As I've done for the last couple drafts, here's my thoughts on each pick:

Pick 1.4 - OF Tim Salmon
Pick 2.1 - 2B Bobby Grich

Ugh, tough draft to get last pick in. Chance and Trout are clearly the top 2 players and Erstad was a pretty clear #3. The good news is I get to pick two in a row and probably pick early in the next few rounds. I thought about Troy Percival as the top reliever and glanced at the starting pitchers but in the end settled on the two best position players. Salmon’s 1995 is a great hitting season and Grich is by far the best 2B the Angels have.

Pick 3.1 - RP Francisco Rodriguez
Almost got Percival to fall to me but K-Rod is the clear #2 reliever. With a few starters of equal quality left, I’ll go with the reliever here and then grab my ace next.

Pick 4.1 - SP Garrett Richards
Tanana and Weaver went so it was between Richards and Messersmith. Richards has fewer innings but by quality he’s the 2nd-best SP in Angels history so I went with him.

Pick 5.1 - 3B Troy Glaus
Preferred DeCinces slightly but Glaus is a monster hitter and decent fielding at a shallow position. Thought about waiting for Figgins here to be my leadoff hitter but nobody else jumped out to me at this pick.

Pick 6.1 - SP George Brunet
This one came down to Brunet vs Nolan Ryan. Brunet again had fewer innings but I wasn’t quite sure what to make of Ryan’s crazy profile (tons of Ks and BBs) so I went with Brunet.

Pick 7.1 - RP Blake Parker
The only position player I would have considered here was Jim Edmonds but he went a couple picks ahead and I already had my sights set on Albie Pearson who I envisioned as my leadoff hitter and CF. With all the good SP gone (schwarze took Ryan with the last pick of the 6th round), I’m going to need to stock up on relievers. Parker was the best one left.

Pick 8.1 - RP Ken Tatum
Figured I could wait on my position players at this point so went with another reliever in Tatum.

Pick 9.1 - 3B/OF Tony Phillips
Schwarze snipes me, Part 1. He took Pearson in Round 8, I thought I had another couple rounds before I needed to take him. Oh well, Phillips is a fine consolation prize and can actually man centerfield with his A/B+ defense.

Pick 10.1 - RP Hoyt Wilhelm
I’ve now locked in 2B, 3B, CF, and RF. I feel like I can wait on C (catcher is a mess for the Angels), 1B, SS, and my final OF spot. Hoyt Wilhelm gives me another elite bullpen arm, gonna have to do this pitching thing the hard way.

Pick 11.1 - 1B Jason Thompson
I considered Rod Carew but once I had Phillips for leadoff, I thought the best option at 1B was to build a nice platoon. There are a couple good RH options but Thompson is the only option as a lefty that works and I’m desperate for some LH hitting.

Pick 12.1 - RP Yusmeiro Petit
Kind of in no-man’s land here. Feel like I can wait on catcher (Downing, Napoli, and Averill all similar options at the top of my list), shortstop (only Burleson is taken so still have Aybar, Simmons, and Fregosi), and my 1B/OF spots. The SP pool is depleted. Petit has 91 IP with high quality and I need both the volume and the efficiency.

Pick 13.1 - C Mike Napoli
Downing goes in the 12th so I decide it’s maybe time to grab my catcher. I took Napoli’s more expensive 2009 season in case I needed the extra PA but will almost assuredly use his 2008 season with his much better hitting.

Pick 14.1 - RP Jose Arredondo
In hindsight, this should have been my shortstop but I got greedy and thought I could wait. I did like Arredondo as the best reliever left and we were in the midst of a reliever run. Of course, this came back to bite me in the ***.

Pick 15.1 - OF Justin Upton
Schwarze snipes me, Part 2. It’s always a gamble how long you can wait on a position when you’re picking last from the 4 owners. At some point, the 4th-best player gets picked as a super-backup. I thought I could wait out the shortstop position a bit longer, expecting Simmons to be the last man standing. When he went first, I was surprised as I actually had Fregosi as my top SS choice (barely) over the other 3 and so decided I would snag him. Then schwarze just gut-punched me and took Fregosi as his 2B. That really hurt. Oh well, on to Plan B. I decided on Upton as the best-hitting corner OF option who didn’t come with terrible defense.

