  Gregg, Kevin
  Boyer, Blaine
      Mauer, Joe
      Santana, Carlos
      Ramirez, Max

Strengths: Catcher - Once-MVP Mauer and rising star Santana ensure security at the position for a long time.

Weaknesses: Left Side of Infield - Figgins' move to second and Rollins' injuries have left gaping holes.

Unexpected: Center Field - One's looking like a cornerstone, other's looking like the enigma; the surprise is that the former is Jackson and not Sizemore

  Ziegler, Brad   Huff, David
  Feliciano, Pedro
  Storen, Drew
  Rodriguez, Francisco
      Doumit, Ryan

Strengths: Outfield - Still this team's strength, though they don't really have a center fielder to speak of.  Oh well, forgive, mash, and forget.

Weaknesses: First Base - Tony Clark's done, Villalona might have bigger issues, and Hinske's a part-timer at best.

Unexpected: Pablo Sandoval - Looking less kung-fu and more panda by the day.

  Boggs, Mitchell
  Perez, Oliver
  Motte, Jason
      Soto, Geovany
      Mathis, Jeff

Strengths: Catching - If anything, C is the one position they won't have to worry about.  Soto's bounce-back is well-timed.

Weaknesses: Infield - Not a regular among them.  Alvarez will be, and Barmes has gotten more PT due to injuries, but there will be stamina issues here.

Unexpected: Magglio Ordonez - Not dead yet!  Then again, with a broken ankle he may as well be, but there was quality until then.

Strengths: Starting Pitching - CC and Lincecum.  'Nuff said.

Weaknesses: Catching - Clement's not a catcher anymore and Barajas isn't all that good.  Waiting on Conger's arrival to save this unit.

Unexpected: Lastings Milledge - finally appears to be settling down and may have won out his platoon situation.  Needed for this makeshift outfield.

Strengths: Corners - Chipper and Albert in the infield, Ross/Kubel/Pods in the outfield.  Only complaint is Chipper's decline.

Weaknesses: Up the Middle - CF, 2B, and C all in serious need of a booster shot.  Long-term answers not present.

Unexpected: David Price - Post-hype breakout season.  Pretty much knew it was coming, just didn't know when.

Strengths: Infield - Particularly loaded at first, but the infield starters are all solid, though Hudson's injuries are concerning.

Weaknesses: Bullpen - There are players here, and enough innings for sure.  But are any of these guys, um, good?

Unexpected: Joey Votto - NL MVP candidate unexpectedly the projected starter at first, which is saying something since the other option is Teixeira.

Strengths: Outfield - Crawford, Gutierrez, Rios probably one of the best defensive outifelds, and they can hit fairly well too.

Weaknesses: Infield - There's Beltre and backup, backup, backup...

Unexpected: Bedard - Well, not really unexpected, but his innings would really have helped.

Strengths: Third Base - After being a weakness last year, 3 full-timers man the hot corner this year.

Weakness: Catching - Eep....

Unexpected: Starting Pitching - Sheets and Peavy both done for the year at this point, so the staff will rely more than it wanted to on Masterson and the Gorz.

  Balfour, Grant
  Belisario, Ronald
      Molina, Bengie

Strengths: Shortstop - Escobar and Gonzalez were traded for each other, but on this team they provide good present and future options.

Weaknesses: Up the Middle - Aside from the aforementioned SS, C and CF are in trouble right now, and Pedroia's going to be a half-season player due to injury.

Unexpected: Nate McLouth - Was he overrated? Perhaps.  But good lord he's terrible this year.

  Papelbon, Jonathan
  Jepsen, Kevin
      Molina, Yadier

      Castro, Jason

Strengths: Second Base - Cano, Keppinger, Beckham, and Schumaker makes for a very solid batch of players.  Just wish there was a way to use them all at once.

Weaknesses: Third Base - Punto's an amazing defender, but he's somewhat injury-prone and a part-timer, and just not enough to handle the position by himself.

Unexpected: John Buck - All-Star?  Really?  Guess the guy deserves it for a career year offensively.

Strengths: Outfield -  Choo, CarGo, and Heyward are the makings of a great outfield for many years.

Weaknesses: Infield - Either old and declining or not yet established, there's not much here to get excited about yet.

Unexpected: Carlos Gonzalez - Really establishing himself as a upper-tier outfielder with his breakout.

  Romo, Sergio
      Paulino, Ronny
      Johnson, Rob
      Varitek, Jason
      Towles, J.R.

Strengths: Starting Pitching - Not as great as last year, but Johnson and Niemann are what you want at the top, and Zito and Leake should have the advantage the majority of their starts as well.

Weaknesses: Third Base -No better than last year.  Lowell's been drafted into service lately, which may allow him to platoon with Infante, but that's not the sort of combo most teams would be satisfied with.

Unexpected: Mike Leake - Tailed off some of late, but if, before the season, we had talked about potential impact rookie starting pitchers, he wouldn't have been mentioned.

Strengths: Corner Infield - As Morneau's injury stretches on, Ortiz may have to play first more than intended, but all of the 3B/1B options can hit.

Weaknesses: Outfield - Aging Abreu and Damon haven't many ABs left in them, and there aren't any other options readily available

Unexpected: Rick Porcello - For all the promise of his rookie season, he's even gone so far as to get demoted this year.  Still a bright future, but this year's surely a bump in the road.

Strengths: Center Field - Many teams would kill to have McCutchen or Kemp, and they've got both.

Weaknesses: Shortstop - Theriot?  Scrappy guy.  Gardenhire would love him.  From me, that's not really a compliment.

Unexpected: Starting Pitching - Not any one of them in particular, but as a whole, they're struggling to find some consistency.

Weaknesses: First Base - Nothing of substance to speak of.

Unexpected: Jonny Gomes - He's not dead yet!
