I need some SS at-bats so this guy fits but, frankly, I'm picking him because I was actually a teammate playing American Legion ball back in the day. He had great hands, a strong arm, and range that was amazing. He got to balls that you just couldn't believe he got to, much less got there and threw the guy out. He became a good enough hitter, but he was already a MLB-caliber fielder as an 18 year-old. Technically a 2b the year I'm picking, but played SS too:

I was happy to get Randy Velarde not only because he was good but because he is from my hometown - Midland, Tx - and when he was playing we all rooted for him and he would come home during the off-season and sign autographs for us.