Pick 16.1 - IF Maicer Izturis
I went back and researched my new plan at SS and I settled on Gary Disarcina. However, he has only 441 PA so I needed some support. Grich has under 600 PA so he needs some support as well. Izturis is a great-fielding, decent-hitting options and can play 3B too in case Glaus needs a rest. I’m find waiting on Disarcina--I’d be REALLY shocked if somebody grabbed him soon--but Izturis could be in play as a utility guy or 2B. Plus, worst case, if Disarcina gets taken Izturis can man SS pretty well himself.

Pick 17.1 - SP Fred Newman
Pick 18.1 - SP Rudy May

If the last 3 rounds were an example of what happens when gambling fails, this is what it looks like when it succeeds. More than happy to get Newman and May eight to ten rounds after the top group was gone. May gives me the option for a bigger-IP season or a very nice 142 IP season if I don’t need the extra innings. And he’s a lefty, which is a rare beast for the Angels.

Pick 19.1 - C Jim Leyritz
Down to deciding what order to pick my platoon partners and bench guys. Leyritz has an A+ arm and the 2nd-best bat left (after Iannetta), plus he gives me 455 PA which lets me comfortably take the shorter-PA version of Napoli. Leyritz can also play 1B if needed, so some extra flexibility there. The only downside is he’s another RH bat, but the only LH option was Tom Satriano and he’s more than a platoon-advantage worse than Leyritz (plus the fewer PA would have made it really tight with Napoli and I certainly didn’t want to have to draft a 3rd catcher).

Pick 20.1 - RP Hansel Robles
The last good reliever over 65 IP, he should allow me to also swap Rudy May for his better-quality 142 IP season.

Pick 21.1 - 1B Steve Bilko
From the beginning I had tagged Bilko or Joe Adcock as the RH half of my 1B platoon. I went back and forth on who to take. Adcock has better defense (A/D vs C/D-) and more power, but I ended up opting for Bilko’s better OBP, ability to play (crappy) outfield and mostly his extra 100 or so PA. Teixeira is great, but after him I think Thompson/Bilko is the next best thing for 1B options.

Pick 22.1 - SS Gary Disarcina
Luckily, my Plan B didn’t get swiped. Plan C was probably Dick Schofield or something. Disarcina will play the bulk of my SS innings with Izturis backing him up.

Pick 23.1 - OF Gary Pettis
Pick 24.1 - OF Reggie Jackson

I had one LH hitter on my team to this point and only two other Switch-hitters, one of whom (Izturis) is just a backup and more of a defender. I have two ways to go with Pettis--I can take one of his A+ range seasons and he can serve primarily as a defensive replacement and pinch-runner. Or I can go with his 93-PA season where he slugs 150 points higher but his defense is only B-/B (though he’ll still be a great pinch-runner).

Jackson and Otani were the best lefty bats left. Jackson gets the nod mostly because he at least has ratings in the OF whereas Otani is purely a pinch-hitter.

Pick 25.1 - P Jim Abbott
I was a tiny bit light on innings. Could probably make it work with a reliever here instead of Abbott but will play it safe. Plus, he’s a lefty. Plus plus, it’s still amazing to me that a one-handed player had such an impressive career.
6/17/2020 7:45 PM
Pick 1.2 - 2016 Mike Trout
When the randomization for round 1 was posted, I saw that I drew pick #2. I have yet to get pick #1 in any of the leagues. I figured Trout would go 1st and I would be happy to take Dean Chance. I was somewhat surprised to see Trout slip to #2. Now which season to take. His more expensive seasons were due to A+ range. His best hitting season (measured by OPS#) had fewer PA than the 2016. So I got 681 PA of .315 / .441 / .550. Only 29 HRs but I like the OBP.

Pick 2.2 - 2008 Mark Teixeira
I was very happy to land Teixeira. Give me a switch hitter with power, average and defense and I'm all-in. Easy choice.

