort, here, that's all.

It's time for the APPA midseason review. Most teams are just crossing the 81st-game-barrier for the season, so it's as good a time as any to gauge where people are looking strong, weak, and everything in between. I'll do a division a day starting on Monday, followed by an All-Star roundup next Sunday. Stay tuned!

  Burnett, Sean   Kottaras, George
  Perry, Ryan   Montero, Miguel
      Ross, David

Strengths: Starting Pitching - For this league, merely having enough innings to get through the season will get you far.  So while Matusz and Way-Rod have been disappointing, they'll be sufficient to get this team somewhere.

Weaknesses: Catching - Montero missing the better part of the first half has made that position weak

Unexpected: Starlin Castro - Started out as a possibility for a September call-up, became a dark horse to win the job outright in ST and is now one of the more reliable Cub hitters.

Unexpected: Dontrelle Willis - As surprising as anything on this team is the depth to which this train wreck has now fallen.

      Rowand, Aaron
      Hall, Bill
  Bautista, Jose       Cuddyer, Michael
  Johnson, Reed       Maier, Mitch

    Jeter, Derek   Hill, Aaron

  Sampson, Chris
  Badenhop, Burke
  Casilla, Santiago
      Pierzynski, A.J.
      Iannetta, Chris

Strengths: Starting Lineup - They may not all be performing at top levels together, but the starting 8 plus Davis will run out there every day and win you a few games.

Weaknesses: Starting Pitching - Moyer steady, Baker waiting for his second-half surge to kick in, and the rest are injured, returning from being cut, or just not very good.

Unexpected: Jose Bautista - Flashed power at the end of last season, but leading the majors in HR (though his OBP is sure rough) wasn't something many saw coming.

  Masset, Nick
  Farnsworth, Kyle
  Herrera, Danny
      Hill, Koyie
      Molina, Jose

Strengths: Outfield - Braun and Bay are studs, and Francoeur's alright.  Only problem is that one of 'em has to play center right now.

Weaknesses: Catching - Same as last year, just getting no help from the teams' management.  Thole should eventually qualify, so that'll help.

Unexpected: Doug Fister - On a staff manned by last year's #1 and #2 picks, along with Haren, Fister's been about the best of the lot.

Strengths: Starting Pitching - When Bonderman, Vazquez, and Rowland-Smith are all stuck in the pen, you're in good shape

Weaknesses: Catcher - Marson was a part-timer anyway, and now that Santana's arrived, he's odd man out even more.

Unexpected: Neil Walker - After Iwamura's disappearance, the former catcher has stepped in reasonably well and this team needs it.

Unexpected: Braves duo - Prado/Glaus discovering offensive prowess thought non-existent or long lost

      Snyder, Chris
      Posey, Buster

Strengths: Catching - Posey's up to stay and Snyder's one of the best backups in the league

Weaknesses: Infield - Roberts' injury has really hurt this group, with Pena as the only full-timer and he's struggling to stay above Mendoza

Unexpected: Roberts - Counted on to be an offensive cornerstone, that injury is devastating.

Strengths: Everything - pretty hard to say any one spot is stronger than the others.  The two-time defending champ is still stacked.

Weaknesses: Catching - If anything, the weakness lies behind the plate.  Martin isn't up to his standards and Avila's still struggling to set some.

Unexpected: Adam Jones - Much like the rest of the Orioles, he's taken a step back this year.