Pick 3.3 - 2011 Jered Weaver
I have Weaver ranked 2nd among all Angels starting pitchers, but I understand why Tanana went ahead of him (53 more innings). I'll take a 1.03 whip in 236 innings. I would have considered Vlad here but he went one pick in front of me. There just aren't any position players that are must have at this point. Looking at another SP for next round.

Pick 4.4 - 1986 Mike Witt
Messersmith & Richards went before my pick. I was struggling over which SP to take... Witt or Haren. I've had success in theme leagues with Witt before, so that was the tie-breaker.

Pick 5.4 - 2011 Danny Haren
Was not expecting Haren to slide here. DeCinces & Glaus went, but I've got my eye on Figgins to play 3B.

Pick 6.4 - 1972 Nolan Ryan
Burleson was on my radar, but he went this round... and actually that worked out better, because the other shortstop choices were only marginally worse, and I got my SS much later. I also considered Mark Eichhorn as my first RP, but I hate taking RPs this early. Also, I just grabbed 1981 Nolan Ryan in the Astros draft and I couldn't resist having Ryan on both teams. The whip has always been an issue but Ryan tends to perform well in the sim... .probably due to his really low OAV. And that locks up four of the top 8 SPs. Thru 6 rounds, 4 great SPs and two of the best hitters in Angels history. I will now be picking last every round for some time.

Pick 7.4 - 2009 Chone Figgins
Love the switch hitting. Love the 729 PA. Love the .395 obp. Love the A-/B+ fielding at 3B. Love this pick. Note that Eichhorn went one pick in front of me. I also considered taking RP Ken Tatum (who went one pick after I took Figgins).

Pick 8.4 - 1963 Albie Pearon
I was all set to take Randy Velarde - the top 2B after Grich. Good obp, lots of PA, good defense. But razorclams grabbed him 2 picks in front of me. So.. plan B... same stats, different player, different position. 689 PA, .402 obp, B/A defense. Plus added bonus of sniping footballmm11. If I can get Tony Phillips as my third OF (another switch hitting high obp guy), that would be perfect.

Pick 9.4 - 1982 Fred Lynn
footballmm11 wisely takes Tony Phillips. I was really close to taking Hoyt Wilhelm, but razorclams took Garret Anderson right in front of me and I wanted a left-handed (or switch hitting) outfielder and Lynn was by far the best choice (albeit only 545 PA). I still have no RPs, but there are always going to be RPs available.

Pick 10.4 - 1968 Tom Murphy
Damn it. Wilhelm gets taken. footballmm11 has as many RPs as offensive players at this point. I panic and grab 100 innings of 0.96 whip and 0.45 hr/9. I've never used Murphy before so have no idea if this was a good pick or not.

Pick 11.4 - 2003 Brendan Donnelly
I grab another boring RP. I take the 74 inning 2003 version with a slightly higher whip and slightly lower hr/9 than the 50 inning 2002 version. I may change it to 2002. I almost took Brian Downing here. But my thought was that a catcher that much better offensively than the other catchers should have gone earlier, so maybe everybody else is scared of his arm. I can wait. Of course Downing goes 2 picks later.

Pick 12.4 - 2009 Erick Aybar
The RPs are all the same. I have my SPs. I have my outfield. I'm set at 1B & 3B. After Downing went, I can wait at catcher. Everybody but me has a 2B. That leaves SS. My two choices are Fregosi and Aybar. Fregosi has more PA and more HR pop. But Aybar is a switch hitter and is A/A. You know where this is going. Give me the switch hitter.

Pick 13.4 - 1963 Art Fowler
Another 1960's RP who is destined to underachieve. At least he has 90 innings with a 1.00 whip. RP picks are so boring. I see that Napoi went. I should start thinking about what two catcher(s) I want. There are no full time catchers.

Pick 14.4 - 1970 Jim Fregosi
Two years ago, in one of my fantasy football leagues, Le'Veon Bell was holding out for PIT. The person who took Bell with the 2nd overall pick had just drafted his 6th WR in round 13 (we start 3). And in round 14, picking one spot in front of him.... I grabbed James Conner. He won me the title, and the Bell owner went 4-9. Fast forward to today. foootballmm drafted his 6th RP in round 14. After jrig21 takes Andrelton Simmons, I decide to "stick it" to footballmm11 by grabbing Jim Fregosi. Moral of the story. Don't get greedy. On a serious note, I do need PA's at SS and his Fregosi's defense shoul dbe good enough to play out of position at 2B.

Pick 15.4 - 1961 Earl Averill
Lance Parrish just went, so I better get my first of two catchers. He's got some pop and I expect to get a A+ arm with my other catcher.

Pick 16.4 - 1994 Chili Davis
I need some extra PA's to spell Fred Lynn and also wanted a guy to be my first pinch hitter. Chili is perfect for that role.

Pick 17.4 - 1974 Ellie Rodriguez
Got my A+ arm, plus a .373 obp isn't too shabby.

Pick 18.4 - 2009 Scott Kazmir
Pick 19.3 - 1989 Bob McClure

More boring RP picks. I took McClure over Tom Morgan (who went next pick) cause I wanted another LHP. But I wish I would've taken Morgan.

Pick 20.3 - 1988 Johnny Ray
Ray is the guy I originally targeted at 2B before the Fregosi pick. I decided I'd better grab him just in case this whole playing out of position thing doesn't work out. I noticed a few picks before that Ray had a really nice short-PA season, and I sweated this pick out.

Pick 21.4 - 1973 Mickey Rivers
I don;t really want to put Chili Davis in the outfield wiht his D-/D- rating. Mickey Rivers hit .349 in 141 ABs and I can stomach D-/B- a little more.

Pick 22.3 - 2017 David Hernandez
Pick 23.3 - 2018 Taylor Cole

Two decent short-IP relievers. Boring, but I need bodies

Pick 24.3 - Ervin Santana
I could have picked another RP here, but I decided to grab the top SP on the board. Not sure if anybody needed a SP still, but Santana can start in negative HR parks and might even be a better option than Nolan Ryan against certain teams. At the very minimum, he gives me extra innings so all my short-IP relievers won't get overtaxed.

Pick 25.3 - 1984 Juan Beniquez
With a .336 AVG and C-/C- fielding, he may get some starts against LHP over Lynn.

This was a fun draft.

Great comparison to drafting a handcuff in fantasy football. The handcuff has more value to the person who has the #1 RB, but at some point he becomes worth a pick to someone else. So if he's worth a Round 10 pick to you, and you think a Round 14 pick to someone else, how long do you dare to wait?

In these drafts, your fellow owners don't really have incentive to screw you--if they hurt you, they are helping not just themselves but the other two owners also. Where I got in trouble here is that Fregosi was different from Simmons, who I expected to go last, in that he's a much better hitter. I doubt schwarze takes Simmons to play 2B over some of the other options, but I get why he would do it with Fregosi.

I also didn't have time to react as both Simmons and Fregosi went in the same round. I was considering waiting even longer and if I had done so and THEN lost Fregosi, I would REALLY be kicking myself. As is, I'm okay with the gamble I took, though obviously disappointed with the result.

As always, fun draft! Excited to see how this season and this division unfolds. Good luck to all.

I also expected going in that Trout would be the top pick but after researching it, I was pretty comfortably Chance at #1. For one, his season is really high quality and high quantity. For two, the Angels SPs kinda suck. And for three, while Trout is maybe the best player of all time and has about 8 awesome seasons, he doesn’t really have a monster one. If you like randomly got one of a players top 5 seasons, Trout would be an obvious #1. Like Schwarze said, you have to kinda choose between the A+ range, the OPS, and the PA.

Correct.... I wouldn't have taken Simmons... as he pretty much duplicates what Aybar does (and doesn't do).

What I didn't mention about that fantasy football draft. We were all sitting around a large table. The Bell owner (who's name is Doug) was at the other end of the table. Right before my pick, I wrote down the following on a scrap of paper and showed it to my brother-in-law, who was sitting next to me.

"Watch Doug's reaction on my next pick".

My brother-in-law didn't know what I was up to.... but Doug's reaction did not disappoint.
